Cheap Cell Phone Plan
« on: July 18, 2012, 07:51:28 PM »
Greetings all,
This question is from my wife, I swear!  What by-the-minute cell phone plans do you guys recommend?    (I don't own a cell phone and I have never sent a text message.)  Thanks in advance for any info provided.

Recommendations vary based on usage requirements, potential pre-existing hardware, and provider coverage maps... but there you go, cell phone plans and much much more. :)

I think you have the wrong cartoon avatar.

I'm happy with my Virgin Mobile plan.  $20 month for 400 minutes.  (For another $5 you can get a certain number of texts.  Not sure of how many 'cause I don't text either.)  Uses Verizon netword I think.  Of course you have to buy your own phone.  I think mine for $40.

I'm currently using a very reasonable tmobile plan.  $30/mo for unlimited data, texts and 100min / mo. You can purchase additional refill cards in 1000 min increments for $100. (smaller increment refill cards expire in a month or so whereas the 1kmin card expires after 1yr). This is great for folks like me that find ubiquitous internet very important but don't talk on the phone much. You could probably even setup some sort of skype service on your phone to piggyback on the data plan and not use the minutes at all.

I use Cricket for cheap cell phone plans and broadband internet.  Cell phone plan is unlimited talk and text.  First phone on the plan is 35.00 and the second is 30.00.  I use their broadband internet as my sole internet source and it runs 45.00 per month.

I have a similar deal to Manchops:

Virgin Mobile
$27/month prepaid is 300 voice anytime minutes, unlimited data, unlimited TXT and MMS

It's on the sprint network and coverage is fine in CO, NJ, NY, CA in my experience. The data is not fast by any means, but it works well enough to stream music continually while in the car, do GPS/maps navigation, check email, twitter, and the occasional clutch web page in a pinch.

I bought a cheap LG Optimus Android phone that I will use at least 2 years which amortizes to somewhere around $6-$9 per month (I forget exactly how much it cost).

I do any long calls on my computer over google chat, but for the most part I barely use voice calls.

I'm not sure that the people posting in thi thread have noticed it, but the first word in I.P. Daley's first post (the first response) in this thread is a link.  A link everyone should follow:

Republic Wireless (http://republicwireless.com/) offers unlimited everything (I know thats not exactly what you're looking for) for $19/month. They expect you to have wifi at home and send all of your calls from home over the internet instead of the cell network.

I've been using them for about a month and no complaints.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
