BulkFoods.com - just what it sounds like
« on: November 09, 2014, 11:51:21 PM »
I just placed my second order with www.bulkfoods.com and thought I would share here to see what others think. I found it first when I was looking for somewhere to buy the large quantities of nuts we were using when we got a high-powered blender. While there I picked up a few other things that looked like good deals. Overall I'm super pleased with the quality, though the selection of organic is not as great as I'd like it exists where it matters.

I have the same problem as I do at Costco - it's such a good deal when in bulk that I bought a couple things in quantities far exceeding what I actually use and now have a lifetime supply (looking at you powdered spirulina). This time I was more cautious.

So what do you think? Good deals on things you use lots of (nuts, seeds, grains) or pricier than somewhere you shop nearby? I live in a fancy area for work and there's a dearth of good ethnic grocery stores (or affordable groceries in general). Do any of the big name stores beat these prices?

I didn't look extensively but the few things I did look at were crazy expensive!

Edit: spent some more time on the site. Can't find anything that's cheaper than Sam's, by a wide margin, too.

That's exactly the info I'm looking for - are you talking about Sam's Club? Also, the savings I can find are only in the 5lb+ range, so if you're looking at the basic small quantities it doesn't seem to be better.

There aren't any Sam's Clubs anywhere close to me. Would love to hear where other people get their bulk grains, nuts, etc.

Looked through the peanuts, almonds, and mixed nuts (deluxe) and can find prices cheaper around my local area.

Examples:

-Blanched roasted peanuts $2 per lb at Sprouts a few weeks ago. Sprouts is sort of like Trader Joes.

-2 lbs deluxe raw nut mix at Target for $12.35 (with 5% off card). Now with the 5% off card its worth it, even better if you get them on special.

Generally I scan the local ads for whatever is on special and load up. Nuts are hard to come by cheap, I imagine living in an urban Southern California area makes it easier for me to pick and choose stores. Perhaps in more rural areas this site might be good.

Where do you live? I would LOVE to use Azure Standard {https://www.azurestandard.com/} Their prices are really incredible (especially for organic). I hope they come to PA one day :)

If you live in the Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virgina region, you can use Frankferd Farms {www.frankferd.com}. They are hit and miss on prices. Some things I can get cheaper elsewhere. Some things, like Dr. Bronner's soap, they beat Amazon by $6 per 32oz bottle. Then some things, like their dried organic black beans beat Walmart's non-organic beans by $0.45 a pound.

I order my almonds from California-almond.com they are $6.85 and I buy them here because they steam pasteurize their almonds rather than spray them (ahem, blue diamond). Aldi just stocked roasted & salted macadamia nuts (mostly halves and pieces) for $0.78 an ounce cheaper than Amazon subscribe & save  with 15% off (which is cheaper than Walmart). I buy organic walnuts from Fillmore farms http://www.fillmorefarms.com/store/. Although, I ordered at the end of the summer before the new crop came in (they are cheaper then).

Disclaimer: I live 2 hours from the nearest Costco &/or Sam's club or ethnic store. 16 miles from the nearest grocery store. The only real places I compare prices to are Walmart, Aldi, Amazon subscribe & save, and Vitacost.

I am pro Azure Standard (disclaimer: I deliver for them). They aren't the cheapest for everything, but they are every bit as earnest and well meaning in real life as the website makes it seem. The CEO's honest-to-God dream is to connect farmers and eaters so that everyone has access to affordable organic non-GMO food.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
