Broadcast TV Antenna
« on: December 26, 2014, 08:01:31 AM »
Hi Mustachians,

I've just hit the 6 month mark after cutting out cable and couldn't be happier. A joint Netflix account and a hand-me-down apple tv have brought my monthly "cable" expenses down from $70 to under $5!

However, there has been a couple times when it would have been nice to have local broadcast networks such as PBS.  I've looked at a few on line and the sub $20 price seems very reasonable but the reviews seem mixed.  Does anyone have any recommendations for a broadcast TV Antenna? Any good experiences? Bad experiences?

Thanks for the help!

Happy New Year!

I was going to go with a cheaper antenna at Best Buy, but the salesman highly recommended the RCA Amplified Indoor Antenna 1251F ($26). My 13 year old hooked it up, and I love it. The biggest surprise to me is that I get at least 10 more channels than the regular ones I expected...Cozi, Bounce, a Movie channel. I think I've found more to watch since I got rid of cable.

The right antenna depends heavily on your location relative to the broadcast towers. The best way to figure out what you need is to visit antennaweb.org

This. YMMV. I tried everything from a cheap Walmart antenna to a full blown giant directional 'grandpa's' antenna mounted on the roof. Nothing got all the channels as the towers are all around me. I need an omni-directional antenna but a few towers are too far away for even a good one. I eventually settled on getting the free QAM channels from my cable company.

Thanks all!

antennaweb.org included the 1251F in the category that worked for my area.  Picked that one up at Best Buy over the weekend and it works great.  Thanks for all the help.
