Boxed Wine, Anyone?
« on: January 24, 2017, 07:09:14 AM »
Anybody else out there who is classy enough to drink boxed wine? Besides being way less expensive on a volume basis, boxed wine lasts much longer so you only can drink one glass without the rest going bad quickly. So you use less=spend less.
Any recommendations on brands/styles from other boxed-winos?

The Bota Boxes are very good.  Boxed wine has lost its stigma--I've been to parties where the boxes are in the open.

+1. For at least a year, we'd have two Bota Boxes on top of the fridge -- one white and one red. They were mostly pretty decent quality for the price, though nothing to write home about. They have several varietals of red and of white.

Yup.  We've been drinking boxed wine for years.  In fact, I've finally come to the realization that we are so "under budget" for long term FIRE that I am "requiring myself" to buy one actual real glass bottle of wine when we go to the grocery store.  And I'm talking the "good stuff" -- you know like a $9 bottle!

Black Box seems good.  BUT... we've had quite a number of them that had gone bad.   And I mean: really bad.  The white wines were a nasty, stinky dark brown in color.  Thee reds ... well they just were terrible tasting.  We've wildly hypothesized that it is a storage issue -- either on a delivery truck in Texas summer heat or possibly damaged by light where someone punches open that big top handle area.  The first time or two we just sighed and tossed them out.  But it's happened enough times that we now take them back for refund/exchange.

We also drink some of the Almaden boxed reds.  They're not as good to me as the Black Box, but they are more consistent and much cheaper.  (The box is bigger.)

I love the boxed wines.  Bota was my "go to" wine, but the local Trader Joe's just started
stocking their in-house brands at $11 for a 3 liter box.

Nice, 3 buck chuck is now 11 buck boxed chuck!

Will look for this next time, hope they have the Shiraz in a box.

We like Bota box. The cabernet sauvignon was way too thin for my tastes, and the 'redvolution' a bit too sweet- I found the old vine zinfandel to be the best red, which is interesting since I usually much prefer cab to zin.

I read some comedy bit somewhere that went something like "boxed wine is for people who want to say that they drink so little wine that they couldn't possibly finish a bottle, but in fact drink so much wine that they need it on tap." Hit the nail on the head for me :) Boxed wine does not result in me drinking less (although it's so much cheaper I really do probably spend less total).

I had a project once, to add climate control to a portion of an Arizona grocery / liquor warehouse, specifically for wine.  Why?  Some of the stores were complaining that the corks were popped when they received them at the store.

First step was removing the wine pallets from the upper racks in the summer...  then after 4 months of project planning and estimates, we found out that the grocery warehouse was receiving them from the distributor with the corks popped.  so no way were we going to spend $500k to climate control product that was already damaged by the wine distributor!

My thought is that those spoiled boxes have been left in the heat too long, or have been in warehouse for more than their shelf life, which is less than a glass bottle, and retailers don't realize.  Buy from a high volume location, instead, if you can.

To the OP, may I draw your attention to the name of one of Australia's leading chain bottleshops:

https://www.danmurphys.com.au/dm/home.jsp;jsessionid=E17713D0911D5DD13B85C0EF31048145.ncdlmorasp1306?bmUID=lCUrjiG

Boxed wine, or Cask Wine as it's known in Australia (where the concept was invented) still has a significant stigma in Australia.  Which I believe is just as undeserved as the prestige granted to the storage of wine in a bottle.

It's also more colloquially known as 'goon' and the silver bladder which stores the wine is known as a 'goon bag'. Charming.

But I suspect the stigma lies in the tendency of wine manufacturers to sell large volume boxes (4 litres) of sweeter less sophisticated wines.

We do buy from high volume locations.  But keep in mind that summers in Texas can have 30-80 days in a row of 100+ degree heat.  If the truck and/or warehouse is leaving them out in the heat, there isn't much you can do.  Add to that some extra special Texas liquor law stupidity:  The first distributor to get set up for alcohol delivery in a county becomes the de facto government mandated monopoly distributor for the entire county.  (It doesn't matter if they suck.  It doesn't matter if they're in a far corner of the county and can't physically service the whole county.)  So... if the problem is in the distribution, then you have that problem for the entire county.

What I never have been able to hypothesize is why it seemed to affect Black Box wines only.  I can only guess it is the middle man distributor above the county distributor that is at fault.

I've been happy for the most part with Black Box.   My mother-in-law recommended it.  She works for a wine distributor and said it's a nice intersection of decent and inexpensive.  That's always what I buy for parties.  Nobody cares that it's boxed - they just care that there's plenty of it!  Much of our wine is free, which is even better.  My mother-in-law always ends up with extra bottles, and she brings a couple every time she comes over.

Pepperwood Grove is one of my favorite, cheap Pinot Noirs. I noticed that they have it in a box now. I assume it is the same as the bottled version, but have not tried it yet.

I recently jumped on the boxed wine wagon, after thinking of ways to low my booze cost per serving in 2017.  I read an article from the FrugalWoods, and they recommended the Bota Box and Big House brands.
I went searching for them at my local discount store, Total Wine.  I ended up choosing Bota Box Redvolution because it was $13.59 for a 3 Liter box, which was about a dollar cheaper than the Big House box.  We really like the Redvolution. It has a good balance, not too sweet, just right.
I'm looking forward to perhaps trying the Cab next.

Price Comparison:
.84/ serving for $13.59 Bota Box 3L (which gives you about 16  6 oz. glasses)
$1.50 / serving for $6 wine bottle (which gives you 4  6 oz. glasses)

Definitely cheaper in the long run.

I took pictures of a couple other brands that I may try, including Double Dog Dare (which was $11.99 for 3L) and Banrock Station ($11.49 for 3L).  They also had Fisheye 3L boxes for $13.29.
Has anyone tried these brands?

I'm currently working my way up the price spectrum of box wines. I stick with either a merlot or cab. I've had pacific creek which is bad, almost a water flavor and a gummy feeling in my mouth. I've had double dog dare cab, which I was surprised by. It is not super dry (my preference) but certainly not sweet. Very mild oak and a bit of pepper. I would call it unoffensive. Solid if you want to drink a wine, just to drink, not to savor. I will probably buy it for parties where the quality of wine isn't important. I've had fish eye in a bottle and would rate double dog dare above it easy.

What a fantastic name for a bottle shop! I spent a few months in 'Oz' after college. All the backpackers at the hostels drank 'goon'. They said the best part was that when they were finished, they could blow up the bag and use it as a pillow to pass out on...

Spork: if you ever get a white wine like you describe, it's rarely that it was cooked or stored improperly. It was old.

Frozen wines often develop tartrate crystals (look like little cornflakes). Those will have ruined and/or weak flavor.
Cooked wine may be off color, the cap may be popped, and the flavor will be off, but it won't be as you described.
Vinegar smell, esp. in reds, and dark brown whites are indicative of very old or open (oxidized) wine. No boxed wine is meant to last longer than 2 yrs in package - the wine you got was probably on the shelf a very long time. Plastic is not a great container for something that's oxygen sensitive, but retailers very, very rarely are on top of rotating these.

The top three are Bota, Black Box, and Our Daily Red, if you can find it. It happens to also be organic.

I wish my wife would find a box type wine she likes.
They are much more practical, fit the fridge better, less trash, box equals a couple bottles, etc.
We always have wine bottles laying down in the fridge, and on more than one occasion they've rolled out and broken.

I'm currently drinking a cab from Pour Haus; I got it for 14.99. It has almost no oak flavor. Not a whole lot of depth in the profile, and the traditional cab flavor is fairly bold and is very much at the front. A bit sweet for a cab (note, this is still dry) giving it an almost juicy quality but I like the flavor. I like it more than double dog dare, but this in not inoffensive. Worth a try if you like cabs, but not one I'd bring to a party since I think you'd need to actually like cabs but not be a snob to like this. I probably would not use this is cooking, since I like a bit more oak in those.
This is my 3rd box wine that I have tried (working may way up the price ladder) and until now I'd been going through one every month. This one is lasting me longer because I was on narcotics and couldn't drink for 3 weeks, and am now splitting my time between my house where there is boxed wine, and my parents where there is not. So I may have information on the shelf life of an open box. Its been open for 6 weeks and is still good.

There's a couple options to solve the bottle issue, if she won't switch. You can roll a kitchen towel so it hold the bottle in the middle, like so: https://annebronkema.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/p1020997.jpg or you can purchase little kick stands: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/38/bc/20/38bc20cb16faf814b23fc6c8ff4cb656.jpg or you can DIY a solution if you have a wire shelf: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/80/09/c0/8009c0d0b674961f2b9cfc5be87f9a50.jpg

But yes, boxes *are* easier! Or just drink reds ;)

Wine Spectator routinely lists more than a dozen box wines with scores over 85.  All are delightful and last 4-6 weeks in the box.

So in the past two months I've had Black Box and Vin Vault. Both cabs. Black Box was 14.99 and Vin Vault was 15.99.
Black box had a fairly bold flavor with the traditional unoaked cab taste...but I thought it was off, can't explain why. Probably some mouth feel thing. My less picky spouse liked it. I would rate it above pacific creek (the cheapest boxed wine I've gotten) but below every other one I've tried.
Vin Vault: I like this one. The best one I've tried so far. Fairly juicy for a cab, with a slight buttery taste. Generally mellow flavor. I've had it with and without food and while it is decent, pairing it with dinner improves neither.

my girlfriend and I always end up drinking way more wine when we go with the bags...
with the bottle we each have 2 glasses and then have to stop and asses if we want enough more to warrant opening another bottle.

with the bags, it's too easy to say, one more glass... and after 3, sometimes the inhibitions are too far gone to say no to a 4th...

for parties/multiple drinkers though, bags are the way to go.

I recently went to a BAR that had boxed wine.
A friend of mine catered his own wedding and they used boxed wine. I use to get clowned for being a boxed wine cheerleader but slowly and surely more and more people I know are taking advantage of the cost savings there.
I drink $15 Franzia mostly

Are bag's what Aussies call box wine?

This is what boxed wine looks like in the US

But there IS a bag inside the box, so maybe that's what they mean?

I love the packaging innovation of boxed wine. We don't drink very much wine so opening a bottle often means that part of it goes to waste since we can't finish it in time. With boxed wine it will stay fresh in the fridge for up to a month.

Personally I like some of the Target boxed wines. They aren't top-of-the-line, but they are very drinkable, everyday wines that are perfectly adequate. I also think the packaging is attractive and they make some little insulating carrying cases for the boxes which is nice for a picnic. My sister, who works at an upscale winery, is fine with drinking Target boxed wine. Her opinion is that you should drink what you like, price and snootiness factor be damned.

Fell off chair laughing.  Our house is <ahem> different in regards to opened bottles.  ;)

I like Bota's red Zin, but the Whole Foods bottled Three Wishes Cabernet is now my go-to. At $3/bottle it's a similar price, it's IMO super-delicious (better than the best boxed I've ever had) and for me the "on tap" aspect of boxed was too much of a temptation. YMMV!

By far, the best box wine I've ever had was Juan Gil's Shania Monsatrel. We used to get it when we lived in Colorado, and now can no longer find it here in Missouri!  So sad....   It put all other boxes that I've tried to shame.

not sure what Aussies call it... when camping/hiking/floating we usually take the bag out of the box to save space/weight, me and most of my friends use bag/box wine interchangeably. We're in Texas.
