Title: Book for new mustachian?
Post by: FastStache on January 31, 2014, 05:18:51 PM
I'm trying to help someone understand the mustachian state of mind? Their time is limited, so I'm hoping for just one book to give them to read that easy to digest and some nice graphs, etc.

Not sure if it is necessarily Mustachian, but it has put me in a good place overall, was Peter Lynch, "Beating the Street".  It made so much sense to me and launched a very profitable love affair with becoming FI.  And, how I tie it together with being Mustachian is, now that I'm rich, I'll do better about those root causes that I have drifted away from in my 20's and 30's...  Just like Gates probably didn't necessarily plan to wipe out age-old diseases like polio and malaria when he was dominating the user interface and software wars, I had to lose my focus on what I cared about to survive, but I'm back on the top of the pyramid and want to use the rest of my life to do good.

Haven't read as many FI books as others, but I second lentilman's suggestions, although the book gets a little repetitive at times.  I have heard that Your Money or Your Life is a good one too.  I wouldn't suggest reading ERE's book right out the gate but it could be a good follow-up.

The Complete Tightwad Gazette, by Amy Dacyczyn.  She came long before MMM but she very practically demonstrates many Mustachian principles, such as constant optimization, avoiding lifestyle inflation, and creative DIY .

Both Your Money or Your Life and Millionaire Next Door are great. I would choose YMOYL over MND if you only have one book to make your point. Both books are a little dated, but it stuck out to me much more in MND. Also, YMOYL gives a progression of action steps that you can immediately begin to take. MND profiles the habits of millionaires, and while the premise is interesting, I found the most of the book to simply restate this information in new ways. I came out of YMOYL with a very specific view of what I could do in my life to move toward Mustachianism.

Both books are easy to read and understand.
