How to Retire Early vs The Simple Path to Wealth
« on: July 18, 2018, 01:06:07 PM »
Who has read both How to Retire Early (Robert and Robin Charlton) and The Simple Path to Wealth (J.L. Collins)? I’d like to read one of them, and unfortunately I can’t find either one at either of the 2 library systems I have access to…so I guess I’m going to have to pony up some big bucks to buy one or the other.

I’ve read a few Amazon reviews, but they’re very close in Amazon rating, and I’m very indecisive. Thoughts from those who’ve read (preferably both of) them?

Will I get any more from reading them than from reading the MMM top 10?

I haven't specifically read either of those books, but I've read countless other personal finance books and blogs and none of them have some secret success formula.  If you need more personal finance knowledge keep reading MMM posts and the forums and you can also look at Early Retirement Extreme blog.  I find that everything else is just regurgitating their philosophies.

I've read Collins' book AND his blog. They are largely the same material. The blog has the advantage of being free. The book has the advantage of being a little better edited and assembled. If you're worried about spending money on the book, just read the blog.

Also, his material is excellent. I'm a big fan.

Hah, I was largely being facetious about it being a problem to pay the $11 or $14 for the book. I think it could be money well spent it in the end. But then again, if I can get the same info elsewhere for free...why pay for it, right?

I was one of the first to read Jim Collins' book, The Simple Path to Wealth, and a huge fan of his blog series. You can get his book for free on Kindle or Audible (enroll in trial). I credit his series as one of the main education sources for me going from zero knowledge/scared to death to now 100% confident in my investments and advice to others.

The blog series is here: http://jlcollinsnh.com/stock-series/

Agree with solon; as long as you don't mind a bit of overlap in the different chapters and a bit of older information that has since been updated in the book, the blog series is fantastic and free. I have bought the book as a present for a few friends tho and consider it a great bargain, so if you enjoy his blog series and get something out of it, you might consider buying a copy of the book to support him and pass the knowledge on to friends or family if they're open to the idea. That would be the "why pay for it" part - because you got great value out of his labor. ;)

And I've also requested my library to purchase his book too (you can do that!). They may not, but if the buyers take a shine to the idea, it might be available that way for you and others.

I just got Collins book on kindle unlimited for free.  KU has a 3 months for 99  cents special going.  I love his blog so I think I will like his book as well.

Will your library do an interlibrary loan, I have had good luck getting an obscure technical handbook thru interlibrary loan.
It was in a format that made for easy copying of all 40 pages, now I have my own copy.
It wasn't price, the handbook was not available for sale,
But it could have been price! :-)
