Best Lounge Chair?

Obviously the best lounge chair is the Herman Miller Eames lounge chair. I've been having pretty severe lower back problems and I think it's because of the cheap POS couches I got from Value City Furniture a couple years back. I picked up a used HM Embody chair off CL for 400$ using HSA funds a couple years back for my office and it's been an amazing ROI(if R is wellbeing).

However, at home, still using the shitty couch. I'm looking at getting a nice HM Eames Lounge chair because the brand totally saved me before at work, so I don't see why it would not at home. However, the Eames starting price is 6,400$ and the two I found used on CL are 2500-3500$. There are many imitators out there but from the articles I've read comparing the two, the imitator quality is so lackluster that it's not worth it.

So I'm here for stories, recommendations, etc, on cheap alternatives to a good lounge chair for sitting at home watching TV, freelancing, websurfing, etc. Brands you like, reasons you like them, and if you have personally had a good experiences with an Eames replica.

This is what I did:

1. Sit in the nice chair long enough to know - as in, really know, well, all over - how it felt (other than 'comfortable').

2. Hit up the ReStore, etc, until I found a chair that felt the same when I sat on it.

3. ???

4. Profit - well, only small loss (my awesome lounge chair was $10!!)

I don't have back problems (crossing my fingers--don't want to jinx myself by saying that)...but I find that with most lounge chairs and sofas, I am a lot more comfortable if I stick some kind of lumbar support up against my lower back,. On my living room couch, I just put one of the decorative pillows behind my back. On the den sofa, I put one of the end bolster pillows behind my back. When we had a big recliner, I put one of the couch pillows behind my back. So it isn't like you have to buy some fancy, medical, orthopedic device or special chair. YMMV.

Have you tried doing a little myofascial release for your back? A chiropractor got me into it and it definitely works well for me.

You place a pvc pipe inside of a pool noodle cut to about 2 ft long.
Lay down on top of it with the noodle just underneath your shoulder blades and your arms stretched out.
Take 6 deep breaths (in and out) and let them out, allowing your back muscles to relax and sink into the noodle.
After the 6 breaths, roll the pool noodle down an inch or two and repeat. Do this about 5 times all the way down your back. Should only take 5-10 minutes.
Try and move your outstretched arms as close to overhead as you can while remaining on the floor. This will increase flexibility in your shoulders.

Do this once in the morning, once before bed, and before and after you exercise.
It has done wonders for me when my sciatica starts to twinge a little.


Sorry this has nothing to do with a chair, just wanted to offer some possible help if you haven't tried it already.
For the first week or so you may want to leave the pvc pipe out and just use the noodle just to get used to it.

If I could afford it, I would absolutely get a Ekornes Stressless chair. The most comfortable lounge chair EVER. I think they are around $2000 ... which is cheaper than Herman Miller ... lol. Sometimes you can find used ones cheap or knockoffs, which won't be as comfortable but are still decent.

Do you have a room & board store near you?

Still pricey, but you'll be able to sit in some high  quality lounge chairs.

I bought an old Ekornes recliner  on Amazon with ottoman in 2009....I think I paid about $100 for it. The leather appears fairly worn but I agree that it is still phenomenally comfortable. I second the recommendation.

I would also highly recommend Craigslist as a source for furniture purchases. Furniture plummets in value when it leaves the showroom, many people need to sell quickly when they move, and, unlike other items such as cars or major appliances, the condition is easy to evaluate...you know what you are getting. You just have to be a bit patient.

I "third" the recommendation for an Ekornes Stressless chair and ottoman.  I've had one for about 5 years now and use it daily.  It's the most comfortable chair I've ever had.  There are different styles to choose from and also 2 or 3 sizes within each style. so a fair degree of customization is possible. With the tiltable ottoman and adjustable headrest, you'll never want to get out of it.  Consider yourself lucky if you can buy one for only 2K.  I paid over 3K Cdn and that was for a floor model.  Ordered new would have been over 4K.  Still worth it though, as I will have it for life.

Another Ekornes fan here. I bought one back in 2001, and it's been my favorite chair ever since. I can sit and read in that chair for hours at a time.

A few years ago, I found two for sale on Craigslist - $375 for the pair. They're now the reading chairs in my den, and they make a good spot for a nap, too :)

Yeah, we bought one of the stressless chairs a decade (or more) ago, when my husband was having major back problems and couldn't sit comfortably in anything. (We also bought a pricey temperpedic mattress at that time.) The mattress has been a total win. The chair ... there are times when he uses it because it's far more comfortable then anything else, but honestly, installing a pull-up bar on the back deck and having him use it at least 4 times/week (partly for hanging, partly for pull-ups) has been the biggest game changer. Now we have a sunk investment in the chair, and it's kind of big and clunky for our house. We move it around from time to time, but there's no room where it really fits nicely.

However, when my FIL was visiting and couldn't sleep comfortably anywhere (back troubles also), he slept in it for several nights and liked it so much he went back home and bought himself one.

Grab an Ikea Poang chair to tide you over. I don't dig the ottoman, but the chair itself is decently comfortable for a fixed position.

This is something I've been thinking about lately too. My ideal chair would be a recliner of some sort with a small form factor, collapsible arms and wheels like this https://thehomedweller.com/sleeper-chairs/. Think a scaled-down zero-gravity chair merged with a task chair. I don't have room in here for another chair, so if I had something like that, I could roll it up to the desk for working or roll it away from the desk and kick back to read. It would be like two chairs in one.

When we rearrange the living room (again) I'll have room for a regular recliner, which I would love, but my roommate watches TV in there and I prefer to be alone when I read. (Actually, I prefer to be alone 90% of the time regardless of what I'm doing, but that's a separate issue.)

I do about 3 hours of napping and probably another 3 hours of being awake in my chair a day and cant afford or chose not to spend that kinda money so I just go to the store and really sit in one for quite awhile because I just think that's the best way. Another thing Is I like a kick out or handle and soft arms but not to bulky. Another thing that i do is use like an airplane pillow and that really makes kicking back comfortable and supports the neck the best.
