best dress pants for bike commutes and life?
« on: March 23, 2019, 08:16:57 AM »
Anyone have a go to pair of modern fit business casual pants for short bike commutes to work? My commute is short and there is no point in changing clothes but I wear all my pants out quickly. Most of what I see is frumpy, fadable cotton. Looking for something that is durable, flexy, slim taper for biking and modern fitting.

I'm a lady but I've been biking a lot in my Prana Briann hiking pants for the last year or so. They've been durable and they have 3M Scotchgard built in, so they don't pick up stains from chain grease. I also often look with envy at the men's Levi's commuter jeans, which are specifically designed for biking, but they don't come in a women's fit anymore.

I'm not a cyclist, but I know they sell gaiters for cycling.  I think you could also use hiking gaitors.

Costco brand travel pants should be showing up in stores soon!

YES, this. Costco travel pants are the best. I don't know that they entirely meet your criteria--to me they are a bit on the casual side--but they are surprisingly stylish and so inexpensive. Look much better on, in my opinion.

A few other places I like (I'm a woman, but my boyfriend has also purchased men's pants from these places):

Western Rise: https://westernrise.com/
Ministry of Supply: https://ministryofsupply.com/
Outlier (they now only make men's clothing): https://outlier.nyc/

I have been wearing Eddie Bauer First Ascent hiking pants.  There are several styles and lots of fits.  I wear a straight leg and use velcro leg straps or gaiters (esp. for wet).  Working great.  Look good. I don't like the small logo on the thigh.

I'm a big fan of Gap's "athletic fit" khakis (referred to by other stores as chinos), though that's largely because it's a good fit for my body type. They're not tight, but a slimmer fit for "athletic" guys who have big thighs. I don't bike to work, I just think the slimmer "athletic fit" looks much better than regular ("straight" fit). Athletic fit is only available online though and for what it's worth I wear 30x32 in straight fit and 31x30 in athletic fit. Can be had for ~$30 on the right sale.

I second the Eddie Bauer First Ascent pants, although I agree that the logo tips them off to not be dress pants.  The material is flexible, breathable, has a bit of water resistance if you hit a small puddle, and seems to hold up well to my short bike commute.  I have the insulated guide pants for my winter commutes as well and they are incredibly warm.

Wear bike shorts and change into dress pants when you get to the office.

Benefits:
- You will be more comfy on the bike
- You will never worry about getting grease/dirt on your pants
- You will never worry about getting your pants caught in the chain
- You will never worry about having sweaty pants
- You can cycle in pouring rain and it doesn't matter
- If you fall, you don't ruin your pants
- Your pants won't get weird wear patterns in the crotch and ass area
- Your dress pants will keep a crease better/be less wrinkly when you get to work

Hey, who asked you, Mr Obvious.

LoL.   I don't wear shorts because I don't use the bike for commuting, but just for errands, and I don't like shopping / being seen out in bike shorts or tights.  OTOH, when I bike commuted I defintely did the "get changed at work".   Makes the unexpected puddle much more of a non-issue.

Prana or Swerve.  Not cheap, but cheaper than parking.

Gap's newer chinos with stretch aren't bad either.
