Metromile
« on: March 29, 2017, 12:58:23 PM »
Has anyone here filed a claim with Metromile?

I really want to lower my insurance costs and I've done the math for the pay per mile deal and it's WAAY better than my current insurance (Esurance). My only concern is if they actually follow through on their promises to pay for damages. Reviews online are sparse and I can't get a handle on how easy (or difficult!) they are to work with. Thanks!

following.  I have Metromile but have never filed a claim.  Everything I have done with them has been easy - no issues in the almost year I have been with them.  They have taken my monthly payments very reliably :-)

I've never had to file a claim either, but I love Metromile. It saved me ~$50/mo over what I was paying for "regular" insurance.

They recently have changed their claims processing experience, so reviews might be mixed for that reason. I was switched to it when I was up for renewal at the end of last year. Here's an excerpt from the email that was sent:

In case you missed the big news, Metromile is now offering a significantly improved claims experience! The last day of your policy term is approaching, which means that you can soon take advantage of this.

What can you expect from the new claims experience? Since Metromile is overseeing the entire process, you will have a dedicated claims professional who ensures your claim gets handled quickly and fairly. We will also be introducing new updates and features that will continuously improve the experience.

Auto insurance is a highly regulated market. Either you have a valid claim, as per your contract with them, or you do not.

Companies can't decide to not pay your claim because they feel like it.

That's a good point Nola584. The new process is so new that a lot of reviews are moot now. I'm most concerned about the amount of time a claim takes. I've seen some pretty bad reviews about processing time (one took 6 months?). I'm hoping that the new process/app will work faster.

And as for it being a very regulated industry, I should point out that they are regulated largely by the court system. Which is fine if you have a lawyer on retainer, but I certainly don't have that. There is always some discretion with these cases too. Are several inches of water in your trunk covered or is it wear and tear because the rubber lining wore out? Some companies work well right out of the gate and others need 'help' remembering their legal requirements.

I found this reddit thread:https://www.reddit.com/r/bayarea/comments/620730/why_you_should_avoid_metromilefor_now/

It has some good info from people filing claims. Seems a little mixed, but a recent comment (last March) shows that they are still slow, but doesn't specify if they are on the new system or old. My general take is that you have to be an active participant in the claims process for it to work smoothly.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
