Bad Apple - laptop
« on: May 25, 2019, 08:06:08 AM »
My old iPad is obsolete and since l am tired of the frequently non-functional, over- designed needlessly complicated crApple products ( not to mention the pretentious, arrogant, possibly ageist corporate/employee culture, etc.), l am going to switch back to other products.

Can anyone recommend a good Mustachian laptap and operating system (OS). I am not a techy and use the internet only for emails, research ( Wikipaedia, etc.), reading newspapers, occasional Skype,
and a few apps like Google earth, maps, translation, anatomy atlas, chess, etc....and a music keyboard would be fun. Thanks.

When I switched away from my mac, I bought a slightly older version of this computer with Best Buy's "new but unboxed" discount for about $50 off: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-yoga-730-2-in-1-13-3-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-256gb-solid-state-drive-platinum/6201041.p?skuId=6201041

Honestly, even this is probably more than you need - I wanted enough computing and graphical power to run some very basic 3D modeling programs. A decent size keyboard was also a high priority for me, because I have an old typing injury. I also prioritized an aluminum rather than plastic shell, because it makes the computer FAR more sturdy. (An SSD was a priority for a similar reason, but those are nearly ubiquitous now.)

You may be able to get by with an even cheaper option like a chromebook. I started my research with this quiz: https://www.laptopmag.com/laptop-finder

Finally, are you 100% sure you want a laptop? Desktops are often cheaper, and sequestering your internet use to a specific space rather than letting it leak into your entire life can be really beneficial. Speaking from a place of hypocrisy, here.

I think you'd be happy with a Chromebook.

Prices are all over the place, but figure out what you need and buy the cheapest one that works for you. I think we paid $159 a couple of years ago for an Acer model, and my daughter uses it all the time.
