Amla for frizzy hair
« on: July 27, 2016, 08:55:55 AM »
It's that time of year again:  weather is hot and humid, and my hair is doing its annual imitation of the Wicked Witch of the West's famous 'do.

In an attempt to look professional at work, I've tried an endless parade of anti-frizz serums, none of which accomplish anything except draining my wallet.  I'd been using coconut or jojoba oil, but it doesn't work well and even one drop too much makes my hair look greasy.

The answer is giving yourself deep conditioning treatments.  I found that a mix of coconut oil and honey, left on overnight, does a pretty good job.  However, the effect only lasts a day or two.  Then I discovered Amla powder.  Has anyone tried this?  It's been great!  It's a little daunting at first, as it's sort of like giving your hair a mud bath, but it comes out looking and feeling better than after oil treatments and the effects last longer.  Better yet, it functions as a hair cleaner on its own, so you only have to rinse it out.  With oil, I have to shampoo it out, which sort of defeats the purpose.  And, I've found I no longer need conditioners, hair oils, gels, and other assorted expensive goop.

The only caveat is that it's dark colored.  No problem for me and I'm delighted as it might help cover the gray, but it could be an issue for blonde hair.

I've been using it twice a week, but as it improves hair quality over time I should eventually be able to reduce that to once a week, maybe less once frizz season is over.   I need to check the local Indian markets for it, but meantime it's fairly cheap to find on Amazon.

Interesting. Wonder if it would ruin my blonde streaks.  I make flax seed gel - it works fantastically, but is not always able to cope with the FL weather. I often use CurlKeeper to combat the extreme frizzies.

I use it in combination with my Henna when I color my hair, because it tones down some of the initial brassiness from the Henna, but haven't tried it as a hair mask on it's own. I currently look like I have an enormous puffball on my head, since I went from rainy cool weather on vacation to hot, sticky, humid weather at home, so it seems like a great time to give it a try! :)

Hi I would love to try this on my dark curly (sometimes frizzy) hair.  Is there a brand your recommend?  Also I would like to know how you apply it to your hair.  Ratios you use or what you mix into it.  Any help or input would be great, Thank you for sharing about this!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
