Post FIRE - partime work - coolworks.com
« on: March 02, 2015, 01:36:20 PM »
I've read enough posts to see that a lot of peoples definition includes some level of optional part-time work; either to allow for a lower amount of total assets, or to stretch funds if the market takes a downturn, or just to keep busy.

It got me thinking about travel, and seasonal jobs, and found this site: http://www.coolworks.com/jobs

Something like this: http://www.coolworks.com/town-of-mountain-village/highlighted-job/4650-gondola-operators-7
pays 14.00 an hour, includes a free season pass(if you are going in the winter), and voluntary medical insurance.

or this:
http://www.coolworks.com/colvig-silver-camps/highlighted-job/4696-seeking-arts-slash-crafts-coordinator-for-summer-c
pays 2000$ for 11 weeks and includes free room board and laundry

or:
http://www.coolworks.com/alaska-denali-travel/highlighted-job/4736-lead-hikes-and-provide-interpretation-in-stunning-
Hiking in Denali, while getting paid 11$ an hour, free lodging, and food.

Anyone actually doing something like this? Anyone else think this would be a fun way to fire?

I love the idea! Akin to that, I envision myself guest hosting for free lodging at National Parks. We are avid Park campers and I think it would be a good fit. At first I want to enjoy my freedom, but after we settle down to retirement life, picking up some guest hosting or cool jobs activities will be a fun diversion.

Also, at National Parks there are alot of folks who are hired on seasonally. Think Yellowstone National park size locations where there is a community with cabins for the workers to live in. That will not fit my retirement lifestyle (I know I will be an RVer) . I enjoy reading peoples badges which typically also show where they are from.

I like.  I've been thinking about some of these things as i'm single and will want 'cool' things to do.

Yes, every time I camp overnight at a National (and some State) Parks or Forests, I become intrigued by the resident guest host's setup.  And I've thought about doing something like that.  Now, if I could figure out what to do about my wife's tropical bird menagerie... (sigh).

Great find! I'm not at FIRE yet, but I really enjoyed browsing these jobs.

The husband of a friend of mine is a retired teacher. He got a job driving tourists from their hotels to a dog-sled mushing company in the Canadian Rocky mountains that runs day trips through the winter. He loves talking to people, answering questions about Canada, and the country he is driving in is beautiful, and he is having a blast. The season is fairly short and his wife has got contract work during the same period.

Love these ideas. I've been spending the last couple days thinking of multiple ways to make a little income and do fun temporary things while getting to see new places. I think this is my ideal FIRE life, at least for the first 5-10 years. I'm so excited thinking about the potential options today.

Saw someone post earlier on the forum about working on tall ships and it's caused an especially big surge in gleeful excitement.
Considering teaching English abroad for a bit too, or maybe even online as a side gig while I'm at home.

Wow, this thread just read my mind over the past few weeks. Defiantly not even close to FIRE myself but I have been struggling with quarter life crisis thoughts and would love to just get away for a few months, make some money and meet new people.
I was just researching cruise ship employment as well. Anyone have experience or thoughts?
