Post-fire haircuts?
« on: July 31, 2015, 01:24:56 PM »
What are you doing with your hair now that you are RE?  Shaving it all? Growing it out? SO cutting it?  Still going to the barber?  I've been getting "professional" looking hair cuts for 12 years and have never really liked having someone else cut my hair.  I'm really looking forward to firing up my clippers and shearing most of it off once I FIRE!

I would think that people post-fire would be doing what they were pre-fire, as most people have practiced frugality for some years by the time they fire. For instance, pre-fire I had my hair cut once every two years or so, and I probably do the same now. It gets cut to above shoulder length and grows until it is a bit less than halfway to my waist. I generally cut ends off when I think it is getting a bit endy.

However, if you want a scalp post-fire, don't let me stop you. I wonder why you aren't doing it now.

I've always dreamed of shaving my head completely. Once I didn't have to report to actual office.

Haven't paid for a hair cut in ten years. Shave my head once a month. Nothing changed once I FIRE'd.

My neighbor kindly threw out not one but two electric hair clippers with a case and all the attachments.  I took them apart, scraped out the hair, and deconned them with 90% isopropyl alcohol.  I successfully used them to cut my hair with instructions from YouTube.

I'm frustrated I didn't do this during my Army career. It was so damn simple and would've saved me so much money.

I've done it! I wouldn't recommend it. If you're going to grow it back out to something reasonable, you have you either contend with many bad mullet haircuts or be willing to trim and shape it monthly as it grows out. I felt it was more terrible than it was worth.

Hmmmm, I never considered that. Thanks for pointing it out.

I don't live in the US, but maybe I could look into a program like that. Hmmmmmmm...

There are programs like that in the US. Locks of Love is one.

I was bald for 8 years and grew it back when i put some weight back on. My rule was in shape I could be bald but not so much anymore I would look more like Buddha. Not quite that extreme but I too dont pay for haircuts. Put the trimmer on #1 and away it goes. Easy to maintain, doesnt cost a dime and probably right look for me.

Lol- only paid for one haircut in the last 10 years!  My wife has been cutting it, and she does a great job!  The only time I had to go the salon was the day before our wedding- she was to nervous!

I never really cared what I looked like, and only did what was necessary to be professional.  After I bailed on the cube I just let it grow for almost a year.   Then I started cutting it every 6 months or so.  I had a consulting gig pop up that I needed to occasionally look professional for and I found that my volunteer gigs required that, too.

I've always thought it would be a hoot to do the Guy Fieri (Diners Drive Ins and Dives) haircut with the blond spikes as the ultimate "I'm retired and FIRE, KMA!" haircut.    But the reality is I'll do the same thing I've always done and buy annual Great Clips "packs" of haircuts every Nov/Dec they run their $9.99 prepaid haircut special.   Buy a pack of 10 every year and $99.99 per year (plus tips) keeps you nicely shorn for a year with at least a little style.   And just the "I need to go get a haircut" will give me something "scheduled" to look forward to which becomes strangely important after FIRE when life is no longer controlled by MicroSoft Outlook calendar "manic, annoying, over scheduling" pop up reminders...

This.  Or almost this.  It works sort of like this:  I notice the dog's hair is getting a little long.  I shave him.  Wife then takes same shears and cuts mine to about 1/4".

The dog is "the hair canary."

Long hair with bangs, same as Spartana. Easy-peasy. No coloring either. Total self-care. When I get tired of it long, I stick it on top of my head with a bungee or jaw clip...instant "short" hair look. I see women with pretty, nicely- highlighted, short bobs, but I could not imagine paying the expenses of that (well, yes I could--that's one reason I don't do it anymore). And taking care of my hair 100% by myself also gives me 100% freedom...I don't have to arrange my life around my salon visits. And that is more important than the money.

Same here, my wife cuts my hair, for at least the last 21 years.
I don't know how she learned, but I have never had what I thought was a bad haircut.

We aren't fired yet but we cut our own hair. I use the clippers. My wife the scissors.

I volunteer to be a model at al high-end hair salon.  Normally their haircuts are $150 ( I have no idea why anyone would pay that), but I get them for $15 and find the experience really interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes when teaching people how to cut hair.  Plus the students are SO HAPPY because they are starting a new career.

I used to shave my head but when I met my Wife I'm afraid I was not allowed to cut my own hair anymore..:)

So I was paying about $14 for a haircut but a local high volume salon started offering gents cuts for $10 and they do a pretty darn good job. So every 4 to 6 weeks I have to spend money.

I did plead for "an old retired guy" special but it didn't work.. 1) they really don't believe I'm retired and 2) I'm certainly not old..:)

Hubs shaves his head and beard to 1/2 inch every month, then I get out the scissors and trim the stray hairs. My own curly hair gets cut twice a year by Devachan (the Curly Girl salon) and trimmed by me and Hubs the rest of the time.

I have used the FlowBee for the past 25 years.  It's amazing how much that little contraption has saved me.  I even use it on my little guy too who is now 3.

I have my wife cut my hair with some Wahl clippers with some extra-long combs (as I have a side-part style, not a buzz cut).

My wife gets her hair cut professionally, but infrequently (maybe a couple of times a year). I ought to get her to start getting it cut at a hairdressing school...

My neighbor kindly threw out not one but two electric hair clippers with a case and all the attachments.  I took them apart, scraped out the hair, and deconned them with 90% isopropyl alcohol.  I successfully used them to cut my hair with instructions from YouTube.

Don't they have Army barbers that give you free haircuts?

Pretty boring, but I do exactly what I did before FIRE -- get it cut about every 6 weeks.

My last haircut was over 13 years ago... 30 April 2002 to be precise, just over a month before my military retirement.

It's a foot-long ponytail, but as the hairs grow longer their weight seems to yank them out of their follicles.  I'm also balding on the front, so eventually I'll end up with the short-haired or sheared look again.  But for the next 20 years or so I hope to just let nature take its course.

Please, please do NOT let this turn into a skullet!  You will know when it is time to give up the pony tail (when it is more tail than pony).

Ha!  New vocabulary word...

I think I have a few years left before I have to put sunscreen all the way to the back of my head.

I think the easiest answer is to let it grow.   The second is a number 3 once a month.     If you are into it you could even volunteer the use of you clippers at nursing homes,  homeless shelters,  daycares etc...  People love free haircuts and you would love sharing your new found skill with grateful people.

Someday I would like to set up "Free Haircuts" booths at community fairs with a suggested donation that would then be sent to a local homeless shelter.  Smiles all around!
