I had been trying to convince a few others that they had enough to retire, so 'I'm waiting for you to follow me' was a not so subtle reminder to them. I like to think it was frisking EPIC, but I wasn't there, so that's just in my head...

3 more days. I think I'm finally starting to get nervous about being unemployed and leaving for 4-5 months to walk through the woods. Seems like I've had persistent heartburn for the last couple days. Good thing there's a week of vacation in there to take my mind off of things!

2 more days! I turned in 2 of my 3 badges today. They'll take the last one Friday when they debrief me. I said goodbye to a couple buddies I've known for 6-8 years who sit at another building (one of the badges I turned in). Saying goodbye is making it all start to feel pretty real. Though I've spent more time disliking my job than liking it there are still a few people whose company I have enjoyed over the years. Realizing that they are now gone from my life forever makes me feel the weight of the fact that this chapter of my life is closing. Like a newly finished book, a hand is holding one side of the volume and swinging it closed. On Friday the pages will press back together for the last time. I keenly feel the effect of loss aversion in the small tug of sadness I have for never enjoying those people's company again, despite the fact that I would not consider staying here to prolong our acquaintance.

^i've been keeping in touch with a few folks this way. Keeping in touch long term is not my strong suit - but almost a year into this thing we call FIRE, and this is working so far. But, it does take work. My schedule is no longer a limiting factor, but their schedules are oft problematic.

I didn't realize you were so close! (ha), but am with you on the decision to go now, and to hike the AT.

I haven't picked the actual last day, but it'll be first week in August for me. Similar to some of your thoughts on what will happen after you leave and the fact that it will not be your problem I have those thoughts as well. Coworker (subordinate) was unprofessional at a hearing yesterday, and complaining afterwards about the proceedings. Came back to the office and used the word "sucked" about the meeting to our CEO. I want to have a talk with her today, but nah...maybe not.

Anyway, I'll be heading NOBO in mid August and wave as I go by. I'll be on the BMW with two wheels over on the Blue Ridge Parkway (or Skyline Drive depending on how far south you'll be in late August).

I've enjoyed reading your words and can identify with you.

T-minus 24 hours until I'm a free man! I have to be in at 7:30am for my debrief (YUCK!) but the silver lining means my day is done at 3:30pm. I'm REALLY starting to get excited about it at this point. I keep reminding myself to slow down and take in the moments. It'll be the last time for a lot of things. I'm trying not to be so lost in my excitement that I forget to live in the moment and enjoy these last couple days.

Nah. I thought I would be emotional about it but while I felt a smidge of sadness that I would likely never see those places or faces again I was so ready and relieved that I think it muted any tears that might have come. There's one person in particular I'll miss talking to.

I actually haven't even had a chance to process it. I immediately came home and started getting packed for Jamaica. We have to get up at 4:30 am tomorrow morning for our flight. Maybe it'll sink in down there during the week some time.
