Thanks for the update. Bit of a dick move to tell your bosses behind your back but if it's working out okay then no harm done. Are you retiring very early for your workplace?

I was thinking back to the paper chain. When I have a date I'm going to do it with paperclips. Same principal but slightly more subtle. Unless I have a telecommute position: if so I'm having a giant poster sized countdown clock and to hell with the excess paper.

Yes I thought it was a bit of a "dick" move myself but it's turning out ok.   I'm only on short term projects and lower stress because I think they are too afraid to kick me out early because  they can't seem to settle on anyone to hire for anything (one open position has been open for 10 months, big boss doesn't "like" any of the candidates).   Coworkers are on long hours high stress.  Me , I do my thing and leave after 8 hrs.  I've got no fear at this point and it's awesome!  Still I'm sick of the grind and can't wait to be done.

Interesting update on the "countdown" charts and paper chains everyone suggested.   There is a big project in it's final months at work and there is a wall chart related to it on the wall near my cube.  The title is "The Drive to Go Live".    Since I've been "outed" as retiring, I've made a joke that I'm making my own chart.  "The FIRE to Retire".  I'll put my countdown on that.

I'm a computer nerd.  I had a perl script that would give me a nice to-the-second time until FIRE.

Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight

Hi, I just wanted to give everyone an update to close out this topic.   I retired on 7/7/2017.    So far it's actually been BETTER than I dreamed and I dreamed BIG.   So don't be afraid of it.  I find I have no desire at all to go back to a corporate job and the money part is working out better than expected.

So happy for you! Travel now if you want too because you never know. We have had friends die or become very disabled in 50's and 60's.  WE are taking 1-2 big trips a year in addition to small ones in the car.  You will really love having control over your time, activities, etc.   The last 5 years have been great.
