Job offer fell through
« on: July 17, 2015, 11:55:04 AM »
I posted weeks ago that I had in theory accepted a gig at 85/hr with 10 hours weekly overtime.  I found out today that HR put the kibosh on management backfilling their maternity leave shortages.  They are also asking all contractors (making much less than 85/hr) to take 15% pay cuts.

I remain gloriously unproductive and it feels great.

Well, too bad it didn't work out, but you didn't really want to go back to work, anyway. I bet if you put your mind to it, you could find work somewhere else for that rate.

I've seen a few rate cuts in my time but never took one. At that point, it's a race to the bottom and won't ever end. Same thing when companies offer to "hire full time" instead of extend your contract. Tell them you appreciate the offer and will consider it once details are available, then delay as long as possible and finally turn it down.

Also - What kind of bizarro world does this company live in that they let HR dictate business decisions? HR's job is to protect the company from getting sued, that's it.

Happy non-re-employment!  No commute, no work clothes, no bad coffee, no meetings, no deadlines, no bosses.....

The message may have been sent from HR, but the likelihood is that the decision to send the message came from corporate executives.

Or HR was concerned about this setting a precedent or being inconsistent with some practice or policy.... Or they just got blamed....

I've worked at this company before and HR is a peculiar beast there.  I suspect that they are just the messenger on compensation issues though.

I'm at least half glad it fell through.  I don't actually need the money and I sure do enjoy being a Man of Leisure.

Yep, I too found that once I had FIREd it took much more money than I had been making to get me back to a job.  In my case, my price was 200% of my previous hourly rate -- but just for short duration gigs.  The same has proven true for my wife.  And I can see that at some point (maybe already?) there's going to be NO price that will get me back into anything that could feel "job like."
