I may only be FIRE-battical, but still get to see some cool swamp-parks in a new city, on a weekday afternoon.

^Thanks @Dicey. Off on a road trip tomorrow then will go overseas this spring for a bike camping trip. Miss my pup.but much easier to do travel things now

sparty -- enjoy that bike trip!  I'm planning to road trip it out west this summer, so if you're around and still in CA, and we somehow cross paths, I'll buy ya a beer!
Thanks @dude (and @stachy too). Congrats on your soon to be FIRE. It's pretty awesome! You're always welcome at Chez Spartana... wherever that ends up being. Currently outside of Palm Spring after a week hiking around all the spectacular desert super blooms in SoCal. Headed north to Mammoth and Tahoe next. After that????? Change my flight and bike trip plans to Europe for fall so will be road trip in the USA until then so hopefully we can meet up somewhere once you are a free man ;-).  No FIRE porn pics of the desert wildflowers against the snow capped mountains here but it's beautiful.

So jealous of the superbloom!  Saw recently that a San Diego area park had to shut down access to the park because it was overrun with people wanting to take photos. :-(  A good friend of mine is a Tahoe skier and has been urging me to come out there for spring skiing. Looks like some places might be open until July!!

I just saw that as well. This years is supposedly even bigger than the one two years ago. I flew out to San Diego with my mom in 2017 and it was awesome. If anyone has the chance to check out Anza Borrego while it's happening I highly recommend it!

Tahoe has gotten over 45 ft of snow this winter.  The resorts will be open for a long time.  Now is definitely the time to ski.

I take a lot of naps. Life is good.

Wow. So envious.  Makes me wonder if I could really swing the earliest of my three candidate dates.

Going mid week to avoid the crowds! One of the best part of FIRE imho. Tahoe resorts and Mammoth aren't closing until July 7.

I can't get pics to upload, even when they're within the file size limitations. Is there a trick I don't know about?

There are definitely worse things to be associated with...so, yes I suppose it's good. :)

Deb certainly displays a much more elegant script than I ever did.

We both FIRED in 2018. Spent October/November 2018 in Florida and January - March 2019 in Malaga, Spain.
The next few months will be spent in Florida, Switzerland and Berlin, Germany.
Perfect life!
We travel, exercise every day, eat healthily, sleep soundly and generally feel much, much better compared to our previous lives.
Thinking back, I don't know how I could endure spending my days in an office, chained to the screen for hours on end.
I am so grateful I discovered MMM and this great community.

Retire On Time. Thatís for us older folks who canít really qualify as retired early. In my case thereís a pension coming so kinda stuck until that kicks in. Sooo, if I decide to ROT, Iíll be ROTting. And youíll be able to refer to me as ROTted or ROTten.

Quite simple, really.😂

Do you need your full pension?
Can you drop to part time and maintain pension contributions?
Do you enjoy your job enough to reach full pension without sacrificing years of life quality?
Could you walk away with a certain pension lump sum, invest it and leave it to grow while you CoastFI doing something really interesting?

If you aren't satisfied with the path you are on, look at your alternatives.

Do you need your full pension? I could live in a box on the beach. The wife and kids, notsomuch. So Iíd say maybe.

Can you drop to part time and maintain pension contributions? in theory yes, in practice no. Employer will not offer PT work as they lose a full time slot for doing so.
Do you enjoy your job enough to reach full pension without sacrificing years of life quality? for now, yes. I happen to like my job. I do see some changes coming that if they come about could turn that to a no. So far, I seem to be one of the lucky ones.

Could you walk away with a certain pension lump sum, invest it and leave it to grow while you CoastFI doing something really interesting? unfortunately, no

If you aren't satisfied with the path you are on, look at your alternatives. Iím reasonably happy, but as I noted, that could be about to change. I also have a golden handcuffs pension arrangement. I get a large increase in my pension for 6 years and 75% of my medical insurance paid for less than 2 more years. Even if the job sucked, and it doesnít, it doesnít make much economic sense to walk away. Retiring on time on the other hand is looking much more attractive. r.

Thanks for the questions!

I'm only weeks away from FIRE now, burning off the last of my vacation time this week in a sort of pre-FIRE test run. Went for a walk with a neighbor and saw this temporary visitor in our park. The Western Palm Warblers are only here for a short time on their way back to Canada.

'Ill bite.  Spent the winter in Florida in a rental and enjoyed the great weather!  Came back to Michigan in April and started working again on our lake cottage which used to be an old 1930"s inn.  We are fixing it up, something my husband loves to do.

Meanwhile, I spend my days going to free Silver sneakers classes at a local gym and babysitting my grandchild on Thursdays.  Also I have planned our trip to Europe this fall, 3 weeks including a cruise of the Norwegian fjords and than a 2 week land tour through other parts of Europe ending in Paris.  A lot of the trip was paid for by travel hacking credit cards.

In between I quilt as a hobby and am trying to use up my stash of fabric that I have accumulated over the years.  Life is good!

At first I read that as wombats got 5x their size in the winter and got really confused.

HAH HAH!

No, the wombats in Tassie are smaller than the ones on the mainland, but the Roaring Forties (winds), come all the way from South Africa in winter, so the waves are enormous.

Thanks for this beautiful warbler picture @Parizade!  I love birds.  I lived in your neck of the woods for many years (grew up in the Driftless region) but I don't remember ever seeing a Western Palm Warbler.  Neat.

They don't stay here, they just migrate through at this time of year. I saw several today at the lovely Weaver Dunes conservation area. I saw a towhee too but didn't get a good shot of him.

You've inspired me to get out there with my binoculars @Parizade!  I always watch the birds that live around our house, but it's been a while since I went on a bird walk.  :)

You probably know about the Raptor Resource Center in Decorah IA . . .  They have cameras on many raptor nests, including a pair of peregrine falcons on the bluff above Lock & Dam #7 in La Crescent, MN.  That's one of the nests I check in on regularly:  https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/gsb-falcons/

Excellent! I find it so soul-soothing to walk (or even just sit) in nature and just BE in the moment observing what's happening around me.

I LOVE their bird cams, the eaglets are so cute right now! Have you seen the Mississippi River Flyway Cam? It's like a virtual bird walk on the river.

I have!  I watched the Flyway Cam all winter.  Amazing.  I was surprised at the amount of other wildlife (foxes, coyotes, etc.) they captured on film out on the ice.  Super interesting.

Cooling down on our morning walk...
...
Approximately where is that?  A sandy beach backing onto a forest looks like bliss for walking.

On the South Coast of NSW (Australia). That creek flows into the ocean about 20 metres down from the spot in the photo, so we get river walks, bush walks and beach walks all in the same outing :)

That place looks AMAZING..care to share the actual location?

Could be a lot of places south of Sydney. The Royal National Park, or any of the other National Parks all the way down the coast could give you a similar view.

And I'm on a southbound coastall trip from Canada through Oregon.  Any chance you'll  make it as far north as Coos Bay (where I'll  turn inland) this week?

My wife and I are wrapping up a cross country trip that we've been on since April 1. I can never get pics to upload on this site so some sentences will just have to suffice.

Cities we hit: New Orleans, San Antonio, Sedona, Moab, San Luis Obispo, San Francisco, Portland, Olympia, Seattle

National Parks: Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Olympic, Yellowstone, Badlands

National Monuments: White Sands, Coronado, Natural Bridges, Jewel Cave

National Recreation Areas: Glen Canyon, Columbia Gorge

National Memorials: Mount Rushmore

There were several state parks as we came up the coast of California. And since we've been camping in the car mostly we've been in numerous National Forests and BLM lands.

It's been an amazing trip. Here's a map of our route.

Month or 2 long road trip from Mexico to Canada along the Calif coast. Pics of redwoods and coast around Trinidad. Pic wouldn't post using data and no wifi

And I'm on a southbound coastall trip from Canada through Oregon.  Any chance you'll  make it as far north as Coos Bay (where I'll  turn inland) this week?
I don't think so as I moved a bit further south along the coast (was 105 where I was at!!) to find some cooler weather and will stay here awhile with a friend. Have fun and I've enjoyed reading about your kayaking on JSI.  I'm not good a taking photos so very bad but...

@spartana & @Cherry Lane - you may already be too far south, but if you haven't passed through Manzanita (Oregon coast), it's lovely & one of my favorite places in the world. Also, stays pretty cool almost year round! Looks like it will only be around 68-70 today/this week. We will be there next week. Can't wait!

The kayaking was fun. I believe @Cherry Lane will concur. :)

Now, I realize that this thread was partially created in reaction to the closing of my Journal. I have since started a new one and I have resumed sharing my own brand of FIRE-porn there. But you know what? In FIRE the opportunities to capture the beauty around is so bountiful that I think I can also share some here as well.

Salish Sea paddle at sunset. Cherry Lane soaking it all in....

Dang! I missed Manzanita by just a few miles this morning as I came down from Saddle Mountain to head south.

My advice in return: if you haven't hiked Cascade Head, do it!  The scene from the first (of two) viewpoint is the best thing I've seen (in my all of three days experience) on the Oregon coast.

@Cherry Lane - I've never done Cascade Head! Thanks for the recommendation. A few other friends have mentioned it, and we've done lots of hiking around there. I'll add it to the list.

Thanks for the tip I will check it out once (if) I get that far north. I finally found cool weather on the coast so will stay put at least until tomorrow then head north again. Assuming I can Find camping. One of the big problems in travelling during the summer is both increased cost and availability for every kind of lodging. Especially on weekends. Plus crowds. I generally don't travel in summer though.

@spartana Are you familiar with the WA discover pass? Worth it when you get that far north. For $30 you get access to "free" camping at WA DNR sites. The one I was at last weekend, Bear Creek on the Olympic peninsula, wasn't even full on a SAT night.
