FIRE porn -- luring you all to the lighter side of life
« on: February 25, 2019, 08:38:59 AM »
While many of us enjoy tracking our post-FIRE journeys in personal journals here on the forum, some have decided not to.  (Looking at you, @Jon_Snow -- SOB!)  So I thought I'd start this little thread as a place for us to consolidate our FIRE porn stories and photos -- you know, the things we hope people will hook our fellow forum friends on the idea of FIREing so that they can take back their time (and hopefully spend more of it with us, both virtually and in real life.

It's a beautiful day here in Seattle so I'll add a photo of my own lovely corner of the world a bit later when I go out for a walk.

This is a great idea for a thread! I hope it gets more contributions. I need to read stuff like this on days when I'm contemplating OMY to keep me focused on the goal.

In exchange, I promise to post some awesome pictures of my own when I'm FIREd in a year or two. :)

Great thread idea! Finally get a chance to brag...

I finally quite full time work in December last year! I'm 28 years old and have been doing a government job for 10 years, don't have a massive portfolio but do have a paid off unit (my half anyway) and have a very low cost of living. BUT! I live 800m from the beach in the most perfect part of the world, have family close by, an amazing fiancee, and pretty much on-tap work because of my niche.

So I have spent this year so far: Waking up, slowly making breakfast, going to the beach, coming home to play xbox, do a little lifting and nap. On repeat, day after day. I have other hobbies that I feel like I'm missing out on (mountain biking, climbing, fishing, camping, learning to surf/play guitar etc...) but I'm not letting myself feel bad about FOMO as I want to do decompression right.

That said I'm off on a work trip for three months soon which will nicely pad out the stache, but after that it will be decompression take two I guess. I'm looking forward to it!

Been FIRE’d 3 1/2 years now and still loving every minute of it...we moved to south Florida where we enjoy our 83 degree February days regularly, go to the beach often, volunteer every week, read on the lanai while listening to the fountain on our pond, travel whenever we want to and pretty much do whatever strikes our fancy whenever it strikes our fancy.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw this thread title...

Anyways, some contributions:
Daily walks last Feb in NC:

Van Life pose meets credit card churning hotel:

Had an afternoon appointment in Vietnam:

Utah:

Also Utah, was either in Bryce, or mountain bike trail in Red Canyon:

Was a nice reminder. Right now I'm hiding from snow and cold and grey skies, because sometimes you make poor choices :)

Seems like good encourage each other. Here are a couple of photos from my first retirement which I took after I had enough saved to retire at a normal age and cover a one year RTW trip.

The view a one mile walk from our house. I make this walk a few times a week and just sit on the bulkhead for 20-30 minutes soaking in the coastal view and the sounds of the water, marsh grasses, etc.

No photos here, and I'm not FIRE (nor will I possibly ever be), but I live a pretty post-FIRE type lifestyle.

This post isn't about travel or leisure, but about the tremendous civility of living a life where you are in charge of your own time and energy.

I just bought a condo last week unexpectedly, I wasn't planning to start looking until late spring, but a gem property popped up after a sale fell through and caught my attention.

I called the realtor on Wednesday:
-"When would you like to see the unit? I can set up an evening viewing as early as next Monday"
-"Actually I'm free during the day"
-"Oh? Are you free right now?'
-"Yep, I can be there in 5 minutes"

I had a bid in, a counter offer, and a signed agreement by Friday. By Monday afternoon I had secured an inspector, a lawyer, and a mortgage broker, all documentation needed for the mortgage was assembled and submitted, and by Monday night I had an email confirming mortgage approval.

I can't imagine how tedious and long this whole process would have been if most of this business needed to be conducted during lunch and evening hours. My day job made business hours phone calls and computer work impossible. It would have been a drawn out nightmare.

Doctors appointments, grocery shopping, lane swim at the pool, community center classes, driving to places, etc, etc, etc.
It's all just sooooo much more civilized when your days are mostly free. The world runs on business hours, which are the hours that no one has available.

Not to mention down time.
I don't know that I could ever go back to a reality where I have early starts, daily rush hour traffic, and obligatory nonsense all day long, all week long.
Just...no.

I love work. LOVE it.
That's why I'll probably never give up work entirely, but I don't regret moving away from having a normal day-job, even though I did while still having a negative net worth.

Most days I sit in bed for awhile, drink my coffee slowly and ponder what I want to accomplish with my day. Things like paid work, house work, exercise, whatever, all kind of blend together as just various responsibilities that I do as the inspiration strikes.

I'm so much more productive left to my own devices that it makes more sense for me to just be left off-leash to do as I please. This is why I may never actually "retire" because I'm already living the way I had always planned to live in retirement. I just bailed on doing the years of day-job in the first place.

Today, I have a condo inspection, a casual meeting for my side hustle, and an evening meeting with my volunteer exec committee, so this morning I plan on spending a few hours drinking tea and reading on the sofa with my dogs lying on my feet.

So, my "FIRE porn" is all about reflecting on the value of freedom.

Well said! I started a side business during my third regular job and kept it during my third and current "retirement". It will be three years in May. The longest I've stayed out of office so far. I'm not sure I'll ever go back. Most days I feel exactly as you described. Occasionally I have a day like yesterday and get almost nothing on my list done. And those days I think "I'd be nice to still get paid for the off days" and just go home at 5... But on the whole life is just so much better with the freedom to skip the crowds and flex my schedule however I need to.

GREAT IDEA for a post llhamo!!!  And I love the responses.

I don't have any sunny beach photos but @Exflyboy does.

And I also want to see a @spartana FIRE blog!  It would be awesome! I recall tales of skiing in the morning and beach volleyball in the afternoon. Spartana rocks!

I can definitely relate to this.  In preparation for our upcoming move I was able to fly to Pittsburgh twice and field calls about things all day without having to sneak around or beg for time off.  I love having my time as my own.

My wife and I leave for a 7-month tour of the Western US on April 1st. We're hitting many of the national parks west of Texas. With the exception of having to be in two places on specific dates the whole trip is unplanned. Winging it is my favorite kind of travel since it inevitably leads to all kinds of unusual adventures. Will be sure to post some pics in this thread.

My wife and I made a trip like that two summers ago. It was an epic trip but I do wish we had spend 7 months on it. I posted a lot of photos on the first half of the trip to my blog but then fell behind and never caught up. Now that I think of it my blog is probably 80% "FIREporn".

Are any Alaskan National parks included in "west of Texas"?

That's true. Our little green employees are making better money every year. We can already work less than 1/2 time and still be completely FI in less than 10 years.

On the South Coast of NSW (Australia). That creek flows into the ocean about 20 metres down from the spot in the photo, so we get river walks, bush walks and beach walks all in the same outing :)

I feel cooler just looking at that photo. I'm guessing I know the approximate vicinity. I love that district for its crystal clear blue water and white sand.

It's all continental US travel. I don't know how we could get Alaska in. I think we're already going to find we can't get to everything we want to.

Maybe next year. The drive across Canada is worth doing even without AK at this end. AK has some great parks and adventures waiting too.

Sounds fantastic and thanks for sharing.  We've considered settling somewhere quite a bit more north than that in the past but it's come up again in recent conversations.  For now though we're a long way from there distance wise as we're currently in Cyprus.  FIRE does give plenty of options though...

Yesterday I got my exercise wandering around Biosphere 2.  This is a place I've wanted to visit for many years.  Since I'm retired I could, and did, go on a weekday and take my time.  I went on 2 of the tours, and I'll go back for at least one more in a few days.  There are 3 more places around Phoenix I want to see before I again move 75 mile NE and about 4,000' up to my summer park.  I can pick any day I want to go touring and only need to consult the weather.

Everyone's stories and photos are so great (and @Malkynn non-FIRE stories are always great and inspirational). Hoping people will post more.

I've been FIREd a long time and have had quite a few adventures over the years, and hope to have many more now that I no longer have pets, but a non-working at home life is pretty damn sweet too. I'm working on a FIRE blog starting from the beginning of my FIRE. If I'm brave I'll post it here.
Oh no, last I recall @spartana, your sister was sharing her home with the Barkinator. I hope this is still the case.

Sadly Barks passed away several months ago after a long and happy FIRE life of road trips to exotic smelling places around the western states. We were together until the end which is why I stayed put in one place so long. Now it's off to adventuring again this spring.

Hopefully these photos come through, or at least one of them.  Last one has a couple random boulderers in it.

Oh, so sorry for your loss, sparty. I know the Barkinator had the best dog mom  ever.

Thanks! She was a great pup and a fun (but obnoxious) travel companion. Miss her a lot but this is the first time since FIREing that I don't have any pets so plan to take advantage of longer (maybe full time) travel opportunities for a few years. In a way it feels like I'm starting a brand new FIRE life and am just as enthusiastic for all the millions of things the future may hold as I was when I first left my job more than a decade ago.
What an unexpected gift: A new lease on the FIRE life! I wish you all the best in your new adventures. I know the Barkinator will travel (quietly) in your heart, wherever your journey leads you.

Sorry to hear about the Barkinator @spartana.
She went on so many adventures with you.
She was small but she was mighty.

Enjoy your trip. Sounds like a whole new FIRE for you.

There are 3 more places around Phoenix I want to see before I again move...-

My wife found this place. Didn't know if you or others in the area heard of it...

https://www.phoenixherp.com/visit/tours.html

You have to email or call to sign up for a tour and get the unlisted location (it's in what looks like a regular neighborhood in N. Scottsdale). I don't really like zoos, but this was VERY worth the $20. There are a ton of awesome lizards and turtles and snakes -if you like that sort of thing. The tour guide was really knowledgeable and engaging. Best zoo-type thing I've even been to.

Of course, since we were free whenever, we were able to get in whenever they had an opening.

That place looks interesting.  I may try to go after I move up to Payson.  I'm not really that far away from here in the Valley even in the summer.

I haven't kept super up to date on MMM the past year or more -- when did you lose the pup, spartana?!  Sorry to hear that.

Edited to add:  Nevermind, just read subsequent posts.

^Thanks @Dicey. Off on a road trip tomorrow then will go overseas this spring for a bike camping trip. Miss my pup.but much easier to do travel things now

sparty -- enjoy that bike trip!  I'm planning to road trip it out west this summer, so if you're around and still in CA, and we somehow cross paths, I'll buy ya a beer!

After I left my job, DH and I have traveled to China to 2 months and Taiwan for 1 month. We moved from a northeast state to Southern California. Couldn't be happier during the winter. Now we are getting little travel itch and are looking into a trip to China in April. The whole 2-3 week trip probably costs same as in any cities in US.

Thanks @dude (and @stachy too). Congrats on your soon to be FIRE. It's pretty awesome! You're always welcome at Chez Spartana... wherever that ends up being. Currently outside of Palm Spring after a week hiking around all the spectacular desert super blooms in SoCal. Headed north to Mammoth and Tahoe next. After that????? Change my flight and bike trip plans to Europe for fall so will be road trip in the USA until then so hopefully we can meet up somewhere once you are a free man ;-).  No FIRE porn pics of the desert wildflowers against the snow capped mountains here but it's beautiful.
