58 weeks until FIRE.

That is all.

I just had to share with someone....anyone else have a countdown going?

Edit: Sorry, that should read 48 weeks until FIRE. That's what I get for trying to type something in a hurry, lol

In to follow your final days. Post details! FIRE threads are better with the story alongside. Congratulations.

Edit: thought this said 58 days not weeks lol. Still a final stretch nevertheless

I have a countdown in a Excel doc. I don't have an exact date since it is a few years out, and I like to fool with it to play tricks on myself. "What if I retire on my birthday in 5 years?" "What if retire on January 1 in 4 years?"

Maybe I'm a bit too frustrated at work and this is my outlet.

Days.... I have an excel sheet, don't know that it is great (not flexible calc based on dates, but manual track based on end date)
I started the countdown with less than a year left, otherwise it would be too depressing....
Last day in July...

Hey So Close, what happened to July 4, 2015?  Independence Day should definitely trump April Fool's Day, no?

Currently at 950K. Daughter moved out, roommate moved in, realized I was FI. Set a date a few months ago. May continue to work pt past April 1 next year if my boss needs me to during the transition (small office). Having "the talk" in January.

I personally use the Mint goal setting feature, and it tells me if I'm on track.

I'm trying for 68 weeks (August) to qualify for partial retiree medical ($200/month indexed that kicks in 23 years from now).  Not necessary, but nice.  Mint shows me at 63 weeks away.  It's so far off at this point, that a large correction will throw off my plans like many people's, but the work visa I'm planning to get for Spain would become active mid-September, so August is pretty perfect.

ACA issues mostly, I wrote about it my journal if you want to take a look.  Hopefully the April Fools will be on the company, not me!

So Close, the ACA/Supreme Court case is one of the reasons I'm holding off until next year as well.

Nice.. $950k, plus you have diversified your income source by adding rent to the stream!

If the market tanks between now and then, will this affect the date, or do you have a enough cash/bonds to ride out the downturn?

Thanks Exflyboy. :)

Taxable accounts are a 40-60 split, stocks-bonds. I believe it would ride out a downturn. I spend so little right now, having a roommate really helps with that. Also waiting to see what the Supreme Court decision does to the ACA.

Adding previous thread on different countdown practices:  forum.mrmoneymustache.com/welcome-to-the-forum/countdown-clocks/

I've also been thinking about ACA and the 2016 election and thinking any new target date should be after the November elections so I moved my countdown calculator from June 2016 to January 2017.

This is exactly what happened to me.  Last summer I was planning to retire in a year or so, meaning this coming summer.  But work kept beating me down, and in the end I pulled the plug in December.  It's been almost five alarm-clock-free months now, and for what it's worth I have no regrets whatsoever about shaving off those few extra months.

48 weeks is such a wonderfully small number...   But if the least little thing happens in the markets or whatever and the expectation is so high that magically 48 weeks is FIRE day, it's just asking for trouble in your emotional happiness in general and with reaching FIRE in particular.    Here's a little trick on managing your own expectations...   I used to manage IT projects and always marveled at how teams would put all their energy into a goal toward a specific date and then there was no emotion "left in the tank" for the "next day" when all hell broke loose with the bosses after issues occurred due to installation of software, changing organization, etc.    Good bosses helped us expect the project to continue well beyond "D-Day" (aka, deployment day!)

Reality is you know your number.    Then expect another year, expect a setback you didn't cause, expect the number to change a bit as you finalize your financial FIRE plan, whatever...   Then laugh your ass off and be happy you worried when you retire in 48, 75 or 100+ weeks.   Just assume the number is 100 weeks to undercommit and overdeliver to yourself!

I4N, that's something to think about, for sure.

But even if I took a 20% hit...my WR would still be less than 3% for what I need....

Following lhamo's format:

Target date for leaving current job:  June 4

Actual work days left: 17
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.

target date July 31st 2017
54 paydays
less than 500 workdays
less than 400 in the office.

may say fuck it earlier (actually I'm hoping my job gets outsourced in 2017 and the company pays me off).

would be earlier but these cats and children still demand food and shit...

Just make sure you don't make additional commitments to hold you there even longer.  I guess it depends on how much you like your job, and how badly the bridge would be scorched if you pulled the pin early.

I have a 'commitment' through the end of 2017, but don't plan on staying that long.

Hanging around here has been dangerous. Flicked all but one long term client (less than 12 months) and wrapping up the others by the end of July. Felt fantastic after doing this :)
