So if you get any of your entertainment from Youtube, or follow any non-political news, you probably heard of Logan Paul and the controversial video he posted. While visiting Japan's Aokigahara forest, he came across the body of man who had hanged himself, decided to film it, edit the video, create a thumbnail, and stick it on Youtube. He later took down the video and halfassed an apology, saying he intended to raise awareness. While you might think this sounds legitimate, if you know anything about Logan Paul and the type of content he normally puts up, you'll figure out this is full of shit. At best, you could consider most of his content juvenile, full of dumb little "pranks" in short clips (he got his start on Vine when that was still a thing). There are much better written articles on what's wrong with his content in the grand scheme of things.
Youtube itself has also had a really rough year. If you're only watching the occasional funny video, or only watching mega corporate channels, you probably wouldn't have noticed. But individual creators, especially smaller ones, took a huge hit in 2017 with what's known as Adpocolypse. Without going into mega details, investors don't trust Youtube, creators don't trust Youtube, and now with Youtube's complete and utter lack of response to the video above (Youtube did not remove the video, even though it clearly violated it's own guidelines), consumers are losing trust in Youtube.
It's easy to kind of say "fuck Youtube" and go on your way. But I think it's important to remember that yeah, of course there are jackasses on the internet, but there are also good people too.
Enter Jacksepticeye.
I've been a fan of Jacksepticeye for a while. I find most of his videos entertaining. He's a gamer and plays all sorts of video games, so it curbs my desire to buy games. He's Irish, and I enjoy the accent :). He's loud and funny, he makes fun of himself and doesn't cry when he loses. He leaves his ego at the door unless he's being ridiculous about it (he was, of course, the Happy Wheels king). But what I enjoy most about him is that he's cultivated a community of good and decent people. His fans are good people. I mean, it's the internet, so of course there are assholes. But he focuses on the positives. He also, before the whole LP controversy, started being open with his own mental health struggles, which really resonated with a lot of fans, myself included.
The point is, Jacksepticeye, like Logan Paul, is also a very popular Youtuber (unfortunately not *as* famous). But instead of being a dickwad, he used his fame and popularity in a positive way. He ran a charity stream this past Sunday to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. With just a few days notice (I think he announced it the Thursday before), he set a goal of $50,000, with a stretch goal of $100,000. They blew past that, and are now sitting at over $225,000.
I think this is incredible.

Just wanted to share this. The LP story had me fuming and upset, and I know that sentiment was shared by many friends. On the one hand, I'm glad the LP story was picked up and the general consensus was "this is not okay" (but by god are his fans scary). On the other hand, I really wish this story was picked up as well - a quarter of a million dollars is not a small chunk of change, and it just shows that our society doesn't like feel good stories as much as "the world sucks" stories. But as Mr. Rogers said - look for the helpers.

It was terrible what he did. My kids told me about it before it hit the news as they followed him so that's a lot of his audience. In the news they basically said Youtube is way undermanned in there policing of content and first they took it down then put it back up and said it was ok then took it down again. And if I understood it right he is in a movie coming out. Once again a "Celebrity " that uses their forum for all the wrong reasons. Their is no way no one could convince me he didn't know what he was doing was wrong. But there will be those that will stick up for him with the freedom of speech BS. And I agree his apology was totally half assed.
