Saw 'Fleabg Season 1' available on dvd at the library!

Checked it out. Watched the first 2 episodes and ejected it. Unwatchable, for me.

I had heard good things about it. Disappointing.

Same reason I hated 'Killing Eve', which was the very unlikable and narcissistic main character.   Killing Eve and Fleabag are both  by Waller-Bridge.

Will now look for 'Run' at the library. I saw the first episode on cable, and liked it a lot, but then that channel went away. 'Run' is produced by Waller-Bridge, but I don't think she has creative input (thank God, lol).

For Brit crime fans, Vera is really growing on me, and with 10 seasons there is plenty to sink your teeth into.  The scenery is fantastic, reminiscent of Shetland.

Same goes for George Gently, also set in the north east.  A bit like Endeavour, it is set in the 60's and many of the story lines have corresponding themes.  Look for a fresh faced Shaun Evans in the early seasons.

Killing Eve is high style low content. There’s not a lot that happens other than the Russian girl running around killing people. But it’s highly entertaining because she is fabulous in that role.

Fleabag is, to me, a little more serious because it gets into some psychological issues of the main character.

I liked both of them and I like the fact that they have distinctive tone. They are not for everyone.

Another one I’m finding in that groove is The Politician about a high school kid who is from a rich family and who has planned his life to be President of the United States. It is a comedy with some over the top performances. I don’t like it as much as the first two but it is OK.

I really wanted to love Run. I like Phoebe Waller-Bridge stuff, I adore Merritt Weaver. It was entertaining but fell kind of flat.

We are watching the Kominsky Method on Netflix with Michael Douglas as an aging acting professor and Alan Arkin as his best friend and agent. It's very well written, with a great cast. It's darkly and cynically hilarious.

I've been watching the older comedy series "Party Down" by the guy who did Veronica Mars--it's about a catering company staffed by a bunch of Hollywood wanna-bes (and Adam Scott, pre-Parks and Recreation, as a guy who's more or less given up on it). I think every actor who had a part on Veronica Mars has turned up somehow. The humor is pretty dark and very adult, but it's a nice change of pace.

Just started watching Schitt's Creek on Netflix. Very cute comedy about a very filthy  rich family evicted from their mega mansion by IRS for failure to pay taxes and forced to live in a hick town the father bought as a joke for his son's birthday. They check into a grungy motel in Schitt's Creek that is totally horrifying to their champagne tastes. They have little clue how to deal with common folk. Son, who I think they said was 34 years old is told by his father to 'get a job' after buying some expensive under eye cream from Europe. He talks to the desk clerk about how to find a job. She opens the newspaper and finds him a job to apply for as a 'bag boy' at a grocery store. He says "how much would that pay" and she says probably minimum wage and he says "that is probably like $45 an hour", she says yes!

Really enjoying Raised by Wolves  on Netflix.

Just finished the movie Prisoners on Hulu.  Scary drama about a kidnapping. Very well done with excellent acting from Hugh Jackman and jake Gyllenhaal

Just started watching Bling Ring on Netflix. So far about millennials who are going on a robbing spree in rich homes in the Los Angeles area.

Love Schitt's Creek.  You're in for a good ride.  It stays consistently excellent for all six seasons.

We had the weirdest experience with this show.  Raves from critics and family and friends, so we started watching. First half of the first season, we actively disliked it, especially David.  But then, some magical acting thing that Dan Levy was doing kept us watching, and soon we found ourselves watching ONLY for David. Within a few more episodes, we LOVED David. By the time we were halfway through the second season, we loved EVERYONE and found the entire show delightful.   Dan Levy is secretly dealing tv crack, apparently.

Just finished the season.  It's OK... definitely feels predictable.  I'll keep watching, but I'd say the series "Mars" is better.

Watching Schitt's Creek on Netflix. Very cute show! Rich family gets scammed by their financial person and gets evicted from their mansion by IRS. The Dad had bought a hick town called Schitt's Creek as a joke for his son's birthday previously and they end up moving there 'temporarily'. They check into a grungy motel and the fun begins! Family is totally out of their element and know nothing about living among working folk. Almost as if they went to another planet! If you need some laughs, this is it!

I always pipe in when this comes up.
I also hated the first several episodes of Fleabag, truly despised it. It eventually grew on me over the first season, but I would not say I particularly liked it, although the supporting character dynamics really grew on me.
Then season 2 was probably my favourite season of television I've ever seen. I've rewatched it a few times.

So who is enjoying The Boys on Amazon?

With it being weekly for the next 4 weeks, people can (gasp!) actually talk about the show relatively spoiler-free, assuming you at least keep up with it each Friday.

Wifey and I binge watched first season of Cobra Kai on Netflix. Certainly meant probably more for kids but definitely has a bit of a "difficulty moving on from the past" vibe to it. We enjoy it. Pretty funny as well.

Me too! The Silent Retreat episode in season 1 (I think it is ep 4) hooked me when I was about to give up. The Claire/Fleabag dynamic really makes the show for me. (and we agree 100% on Season 2).

Personally, I think that the second season started out really slowly.  The 4th episode was the first one that got me excited again about the concept.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a superhero tripping on shrooms as much as the next guy, but that sequence went on way too long.

We really liked season 1, but we’re irritated they’re releasing them weekly, so we’re waiting until all of season 2 is out before we start watching.

In the meantime, we started watching The Umbrella Academy, which I had heard good things about. Went in with pretty low expectations... it is a delight! Funny and intriguing, and great use of music.

I am not familiar with the comics (so any comics readers, no spoilers please) but I'm guessing the writers are gonna try a redemption arc for Deep? I mean, yes he's a predator and a total ass, but we've seen mass murders 'redeemed' before on shows, so you never know. I did feel sorry for him when his 'buddy' got killed in Episode 3. And at least they are trying to explain his assholeishhness. (I'm trying to be subtle for Kris, even though the whole point of weekly drops is to facilitate fandom chats!  :)  )

There were quite a few pretty significant divergences from the comics regarding plot and character development in season 1.  I'm not sure that a comic reader actually could tell you with any reliable accuracy what will happen.  :P

But many will still try! Oh, how they will try! So many Walking Dead comics-reading trolls filling fandom sites and social media sites over what they -hope- will spoil things for tv-only viewers.

I really enjoyed Umbrella Academy season 1, although you have to suspend your disbelief about many quirks.  Season 2 was similarly high quality and made it fun to go back through season 1 again.  There are some interesting details that I didn't understand (like Handler's scar on her chin and the start of ep.10) that make it worthwhile.  As you said, the use of music is really great throughout.  'High production quality', for sure.  It'll probably wear out its welcome in another season or two, but so far so good!

It has been promoted on Netflix and I will watch it if it any good. The promotions seem like it is a little heavy handed.

I’m finishing Mrs. America  right now. Cate Blamchette is  doing a great job. So far I’m not all that impressed with Abba what’s her name playing Shirley Chisholm and she just won an Emmy for it.

My new addiction, the drama Succession, won best drama and TV at the Emmy awards as it should. Jeremy Strong won best actor as he should.

Edited to make sense...

I'll preface my opinion on Ratched to say that I love the striking use of colors, wardrobe, and setting in 1947 California.  The subject matter isn't for everyone and this never would've seen the light of day pre-Netflix.  Sarah Paulson is fantastic.  But it's also dealing with nurses having flashbacks post WWII and psychiatric methods in 1947, so it's not for the squeamish.  It also got panned by critics, but user ratings were better - so I really have no idea if you'll like it!  Also not sure when or if it'll get the second season, so you can always wait.  I didn't watch 'Homecoming' until the second season, and having the full story arc made it much more enjoyable.

Just binge-watched all 6 episodes of "Staged" (ABC iview for Aussies) with David Tennant and Michael Sheen (guest appearances by Samuel L Jackson and Judi Dench). Hilarious. I didn't think I was ready to watch anything made/referring to Lockdown but it is so so good.

Mad Men is exempt from any such cap.

Oh and it's free to watch on the IMBD app, much to my pleasure. When it dropped off Netflix I was super disappointed. My daughter is going to be crushed when Parks and Rec drops off Netflix in a couple of weeks.

Just got done with Schitt's Creek and it was a hidden gem of a show! Right now there are 5 seasons and the 6th season is set to drop on Netflix I think October 2nd. It is the last season for the show as far as I know.

What a great show if you need to get a few laughs. Great acting, lots of good subject matter. Love it! you kind of fall in love with this family!

"My Octopus Teacher" is a very emotional documentary on Netflix about a relationship a diver has to an octopus he befriends in a kelp forest.

Also excellent is "Kiss the Ground" which explains how farmers could sequester carbon into soil and reverse the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Not hidden anymore, which is nice. Just took in a record haul of Emmy awards.

We're starting to get caught up on Series 12 of the "Doctor Who" revival now. We went to a movie theater event back in January for the series premiere, but then COVID-19 happened and we never caught up on the rest of the series. I liked the two part series premiere, but episode 3 was really preachy. I'm hoping it improves. It feels like they are too afraid to let Jodie Whittaker make the Doctor her own, but I hope that changes. I'd like to see the spin she could really put on the character like all the other actors who have played the part.

I just started this season as well, because my sister in law got HBO max and is sharing with us (because she's nice, and she uses our Netflix :)).  I can't decide if I like it either.  I like the characters overall, and it always takes a few episodes to get used to a new actor for the Doctor.  I've felt like the writing and season story arc continuity has been going slowly downhill for a few years, though, so I'm also hoping it improves and doesn't follow that trend :)

The Rosa Parks episode just confused me - like, why is the villain there?  He has literally no backstory that explains what he's doing, and it doesn't make sense. They could have just gone to see Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights movement, and the episode probably would have been just as good.

I love new Who, so I hope it grows on me.

I liked the episode they did about the partition of India and Pakistan, especially since that led to some really interesting character moments for the companion Yazmin Khan. Overall, though, I don't think the scripts are giving the actors much to work with and that's a shame. I think this cast could be really good if they were allowed to spread their wings a bit more.

Yes, saw the awards they got and deservedly so. Such good acting. Loved how horrified these former rich people were to live in a grungy motel. One more season to go, can't wait!

I watched the trailer for octopus teacher and I think that’s gonna be mesmerizing.

Succession is my favorite show in a good while.  Definitely gonna try and work some of that dialogue into my daily use.

In these emotionally trying times...I've gone down the rabbit hole of watching this Youtube channel's makeovers.  The folks are always lovely, there's some comedy, and it's low stress.  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPbPMpLLXu45J_K1mWyXXCQ. I've got the book on order now.

Our library has Hoopla (lending service for movies and TV as well as books and graphic novels). I was poking around and found "American Princess," which I remembered from when it came out in 2019, but never found on streaming. The premise is that a young, wealthy Manhattanite calls off her wedding and runs off to the local Renaissance Festival. It only lasted one season so there are just 10 episodes. I've really been enjoying it--take note, though, this is definitely adult TV. There's a fair amount of explicit sex humor, although you don't actually see much.

If you're in your (mid to late?) 30s, you may enjoy PEN15. I loved the first season.
