I still need to catch up on Sense 8 and Stranger Things...have the second season to watch for both of them. Oh, and Westworld.

I’ve been watching Star Trek the original series on Hulu.  Wow did they ever do a spectacular job cleaning up the image and improving the special effects.  Gives the whole show a more serious and less kitschy feel.  I’m almost through all 29 episodes of season 1 and it’s much better than I remember it.  Dated, sure.  But still with some cool insights into human nature.  In some respects the fact that this show was actually on the air in 1967 is astonishing.

On H&I channel they run the original series at 8pm week nights.  Stands the test of time.

I think I recall George Takei talking about it taking on a lot of gender/race issues that seemed progressive for the time, either directly or metaphorically (with the aliens).

The second series of Sense8 was pretty decent.   The finale "movie" was a sh*tshow.   Terrible plot and bad writing.

Yes, I have to imagine it didn't go over too well with the a lot of America at the time.  But even beyond that, at least in the 1st season I've spotted several Shakespeare references (some very explicit), references to Milton, Hobbes, John Stuart Mill, and others that escape me at the moment.  Clearly the writers of the show were well educated (or self taught).  But there's lots of stuff that's referenced obliquely and you'd only catch it if you've read/experienced it yourself previously.  Good stuff.

On the 2nd season now.  If anything it looks even better than the first.  Plots aren't as strong though (at least not yet, here's hoping it elevates a bit as it goes).

I just watched episode 1 of season 4 of Killjoys. It is just so weird--entertaining, I guess--not in the same class as The Expanse, but an OK way to kill 45 minutes. Since I watched seasons 1,2,and 3, I decided to hang in there for season 4. It is more like watching a comic book than like watching a dramatic story. I liked Dark Matter, too, and it really should have had a chance to finish the story lines. I don't understand why Killjoys was renewed and Dark Matter wasn't. They were both complex, comic book science fiction...I thought on about the same level with each other.

If you want the really good stuff, I'd go with Babylon 5 (gets much better after the first blah season), and some of the better episodes of TNG and DS9. And The Expanse, of course. I liked Enterprise, although you had to suffer through seasons 1 and 2 to get to the much better seasons 3 and 4. That was another show that should not have been cancelled. And as others have posted, Star Trek TOS--I pass over the ergggg episodes and watch the good ones. (Just google something like "What are the best episodes of....? " to get recommendations. )

And Star Gate SG-1, Star Gate Atlantis, and Star Gate Universe are all worth looking for--just for fun entertainment. Universe should never have been cancelled--another series where viewers were unfairly left hanging.

One major milestone was that the series featured the first interracial kiss on network television, at a time when that was Not Okay with their Southern affiliates. Apparently the network instructed them to shoot the scene without the kiss also so they would have the option of weaseling out of it and William Shatner deliberately ruined all the takes so that the only good ones included the kiss.

HBO announced a tv movie of Deadwood. Praise the lord and happy dance!

This has been rumored for a decade. Let us hope they  get on with it and get it filmed and in the can before Ian Mcshane drops dead. Its not that he is ancient, but he is gettig up there in years and he was a hard drinker.

If there is no McShane in the production, might as well forget it.

He's a great actor.  I liked him in Deadwood, and he's fun to watch in American Gods.

It's mostly a story of rape, hidden in the guise of historical fiction.  There's also some sadism and torture porn in there too to round it out.  :P

Watched about 15 minutes of this horrible new show last night on network TV called "castaway" or something like that.

It was a blatant rip-off of "Alone," a really solid show on History Channel.

I dig Alone because:

1) It features mature people, many in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.
2) It features mostly smart, insightful, resourceful people.
3) It doesn't go for flashy moments. The best moments are getting to know these people and seeing firsthand how the isolation affects them. The contestants film themselves.
4) The people are survivalists, but they show deep appreciation and respect for the natural word.

I love Dave and Britt. They seem like very interesting guys, guys I'd love to have a beer with.

Just came across the Australian mini-series "Secret City" on Netflix and liked it quite a bit. It's your standard government conspiracy thriller but it's well-done and interesting to see it executed in an Australian context (the only problem was that all the shadowy agencies have similar acronyms so it was a bit difficult to tell who was menacing whom sometimes). The lead actress is Anna Torv, who I liked a lot in Fringe some years ago.

Speaking of which, for sci-fi enthusiasts, I highly recommend Fringe if you can find it. It's a bit of an X-Files knock-off (FBI agent investigating paranormal activity) but the the cast was really good, especially John Noble as the eccentric scientist Walter Bishop, and the overall series mythology was fairly coherent if a bit shaggy. I don't think it's streaming on any of the big services at the moment but they seem to keep rotating things in and out so I would not be surprised to see it turn up again one of these days--Eureka just came back to Amazon after being unavailable for a couple years.

I finally finished watching all 79 episodes of Star Trek the Original Series on Hulu.  Wow, they did an AMAZING job cleaning that show up.  In my memory I'd only seen a few episodes in crappy resolution on regular TV many years ago.

Turns out the ST ToS was shot on film originally and after the restoration it looks like film - beautiful.  They even went back and re-created all the special effects (like the things that happen in space).  IMO one of the things that let the show down originally was the cheapness of the special effects.  But NOW, the stuff like the outside of the ship, external planets, external space stations, they all look way, way better than the original effects.

On the other hand, the interior sets still look pretty fake, and the "in camera" special effects look the same (ie, phaser fire, the transporter beams, etc).  It is fun to see how retro the future is from the viewpoint of 1967.

All in all it was very worthwhile to go back and watch all 79 episodes.  Some were great, some were average, some were cheesy.  But even the cheesiest episodes had some interesting ideas bandied about.

I watched the first couple episodes of Disenchantment on Netflix last night. I pretty much agree with what the Den of Geek review said: great musical score, some engaging characters, not especially funny, cartoon violence kind of boring, stylish, professional animation and scenes. I might watch some more episodes if I can't find anything better to watch. I don't think it's  for children, btw.

Just found the British mini-series "The Last Post" on Amazon Prime. It's about a group of British army soldiers and their wives posted in Aden in the 1960s, in the last years of British presence. The plots are a mixture of interpersonal drama among the expats and conflict between the British and the Arab guerrillas trying to push them out. It's only six episodes, so it goes quickly. One of the main roles is played by one of my favorite actresses from Call the Midwife (very different character, though!) and a supporting role is played by the actress who played Phryne Fisher on the Miss Fisher mystery series.

And I'm sitting here wondering if all men were this dickish just 60 years ago.

Anyone watch the new Jack Ryan series on amazon? Trying to decide if it’s worth my time

I watched part of the first episode and wasn't that excited. NPR's review described it as "competent" and I thought that seemed accurate. I was a little disappointed, I really like both the actor and the source material. However, I had just finished watching a different series covering similar material so I may have been a little burned out on "conflict in the Middle East" as storyline.

For those who want something completely ridiculous, down to the fashion choices, I have been watching the remake of Dynasty which is now on Hulu. It is the campiest thing I have seen in years, but the cast all seem to be enjoying the heck out of themselves.

I finished the first season yesterday or the day before. It's entertaining, but nothing stellar. They didn't succeed in making me care for the characters all that much, and I don't think they got the introduction of the main character right - I got the feeling they wanted to play up that he appears normal/"analyst" but is actually a badass, but neither one was executed well.

TLDR 7/10

Just finished Altered Carbon on Netflix.  Man it was bad.  Imagine Blade Runner but lit like it was a CBS TV show.  With mediocre acting all around, especially from the lead.  On the other hand, there were some nice set pieces.  And lots of nudity (like full frontal male and female).  Definitely not a kids show.

Overall, a good concept just poorly done.

Alone is definitely one of the best “reality” style TV shows. I’ve watched every season and eagerly await the next.

Mountain Men is another of my favorites. it’s one of the most authentic shows and the characters they follow are the real deal. Very fascinating to watch a lost way of life. Life Below Zero, The Last Alaskans, and Live Free or Die are other great shows for anyone who likes the outdoors / homesteading / survival.

More mainstream, my wife and I love to watch:

Breaking Bad
Ozark
Narcos
Godless
Hell on Wheels
Modern Family
This Is Us
Parenthood

And one of those shows I get sucked into watching is Locked Up Abroad. Intriguing stories.

The British comedy/drama on BritBox, William and Mary, is...well...very funny and very dramatic at the same time. Lots of social issues are addressed subtly and with humor--sometimes you don't know whether to laugh or cry. There is a big romance, and there is a lot of very good music mixed into the plot. William Shawcross, mortician by day, musician by night, widower with kids, is played by Martin Clunes. That is a big reason to watch it right there.  Mary Gilcrest, a midwife and divorced mother, is played by Julie Graham. There is a big entertaining cast of quirky relatives and friends. Three series of six episodes each, so a total of 18 episodes. Recommended, if you like funky, humorous, heartfelt British TV.

I got a free month of the CBS streaming service (will cancel after) and have been liking the law show "The Good Fight" quite a bit. It's based on the earlier show "The Good Wife" and follows one of the supporting characters. I had only watched about a season of the previous show before all the romantic entanglements drove me off, but this one is not at all hard to follow.

After reading all the recommendations on this thread, I watched The Handmaid's Tale.  Wow!  Thank you!

I didn't care for the book, so wasn't driven to watch.  But the show has everything I thought was missing from the book.  And these days it's not as hard to imagine this actually happening.  Sadly.

I just started watching Season 2 of "Jessica Jones" on Netflix and it's really good, dark stuff that touches on some important current societal issues. After that, I'll be moving on to watching Season 2 of "Luke Cage" and then Season 2 of "Iron Fist." Most of the TV I watch is sort of escapist fiction, because I deal with the real world more than enough in my everyday life.

I watched the first episode last night.  Fun concept, pretty well executed.  I'll definately keep watching.  My one pet peeve was that although the show did some great build-up and slow reveal of all the details of what's going on for the first 90% of the episode, all the main characters had to get together to have a big exposition-fest at the end of the episode.  :P

Watched the episode U.S.S. Callister from Black Mirror, on Netflix, after seeing it recommended in a British newspaper. Season 4, if I remember right. Very gripping and I thought clever tie-in with Star Trek in an edge-of-your-seat science-fiction drama. Techno-expert goes bad and traps co-workers in scary Star Trek universe with psycho Captain Kirk.

Yes disturbing but great drama.

We saw one episode of Ozark and it was so depressing that we gave up.

Give it another shot! Its so depressing you'll feel your soul shudder (if you're into that kinda thing)

Yes I also felt the first episode was depressing, mainly the main character, Martin Byrde, seemed awful for putting his family through this.
But the plot got better, and the story and the character development really deepened.

Season 2 had me glued to my chair.

Been watching the latest Ken Burns documentary "The Vietnam War".  You look at the episode count and think "Oh, it's only 10 episodes, that's not that bad".  Then you start watching and realize they are all 80 to 90 minutes long (or longer), so it ends up being over 17 hours.

But it's amazingly good.  Might be the best documentary I've ever seen.  I was born in 1972 so I grew up after this particular storm had passed, but seeing this documentary, its so thorough, so comprehensive, and so on-point, that I can now see how the ripples of this particular event has reverberated through my entire youth.  But I was too young at the time to see or appreciate the tumult.

Just started the second season of "The Crown." I had put it off because of reports that the second season would focus more on Prince Philip, who I found to be unbearably whiny in the first one. The first three episodes focus heavily on the relationship between him and Elizabeth, but the whininess factor decreased quite a bit, and in the middle of the season he becomes more of a background character.

Agreed on this.  I saw this series when it was first broadcast.  I immediately thought I would like to see it again sometime.

How similar in style is it to 'The World At War'?  That's kinda my current bar for what a documentary about war should be.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
