What to do with a package
« on: December 11, 2016, 12:17:16 PM »
I have a really weird situation at home. Yesterday when I went outside to my mailbox, there was a package on my front porch, addressed to my insane neighbors (we share a similar address and mistakes are sometimes made by delivery folks). We're in a lawsuit with them right now, and both parties are instructed to stay away from each other and each other's property, which is fine with me. The package did not come from the post office, FedEx, UPS or anyone else. It has a phone number on the label, which we called. A generic man's voice answered and said, "You've reached [said number]. Leave a message." We are reluctant to leave our private number with a total stranger, esp. anyone associated with these jerks.

The police are well aware of our situation, so we called their office and left a message about the package. No one has called back. We live in a pretty small town with only about 4 cops. I don't even know if this is their concern.

Any thoughts or ideas as to what to do with this package?

Note: I hate these people so much I'd like to set the damn thing on fire and pitch it toward their house.

Bring it to the police station in person. Explain the bare bones of the situation, and why you do not want to have anything to do with this package. Leave it with them and walk away. Case closed.

If the package didn't come by mail/UPS/FedEx, then it was hand delivered. I would be VERY suspicious of it (as anyone that was hand delivering a package to your neighbors should be quite aware of their address).

I definitely would take it to the police station and explain why you're doing so as Kris said, as that not only means you did the right thing, but also covers your ass if it was an attempt to somehow incriminate you (See - they stole our package! They're bad people!!)

Just make sure to get the name of the person you leave the package with, and if possible, fill out some sort of form for turning in lost/found property to prove you didn't keep it.

Thanks! We will take it tomorrow. We would have brought it there yesterday, but nobody seemed to be around. I definitely don't want to be blamed for tampering with anything, even if it's not official mail.

The funny thing is: the correct address was written on the package. Our house is clearly labeled with our address, as is theirs. Whoever dropped it off just couldn't be bothered to check the house numbers.
