This weekend:
Tomb Raider: I liked it better than the Angelina Jolie version, and the lead actress actually did some acting, which was refreshing for an action movie. Unfortunately, whoever was in charge of lighting the tomb sequences was apparently only equipped with a couple of flashlights, because it was very difficult to see what was happening.
Elysium: I loved the director's first movie, so I was rather disappointed with this one, which is about a dystopia where all the poor people are stuck on a depleted Earth while the rich people live on a fancy satellite. The biggest problem was that there was about twenty pounds worth of plot in a five pound bag, including two separate people trying to get to the satellite for life-saving medical treatment, a human smuggler/revolutionary, an evil mercenary, an evil business tycoon, an evil government conspirator, all with separate goals, a couple of coups, a lot of explosions, etc. etc. The world-building didn't make a whole lot of sense either.
Kings of Pastry: As a change of pace, I watched this documentary about a French professional pastry competition. Basically, if you imagine the Great British Baking Show but with Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood as the competitors, you get an idea. It was very good-natured and the pastry/confection being created was really spectacular. Hilariously, one of the judges also appears as a judge on the Netflix show Nailed It!, which is about as far on the other end of the baking spectrum as you can get.
