Unexpected visit from my gorgeous sister, and we were completely on the same page in our chat about family, life, Christmas 2017... always feels great to be understood!

My Christmas chocolate order arrived today.

Now I need chocolate! Yum.

I received the salt grinder I was lusting after... and then my cryptomustachian we-don't-need-no-salt-grinder husband ask me to fill it up right away because he missed having one. Double win!

Isn't it awesome to be this easily content? :)

A friend messaged me a couple of weeks ago about a baby shower she didn't want to attend because it was expensive (the invitation came with a list of big ticket gifts), the couple was being overly demanding and controlling, and she disagreed with her friend's choice to marry this guy.

My friend was basically asking for permission to not go to an event she disagreed with and one that was going to set her back a couple of hundred dollars (between the requisite gift, expected cash donation and cost of her own meal).

Somewhere along the way I've become the one my friends approach when they want permission to ignore societal expectations and political correctness.

I don't encourage them to be rude, but I do remind them that their time and money are precious, finite resources and they get to decide how those resources are expended.

And I think we got to that point by being quiet examples of this lifestyle, by inviting people over for taco night, bartering goods and services, and being open about finances.

My friend ultimately bailed on the baby shower, with a polite excuse, but still sent a generous gift that she shopped very carefully to get maximum value for money.

She messaged me today to show the mum-to-be's Instagram post, photos of the enormous pile of gifts without any expression of thanks. My friend made the right call.

Got asked for a hairdresser recommendation because apparently my hair ''always looks great''.

My husband cuts my hair for me for free at home, and I don't dye it :D :D :D

A coworker gave me a green Christmas elf hat, complete with ears.  It goes quite festively with my red sweater and everyone who's seen it smiles.

My adult son and girlfriend allowed me to pick them up from a Christmas Party at 1:30am instead of taking a cab. Saved them big $$$ and made my day in the process.

The snow is piling up outside and I don't have to go anywhere.  Having coffee with the blueberry bread I made yesterday, building a fire, and prepping for tomorrow's feast.  Perfect.

Yesterday - going for a run in fresh snow with the dog.

Decided to host an impromptu Christmas Eve Eve party for 10, one day in advance (Dec. 22). Had everything on hand except the turkey. DH and I had a mini-adventure trying to find a 10-15 lb. bird (to fit in the fryer) at 9:30 pm. We ventured into several "regular" grocery stores and were shocked, I tell you, shocked at the prices, which was kinda fun in itself.

Day of, I planned on making Westport Cranberry Relish, but at last minute discovered that my still-in-the-box, clearance-purchased grinder attachment was in fact, a grain mill. Hurriedly requested to borrow the correct attachment via NextDoor and got one! This delay meant I had no time to prepare and serve this dish with dinner, as it needs at least eight hours for flavors to meld. Since all ingredients were prepped, I decided to make the relish between dinner and desert. Everyone had fun observing/coaching/cheering on the process.

At the end of the evening, each guest was gifted with a jar of just-made WCR to take home and serve at their respective Christmas Day festivities. This was tucked into to their previously packed goodie bag of homemade toffee, caramel,  jam, candy cane reindeer, etc., all of which was crafted long before I decided to throw the party.

Made my day to pull this off, especially the Westport Cranberry Relish (Google it, every version is remarkably similar), without going out and buying anything but the turkey. BTW, we bought and cooked two, one of which is going to my brother's house today, along with a jar of WC Relish, which should be perfectly ready to eat by this afternoon.

A mustachian feat/feast indeed! Made me stupidly happy to pull this off.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate the day!

Just the fact that it's Christmas! Even though my husband and I already opened our presents for each other earlier, and we both are sick with food poisoning, I still can't help but feel happy inside.

Merry Christmas!

My family had the least stressful Christmas any of us can remember. We kept the gift-exchange aspect to a minimum and just enjoyed each other's company, with a fire in the fireplace. Opened our presents the night before, stockings on actual Christmas over coffee. It used to feel tough to get into the holiday spirit when it was such a big production.

There was a beautiful sunrise this morning.  My cubicle/opening, picture a T intersection, is where the vertical line meets the horizontal line, so I've got a tiny view to the big windows (past only one other row of cubicles), so I got to look back every few minutes to watch the colors change in the sky, over the city.  Heart feels heavy today with Carrie Fisher death & watching Rogue One last night, so I needed this gorgeous sun rise this morning.  :)

Dinner out last night with my BF.  It was a generous mystery shop so we got to order ridiculous amounts of food, had a blast being cackling old ladies and not only was the $120 bill covered, but I made $30 on top of that.

I approve of this thread.

Yesterday it was waking up finally not feeling ill after having some sort of illness most of December.  It's nice to be able to breathe freely and not be dizzy and exhausted.

On Tuesday of this week, my daughter had a big fight with my husband (kids home on holiday with Dad, I have to work).  She was texting me all day, just being generally difficult, but somehow they made up and when I came home, she had scoured the entire kitchen, organized the refrigerator and the pantry - it was beautiful.  Teenagers - just when you want to throw them to the wolves, you realize that maybe you didn't totally screw them up.

We will see what today brings.

Cooking a lot of food for my family made my day:

chickpeas for humus

a double batch of molten lava cake

a loaf of sourdough bread

another batch of batter for sourdough pizza crust tomorrow

apple rings dried in the dehydrator

4 large ziplock bags of turkey broth done in 2 crockpots overnight

beef thawing for shepherd's pie (with leftover mashed potatoes from Christmas dinner)

AND ate up all of our leftovers for dinner tonight

all while waiting impatiently for a part for our broken dishwasher.

Just saw this thread now, but what totally made my day yesterday was ... stepping out of the car at one of my state's coastal National Wildlife Refuges (where we were spending New Year's day birding), hearing what sounded like some beautiful, mellow, solo tuba music (orchestral excerpts) and then seeing that, yes, indeed, some talented person was indeed playing his tuba in the parking lot. Strange and beautiful, although we did joke around about someone having some unusual New Year's resolutions -- "This year I will practice my tuba more ... by the sea!"

Anyway, we left, but wound up coming back to this same spot a couple of hours later. No sooner did we realize that our tuba player had packed it in, than we looked up and saw an elderly man walking (or trying to walk) his cat. Yet another New Year's Resolution? "This year I will walk my cat more ... by the sea!

Happy New Year to all!

There was a dog in my yoga class!
He was a therapy dog in training and was having a hard time finding inner peace.  He growled and chewed on his trainer's arm and rolled around.  Lots of fun.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
