What Are YOUR Knowledge Gaps--And How Will You Fill Them?
« on: March 05, 2018, 08:29:03 PM »
Greetings fellow Mustachians,

Given that this forum is heavily focused on personal finances, I think we can safely say that most of us are very knowledgeable on those kinds of matters. I'm no expert, but I can certainly build a budget, stick to it, and understand what I have to do to meet specific goals that I have set out.

However, I've recently realized that I lack knowledge on some things, some major things, and while I haven't suffered ramifications for this ignorance yet, it's been enough of a wakeup call to get to studying!

Specifically, I know very, very little about car maintenance. I drive a Prius that's had no problems so far and in the past, I've changed out blower motors, cleared engine codes with a bluetooth OBD 2 computer, and other little things like that. However, if you asked me to change the oil on a car, let alone do anything related to the belts, I'd be out of luck!

So that's the knowledge gap I'm focusing on filling right now. What fields, practical or academic, do you lack knowledge in?

Most everything. As needed or wanted with books, videos, and practice.

Bought a bike for $200 last year and am slowly teaching myself bike maintenance as necessary, mostly through youtube videos.

Also teaching myself python and trying to learn new communication skills at work.

Lifelong learning ftw!

The HusbandHalf and I cannot fix computers, or tvs.  I can't remember a tv around here even needing to be fixed, and our son works in the IT dept of a hospital, so he takes care of our computer.

TheHusbandHalf and I are about as different as different can be when it comes to details, but not on the bigger, important things. Between us, one of us can usually fix something, and sometimes, he still amazes me. Example:
I was working for an electrical wholesaler (married, no kids yet) and bought a central vauum. When it was about 36 years old, it died. I didn't know he could do it, but he rebuilt its motor, and now it works like it always did - every other week or so!

We're older now and paying others to do things we used to take care of, and I suspect that will happen more and more.  I know nothing about investing, and him, maybe a little more, so we hired a guy to take care of it for us. I'm sure they have made 10x their fees,  what we could have guessed at.

Same here! If you're completely new to programming, I recommend Zed Shaw's "Learn Python The Hard Way".

I'm also learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Oh Lord. I've done that one, and I did not enjoy it. To be fair though... I didn't have a book.
