What are you listening to?
« on: August 26, 2012, 05:44:05 PM »
Pretty self-explanatory. I'm listening to music pretty much all the time unless I'm riding my bike or walking somewhere, so I'm always interested in new bands/songs, or old ones I may not have listened to yet.

I had these guys on repeat all day at work (get paid double-time for Sundays, woot!)

My John Butler Trio Pandora station gets regular rotation (it's on right now-playing 'better than').

Happy Monday everyone :)

Won a local radio contest to a sound check party and free tickets to The Avett Brothers show.  It was last night and it was amazing!

Awesome! Free tickets are the best tickets!

I just read their biography on Wikipedia. Totally Badass! I like their sound too

The Black Keys are my hometown band; I spent most of the day listening to their earlier stuff

Various sub-genres of metal and similar related stuff that most people think is weird

Awesome! It's a shame that so many people are quick to judge on this sort of music. Metal players seem to have disproportionately good technical and compositional skill, but few people care to listen because it's a little different.

Also, metal is the only genre I can think of that has more sub-genres than electronic music. Which is a lot.

Ha, glad to see an off-topic forum now, figured this would be one of the first topics.

@rugorak - fellow heavy music fan here. Not metal specifically, but I'm big into post-hardcore, hardcore, sludge, (real) screamo, and a very small selection of metalcore. Of your list, Agollach is the only one I am already familiar with. Again thats because I'm not big on most metal.

EDIT:

Removed a bunch of recommendations, easier to just stick in my last.fm page.

Cop-out answer: I'm listening through the links in this thread!

Before that I was listening to Tom Waits, who I think is just incredible. He's got such a range (here's Innocent When You Dream and I Don't Wanna Grow Up, released just a couple years apart, to give you an idea.

Edit: I just thought I'd point out The Heart of Saturday Night album is one of his most accessible for new Tom listeners, and deals mostly with the workweek and leisure. Relevant enough to merit a mention. Especially check out the title track.

I used to stream the Joe Rogan podcast but my new office gets zero cell reception and my work computer has it blocked so I listen to the hodge podge of music that I always forget to update on my phone (another reason why i can't listen to podcasts anymore, i always forget to put them on my device)....So I'm currently listening to Paul Wall - Bangin Screw

August Burns Red - Barbarian

Dance until the end my friend.
Dance until the end my friend, and find joy in every living thing.
In every living thing, every living thing.
Wow.
Optimism is not a choice, it's a belief.

The Click Five - Resign

Sometimes I just feel like a good pop song, you know?

Brand New - Sic Transit Gloria

God dammit this song is great.  Cool music video too (remember those?)

"It used to be the reason I breathed but now it's choking me up" is a creative lyric.

I used to go to Hellfest back in the days. So hardcore will always have a special place in my heart.

Snapcase - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvEM-t6XtrA (Progression Through Unlearning is one the best albums ever in my humble opinion)
Brother's Keeper - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0uHApNaA_k (I will be playing this song on repeat some glorious day when I hit FI)[I also nominate this song for the Mustacian Theme song!]
Turmoil - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZZJUjiOr9U

Lately I have been into much more mellow (or morose) metal. Such as this band:

Silent Stream of Godless Elegy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZZJUjiOr9U

I really enjoy the contrast between the dissonance of the verses with the melody of the chorus*.

Various sub-genres of metal and similar related stuff that most people think is weird
For a small sampling:
Radogost - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQRpm0nUsMY
Haggard - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NbN_UKf6gA
Trollfest - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VRw58QeGr8
Agalloch - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYMaIzFq1Iw
Żywiołak - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1neYaEz6UE
Finntroll - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEzuxkkGyWQ
Primordial - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9OodY9PomM

Holy shit, I never thought I'd find another person who'd even heard of Haggard, much less enjoy them.

Yeah, it's definitely one of their, uh, busier works. It doesn't help that it changes time signatures twice. I dig it, though. You really have to pay attention to know whats going on there.

I just can't connect with 99% of metal. It's mostly because of the technical proficiency and structure. Being good at guitar doesn't impress me. A lot of metal (but not all!) feels like empty/soul-less showboating of guitar skills. Can you write great songs? That's far more impressive than wicked fast riffs.

I admire the skill it takes to play guitar for bands like AAL, but I never can connect with it emotionally for the reasons above. There are certainly exceptions to those statements, but less than a handful do anything for me though. The rest of it just isn't interesting to me at all.

I do however feel a passion and connectedness for thrashy post-hardcore/screamo bands.

I love post-hardcore because it's sloppy, outrageously chaotic, and brings out the inner "punk" in me. Makes me want to thrash around in a dirty basement show.

The best concert I've ever been to for getting sweaty in a pit was a Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying concert in Columbus Ohio... Dragonforce was also there.  It was pretty intense, I thought I was going to die.

Jeez.

I just read through this whole thread, and there were only two names I even recognized, Rammstein and Tool (besides, like, things I know are wrong, like The Devil Wears Prada, which I thought was a movie).  And I haven't listened to stuff like that in a long time.  My wife mellowed out my music tastes.  We listen to a lot of Jack Johnson.

/not much in common musically
//sorry

Also, I find that I'm "into" music way less than most people.  Idk, something doesn't click with me and music the way it seems to with so many who constantly have earbuds in.  I probably only listen to music (purposefully putting it on) every few months or so.

Ditto, except I haven't (purposefully) listened to any music in over a year. I think it's because I like doing one thing at a time, and listening to music by itself just seems like I'm wasting time or is boring. I don't go to concerts, I feel awkward just watching music for some reason. I feel like pretty much everybody I know is different from me there, i.e. enjoys live music.

For folks that never *really* connected with music - I have always wondered if its never going to happen, or if it could happen if you found the right music?

The reason I say that is that the popular music spectrum is filled with so much trash. There might be some obscure music out there that you end up totally loving. No way to know for sure unless you explored a lot more on your own - which is unlikely if you are in that position in the first place.

@Kriegsspiel - I have seen TDWP live twice, KSE once, and Dragonforce once actually.

TDWP I did have some interest in because thats really metalcore, not straight up metal. Far easier for me to enjoy. They are certainly doing good things for the genre.

KSE was on the bill for some other band that I was seeing.

I dont remember how I ended up at a dragonforce show. Seems really out of place for me. Was certainly the most "metal" show i have ever been to.

How often are you guys going to shows? I have done two in the last month, and 6 or 7 more lined up for the next 3 months.

3-4 shows and 3 or so multi-day festivals a year. I do promotional work for the company that puts on the festivals in exchange for tickets, and those tend to hold me over long enough that I'm not tempted to go to smaller shows too often. Also, since we don't have that great of a club scene here in Columbus, it's pretty rare that an artist I actually listen to regularly ever comes to town. That's one of the things I'd like to try and fix once I stop having to spend every waking hour at school.

I donno.  I've heard music that I like just fine.  And some musicals I even enjoy.

But it's just not a must for me to hear it, and even if I like it okay, it's just never spoken to me deeply.  At this point I doubt it ever will, and figure it's just one of those things how people are wired differently.  Some people like art, music, whatever.  Some don't.

I feel a lot of people like music though (and some REALLY like it), especially live, and it's just never clicked with me.

It's been a LONG time since I went to a show.  I think the last concert I went to was A Day To Remember in Berlin.  I haven't been to any since I got back to the US in July.  Almost went to an Elton John concert in Pittsburgh, that would have been awesome, but something came up.  I've been looking to see when someone worth making the trip to Dallas comes around, but nothing yet.

As for what I'm listening to (listened):

The Clarks - Born To Late

I love the lyrics in this song.  And how the guitar tracks the vocal melody at just the right time.

Atreyu - Remembrance Ballad

This is the most... beautiful... metalcore song I've ever heard.  Again, great lyrics.

I get this. I really like music but it doesn't necessarily "Speak" to me.  I like all kinds and when certain songs come on the definitely trigger clear memories and emotion but at the same time I don't have an ipod or a bunch of CDs - I largely listen to the radio, a lot of "music" people don't get it but to me I like variety and not one style - oh yeah and I am too cheap to (1) buy an i-whatever and (2) pay to fill it up.

Interesting that everyone (it seem on quick skimming of the thread) mentions music....I'm currently listening to "Masterpieces of World Literature" lectures by the Teaching Company (checked out of the library and transferred to my ipod). I listen to one 30 minute lecture each way on my bike ride to work. It's great.

I fall somewhere in between the music lovers and those who don't really connect with music. Some music really blow me away, but I don't like to have it playing very often - it clouds my mind, gets stuck in my head and I appreciate silence and non-rhythmic noises like birds and wind. I've always thought it was odd that people have a soundtrack going through their lives (not meaning this critically, just my own perspective). Art lovers don't hang painting in front of their faces all day long. Why is music different? To each his/her own, of course.

Ah, good point.

I've been listening to real estate podcasts lately.

I actually REALLY dislike listening to audiobooks, podcasts, etc.  I can read much faster than they can talk, so it takes much longer to get through, and my comprehension is much lower.  Music I don't mind, I'm just meh on.  Spoken audio I actively dislike.

And with a 5 minute commute, there's just not much time to listen, besides time (at home, or wherever) specifically devoted to do that (because I find if I'm listening to a podcast and reading an article, I tune out the podcast and suddenly realize I didn't hear what was said the last 30 seconds, so I have to single-task it).

Ugh.  But I've been forcing myself to lately for educational purposes.

Also I love your art lover / music lover analogy.  I may steal that.  :)

Dion - Runaround Sue

Damn, with a few mods this would have been an awesome running cadence when I was in the Army.  Perfect rhythm.

Interesting. I've definitely had to hone my concentration as far as spoken audio. You can't really space out, as it's a pain to jump back. But I really like listening to someone interesting speak (not so much the audiobooks, which are just books being read).

I'd envy your 5 minute commute if my own 30 minute commute weren't the best part of my day away from home!

I also get a lot of my news from the radio, especially since I stopped getting the paper newspaper. I'm one of those backwards people who has trouble digesting information on a computer screen.

The analogy is all yours! It occurs to me now that if Google Glass takes off then we may have people looking at art while they are walking down the street...
