Pretty self-explanatory. I'm listening to music pretty much all the time unless I'm riding my bike or walking somewhere, so I'm always interested in new bands/songs, or old ones I may not have listened to yet.
I had these guys on repeat all day at work (get paid double-time for Sundays, woot!)
Rubblebucket (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUCZjie3QVk&feature=related)
Space Capone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ScYuwaylWc)

My John Butler Trio Pandora station gets regular rotation (it's on right now-playing 'better than').
Happy Monday everyone :)

Won a local radio contest to a sound check party and free tickets to The Avett Brothers show. It was last night and it was amazing!
-
Purity Ring (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVcOwVD4V30)
Frank Ocean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR8jkFYTe4c)
The Weeknd (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4npqdBpdzZM)
Hindi Music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZmUOFoCsrw)
Oh, also these guys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO4MbNWDQc8) are going to playing in Columbus in October.

Awesome! Free tickets are the best tickets!

I just read their biography on Wikipedia. Totally Badass! I like their sound too
The Black Keys are my hometown band; I spent most of the day listening to their earlier stuff (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7qWjFP2bTA)

At this moment...
American Cowboy by Jada (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XewbA8Jvjg8)

Various sub-genres of metal and similar related stuff that most people think is weird
For a small sampling:

Haggard - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NbN_UKf6gA
Trollfest - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VRw58QeGr8

Awesome! It's a shame that so many people are quick to judge on this sort of music. Metal players seem to have disproportionately good technical and compositional skill, but few people care to listen because it's a little different.
Also, metal is the only genre I can think of that has more sub-genres than electronic music. Which is a lot.
-
These days I've been mostly listening to a Carlos Montoya pandora station. Various flamenco and latin guitar-based music.
-
I was just listening to some August Burns Red. Another metal fan here.
-
Ha, glad to see an off-topic forum now, figured this would be one of the first topics.
@rugorak - fellow heavy music fan here. Not metal specifically, but I'm big into post-hardcore, hardcore, sludge, (real) screamo, and a very small selection of metalcore. Of your list, Agollach is the only one I am already familiar with. Again thats because I'm not big on most metal.
EDIT:
Removed a bunch of recommendations, easier to just stick in my last.fm page.

Cop-out answer: I'm listening through the links in this thread!
Before that I was listening to Tom Waits, who I think is just incredible. He's got such a range (here's Innocent When You Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6KkJ6-Ecxw) and I Don't Wanna Grow Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo4Y0TxW41g), released just a couple years apart, to give you an idea.
Edit: I just thought I'd point out The Heart of Saturday Night (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Heart_of_Saturday_Night) album is one of his most accessible for new Tom listeners, and deals mostly with the workweek and leisure. Relevant enough to merit a mention. Especially check out the title track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2e5ge9Ksfw).

I used to stream the Joe Rogan podcast but my new office gets zero cell reception and my work computer has it blocked so I listen to the hodge podge of music that I always forget to update on my phone (another reason why i can't listen to podcasts anymore, i always forget to put them on my device)....So I'm currently listening to Paul Wall - Bangin Screw
-
August Burns Red - Barbarian (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY7t8OoioGc)
Dance until the end my friend.
Dance until the end my friend, and find joy in every living thing.
In every living thing, every living thing.
Wow.
Optimism is not a choice, it's a belief.
The Click Five - Resign (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0p0RQ-XC00)
Sometimes I just feel like a good pop song, you know?
Brand New - Sic Transit Gloria (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zywmIuhllXE)
God dammit this song is great. Cool music video too (remember those?)
"It used to be the reason I breathed but now it's choking me up" is a creative lyric.
-
Holy shit, this is like Dream Theater, if they were awesome (http://pomegranatetiger.bandcamp.com/)
-
By the way, if you don't know what shredding a guitar is, this is it. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edqH0ofRQrM). BTW, that's a Chapman Stick that Tony Levin is playing.

I used to go to Hellfest back in the days. So hardcore will always have a special place in my heart.
Snapcase - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvEM-t6XtrA (Progression Through Unlearning is one the best albums ever in my humble opinion)
Brother's Keeper - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0uHApNaA_k (I will be playing this song on repeat some glorious day when I hit FI)[I also nominate this song for the Mustacian Theme song!]
Turmoil - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZZJUjiOr9U
Lately I have been into much more mellow (or morose) metal. Such as this band:
Silent Stream of Godless Elegy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZZJUjiOr9U
-
Dismemberment Plan - What Do You Want Me To Say (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ge5BoOOhCo)
I really enjoy the contrast between the dissonance of the verses with the melody of the chorus*.
*The most musically nerdy sentence in this thread? Probably.
-
It was an interesting day. Went from Die Krupps to Skinny Puppy to Rammstein and ended up with some MD.45. :-)
-
Sonne, by Rammstein, is one of the best intros ever. That guitar riff is just so brutal.

If anybody is on last.fm, feel free to add me (or stalk my music listening habits). http://www.last.fm/user/CarlFarbman

Yeah, it's definitely one of their, uh, busier works. It doesn't help that it changes time signatures twice. I dig it, though. You really have to pay attention to know whats going on there.

Added you. Hilarious though, our musical compatibility ranks as very low:
Your musical compatibility with rugorak is Very Low
Music you have in common includes Tool, Coheed and Cambria, Modest Mouse and Rise Against.
Its amazing how separated the worlds of Metal vs Hardcore are.

Metal is a pretty diverse genre, undoubtedly. I was crushing some As I Lay Dying during my workout today.

I just can't connect with 99% of metal. It's mostly because of the technical proficiency and structure. Being good at guitar doesn't impress me. A lot of metal (but not all!) feels like empty/soul-less showboating of guitar skills. Can you write great songs? That's far more impressive than wicked fast riffs.
I admire the skill it takes to play guitar for bands like AAL, but I never can connect with it emotionally for the reasons above. There are certainly exceptions to those statements, but less than a handful do anything for me though. The rest of it just isn't interesting to me at all.
I do however feel a passion and connectedness for thrashy post-hardcore/screamo bands.
I love post-hardcore because it's sloppy, outrageously chaotic, and brings out the inner "punk" in me. Makes me want to thrash around in a dirty basement show.

The best concert I've ever been to for getting sweaty in a pit was a Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying concert in Columbus Ohio... Dragonforce was also there. It was pretty intense, I thought I was going to die.
-
Hey, I'm in Columbus, Ohio. What venue was the show in?
-
As I Lay Dying and The Devil Wears Prada are playing here again sometime in the next week or so. I was really trying to convince myself not to go and this isn't helping.
-
Jeez.
I just read through this whole thread, and there were only two names I even recognized, Rammstein and Tool (besides, like, things I know are wrong, like The Devil Wears Prada, which I thought was a movie). And I haven't listened to stuff like that in a long time. My wife mellowed out my music tastes. We listen to a lot of Jack Johnson.
/not much in common musically
//sorry
Also, I find that I'm "into" music way less than most people. Idk, something doesn't click with me and music the way it seems to with so many who constantly have earbuds in. I probably only listen to music (purposefully putting it on) every few months or so.

Ditto, except I haven't (purposefully) listened to any music in over a year. I think it's because I like doing one thing at a time, and listening to music by itself just seems like I'm wasting time or is boring. I don't go to concerts, I feel awkward just watching music for some reason. I feel like pretty much everybody I know is different from me there, i.e. enjoys live music.

Good lord that sounds awesome!
And grant, I can't remember the name of the place we were at... It was an old theater (like, play/opera theater). It was about 7 years ago.

For folks that never *really* connected with music - I have always wondered if its never going to happen, or if it could happen if you found the right music?
The reason I say that is that the popular music spectrum is filled with so much trash. There might be some obscure music out there that you end up totally loving. No way to know for sure unless you explored a lot more on your own - which is unlikely if you are in that position in the first place.
-
@Kriegsspiel - I have seen TDWP live twice, KSE once, and Dragonforce once actually.
TDWP I did have some interest in because thats really metalcore, not straight up metal. Far easier for me to enjoy. They are certainly doing good things for the genre.
KSE was on the bill for some other band that I was seeing.
I dont remember how I ended up at a dragonforce show. Seems really out of place for me. Was certainly the most "metal" show i have ever been to.
How often are you guys going to shows? I have done two in the last month, and 6 or 7 more lined up for the next 3 months.
-

3-4 shows and 3 or so multi-day festivals a year. I do promotional work for the company that puts on the festivals in exchange for tickets, and those tend to hold me over long enough that I'm not tempted to go to smaller shows too often. Also, since we don't have that great of a club scene here in Columbus, it's pretty rare that an artist I actually listen to regularly ever comes to town. That's one of the things I'd like to try and fix once I stop having to spend every waking hour at school.

I donno. I've heard music that I like just fine. And some musicals I even enjoy.
But it's just not a must for me to hear it, and even if I like it okay, it's just never spoken to me deeply. At this point I doubt it ever will, and figure it's just one of those things how people are wired differently. Some people like art, music, whatever. Some don't.
I feel a lot of people like music though (and some REALLY like it), especially live, and it's just never clicked with me.
-
It's been a LONG time since I went to a show. I think the last concert I went to was A Day To Remember in Berlin. I haven't been to any since I got back to the US in July. Almost went to an Elton John concert in Pittsburgh, that would have been awesome, but something came up. I've been looking to see when someone worth making the trip to Dallas comes around, but nothing yet.
-
As for what I'm listening to (listened):
The Clarks - Born To Late (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1mk9JQP1E0)
I love the lyrics in this song. And how the guitar tracks the vocal melody at just the right time.
Atreyu - Remembrance Ballad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJI10VQI1ys)
This is the most... beautiful... metalcore song I've ever heard. Again, great lyrics.

I get this. I really like music but it doesn't necessarily "Speak" to me. I like all kinds and when certain songs come on the definitely trigger clear memories and emotion but at the same time I don't have an ipod or a bunch of CDs - I largely listen to the radio, a lot of "music" people don't get it but to me I like variety and not one style - oh yeah and I am too cheap to (1) buy an i-whatever and (2) pay to fill it up.
-
Interesting that everyone (it seem on quick skimming of the thread) mentions music....I'm currently listening to "Masterpieces of World Literature" lectures by the Teaching Company (checked out of the library and transferred to my ipod). I listen to one 30 minute lecture each way on my bike ride to work. It's great.
I fall somewhere in between the music lovers and those who don't really connect with music. Some music really blow me away, but I don't like to have it playing very often - it clouds my mind, gets stuck in my head and I appreciate silence and non-rhythmic noises like birds and wind. I've always thought it was odd that people have a soundtrack going through their lives (not meaning this critically, just my own perspective). Art lovers don't hang painting in front of their faces all day long. Why is music different? To each his/her own, of course.

Ah, good point.
I've been listening to real estate podcasts lately.
I actually REALLY dislike listening to audiobooks, podcasts, etc. I can read much faster than they can talk, so it takes much longer to get through, and my comprehension is much lower. Music I don't mind, I'm just meh on. Spoken audio I actively dislike.
And with a 5 minute commute, there's just not much time to listen, besides time (at home, or wherever) specifically devoted to do that (because I find if I'm listening to a podcast and reading an article, I tune out the podcast and suddenly realize I didn't hear what was said the last 30 seconds, so I have to single-task it).
Ugh. But I've been forcing myself to lately for educational purposes.
Also I love your art lover / music lover analogy. I may steal that. :)

Dion - Runaround Sue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awc2iZURXc4)
Damn, with a few mods this would have been an awesome running cadence when I was in the Army. Perfect rhythm.

Interesting. I've definitely had to hone my concentration as far as spoken audio. You can't really space out, as it's a pain to jump back. But I really like listening to someone interesting speak (not so much the audiobooks, which are just books being read).
I'd envy your 5 minute commute if my own 30 minute commute weren't the best part of my day away from home!
I also get a lot of my news from the radio, especially since I stopped getting the paper newspaper. I'm one of those backwards people who has trouble digesting information on a computer screen.
Also I love your art lover / music lover analogy. I may steal that. :)
The analogy is all yours! It occurs to me now that if Google Glass takes off then we may have people looking at art while they are walking down the street...

Well, they'll be looking at something like that, but let's not get into the "is pornography art?" debate. ;)
(Or I just have a lot lower opinion of the average person than you do, when you think they'll be looking at art, and I laugh.)

Ha! I had a similar thought, as I typed that, but decided to give theoretical art lovers the benefit of the doubt. I agree though, that this kind of technology generally takes things to the lowest level. Most people won't be looking at the Mona Lisa or paintings of peaches on tables :)

Great stuff.

NIN "Head Like A Hole" mashed with "Call Me Maybe" (http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/4/4064574/nins-head-like-a-hole-mashed-with-call-me-maybe-is-perfect)
Beautiful.
-
KMFDM - I Heart You Not (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiNBNyItHyk)
Kind of a dark 80s vibe with the synth, I liked it.
Halestorm - Love Bites (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmkHqUwa4zg)
I really like the vocal tremelo in the chorus.
-
Motion City Soundtrack - This is For Real (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAO8jKMm8Wc)
Maybe I'm just in a synth mood today.
NOFX - Champs Elysees (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f381G0k9Inc)
Maybe the most beautiful punk song? Is it just because it's in French?
-
My Chemical Romance - Helena (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSNKCfxcYvE)
-
Right at this moment? The Heist by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
Some artists in earlier rotations include They Might Be Giants, Richard Thompson, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Why yes, I do have varied musical tastes.
-
@Mary, In Pittsburgh? I've just started to enjoy this local (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_XmUzgEmXM), even though she can get way too spiritual for me at times the song's are awesome.
-
Hah that was pretty cool.
Another great Pittsburgh band: The Clarks - Born Too Late (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dtbBoXq8Lk).
-
My Chemical Romance - Black Parade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q9q6zl3WIs)
The fill that kicks it off at 1:46 and lead in the chorus just sound so damn good. The guitar vamping is perfect, with the bit of 5th-4th-root (I think, not having a guitar to figure it out, that's what they sound like) harmonics, like at 2:07, 2:46..... beautiful.
-
Atreyu - Remembrance Ballad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJI10VQI1ys)
This is the most... beautiful... metalcore song I've ever heard. Again, great lyrics.
String Quartet's classical version of Bite To Break Skin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeMN9e8QTSY)
Holy shit, this is great. Somehow, a kickass song that I lift weights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTNVQf5EXjc) to really lends itself to a lighter treatment without sounding horrifically forced.
Another great classically redone song is Remembrance Ballad.
-
Paramore - Rewind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYx5P8Vf6Lc)
Queen - Don't Stop Me Now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDMjgckNlz0)
Because it's goddamn Queen.

Kriegsspiel you have good taste. And all over the place. I like it. Reminds me of the radio show I did in college. We would jump all over the place. Rap, to classical, to heavy metal, to some Johnny Cash.
-
Well thank you. I'll bet I would have liked your radio show.
Today at work I listened to a couple songs over and over again in the afternoon.
Coolio - Gangster's Paradise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpGbzYlnz7c) (which was the first thing that popped up after I typed in 'coo' on youtube.... wow)
One of my favorite rap songs of all time.
Brand New - The Quiet Thing That No One Ever Knows (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgtkPKZ2OPk)
One of the best lead guitar lines of all time, IMO.
-
A lot of people did. Unfortunately the upper classmen didn't like some freshmen getting what turned out to be a primo timeslot (10pm to midnight Sunday nights) so we get relegated to 10am Sundays the following year.
I'm feeling nostalgic tonight so got some Nirvana playing.
Smells like teen spirit - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYxkezUr8MQ
I am including the lyrics video because I realize this may have set me on the path to find things like MMM and the like. The lyrics are so random yet so perfectly capture the disillusionment that so many of us have with the life everyone else is leading and we are expected to live. The excess of the 80's, and the excess of today. I didn't want to be one of those mindless teens they are describing and I don't want to be a mindless consumer today. I guess I am just feeling nostalgic and introspective this evening :)

Primus - Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5e922K8R_Q)
Primus sucks!

i listen to books on tape, music annoys me. in the car i actually prefer it quiet, and at home there is usually so much going on (talking about our days) that music seems to get in the way and i have to shout over it.
my partner loves music though, huge rob zombie fan, abandon all ships, and stuff like that. some of our only arguments are how loud the radio has to be turned up in his car.
some of the only music i do like is old elvis presley stuff, it reminds me of my grandmother
-
music annoys me.
You and I have wildly different perspectives/priorities. I don't think we would get along very well, LOL.

Lol! probably not, but you never know!

How about some Volbeat?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mV_HHL-h6g
I'd describe it as what you would get if Elvis and Johnny Cash got together and decided to play metal.
-
Volbeat (http://www.smogon.com/bw/pokemon/volbeat)'s only use is to Baton Pass Tail Glow IMO.
But seriously -- what an unfortunate name for a metal group.
-
Volbeat is confusing my metalhead, but I think I like it.

Since there's a few people from Ohio in this thread. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7SuBBpLX-A)

Nice. On that note, there's Banks of the Ohio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmwLUhejboo) and Ohio (Come back to Texas) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45DFVyriVI0).

Six Pence None The Richer - Kiss Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N-qO3sPMjc)
Just a great song.
Pearl Jam - Do The Evolution (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDaOgu2CQtI)
Another one of the most artistic music videos. It's disturbing in the same way that Watership Down was disturbing.
-
Only about 2 people on this whole forum might care, as this is related to heavy angry music...
Went to an excellent show on Sunday night. Got to see La Luna (http://lalunaband.bandcamp.com/track/the-fools-card) and Lord Snow (http://music.lordsnow.net/track/alas-the-world-stops-spinning). Both are excellent female fronted hardcore/punk bands. These ladies have a ferocious energy that blows you away - especially seeing them in a tiny punk venue. Albums from both bands are free on their bandcamp pages.

Love this song! Love PJ! Even 20 years later!

Fuel - Shimmer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZFptFV5x4I)
This is a good song. It's from before the masses learned about Fuel from Hemorrhage, which was awful, IMO.
Basshunter - All I Ever Wanted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3CxhBIrBho)
This is techno, for all the clubrats.
-
the new daft punk album, streaming in its entirety on itunes. really digging it.
also finding it hilarious that they collaborated with paul williams (of "just an old fashioned love song" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Qjtj9lliXU) fame), and sandwiched his song between two featuring pharrell williams. nice, robots, nice.

new vampire weekend.

In case you haven't seen/heard it... Pachelbel's Canon in D by Funtwo... gods he's good (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF6cnLnEARo)

that was the song I walked down the aisle to at my wedding. Ive always loved it.

While I like all sorts of different music genres, I like putting on classical in the background when I'm physically at my work cube. Here are a few I've listened to lately:
Rimsky-Korsakov-Scheherazade
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQNymNaTr-Y
Beethoven-7th Symphony (featured a lot in The King's Speech)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MqrBauptrE
Smetana - Ma Vlast
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdtLuyWuPDs
Liszt - Transcendental Etudes performed by Berezovsky
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=picvN4UL_QQ
I think the animated scores are cool, too. Here is an example:
Beethoven's 9th - 2nd movement
http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=p5favl2Qtx0&feature=endscreen
-
The Mountain Goats -Transcendental Youth
Frightened Rabbit- Pedestrian Verse
Titus Andronicus- Local Business
-
Shania Twain's Ka-Ching, ten years old, but a truly mustachian song....
-
Nural - Tension (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUxU4H7iR-U)
Slipknot - People Equal Shit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFJIBtqunHY)
Time to get swole.
-
I like Girl Talk because I have music ADD. Free for download - high BPM which is great for exercise.
Old school rap - the new stuff is just not the same. Outkast, Tribe.
Lately like Alt-J - my younger brother-in-law got us addicted - I like Fitzpleasure and Breezeblocks.
Also like Florence and the Machine, the XX, Fiona Apple.
Anyone have any other similar type recs for music that I can seek out.
-

Sometimes AlunaGeorge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7FszLmoaUo) reminds me of the XX.

I can't listen to books on tape when I am driving, they are too slow and they distract me. I will listen to podcasts on the computer when I am doing something mindless at home - it helps make filing paperwork less horrible. In the car it is music or nothing - what I have playing depends on mood and energy levels. What is in the CD player now - Best of Bryan Adams (I was feeling reminiscent). Last one - Skyscraper Soul (Jim Cuddy) - I especially like "Everyone watched the wedding", that has heart. Before that - Beolach. (And I have tickets for Leahy in Ottawa in December). Before that a Blue Rodeo CD, forget which one.
I liked harder rock and metal way back when, but after a while it gets old, it's all show and not much heart - although Steppenwolf never gets old, just gets drivers speeding tickets.
I may never end up stopping my Expressvu, I use it more now for all the music channels than the actual TV shows. Anyone have a recommendation for a Pandora/Last free equivalent for Canada?
-
Whoever mentioned Vampire Weekend. Yes, oh yes....
-
Becoming The Archetype - The Epigone. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSJViLG6OJQ)
They have cool album art.
Trivium - Master of Puppets orig. Metallica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFfpOGq-Cmc)
-
We Came As Romans - Cast The First Stone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCIEUIq1bcM)
Also cool art work.

Unless we have some Polish Mustachians here I doubt anyone will have heard of Kabanos (the band not the sausage). But I am obsessed with them right now.
KABANOS - Buraki - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skPjiSzR9n4
KABANOS - Baba i dziad - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxhcomD70Nk
KABANOS - Czerwona Musztarda - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6-t76e1kXc
KABANOS - Czołg - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woiXANaog0U
Currently working on German but Polish is what I am planning on studying after I get that down. Probably a few years at the rate I am going on German though.

I have literally had this song stuck in my head for weeks now since I first saw the episode Topsy on Bob's Burgers (http://www.avclub.com/articles/topsy,93221/). Then I found out recently that the Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt did a cover of the song which is equally awesome in its own unique way.
For your science nerd and quirky music edification, I present both versions of Electric Love (http://video.vulture.com/list/search%3Aelectric%20love/video/Vulture-Exclusive-Bobs-Burger-2).

A song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQL1Ls3WfME) about the joys of vandwelling, at least that's how I'm choosing to interpret it.

As I Lay Dying - Confined (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBySUqE7vTk)

Oh, and grant, I saw them at the Newport.

There's a totally sweet show (http://www.promowestlive.com/index_columbus.php?venue=new) there on the 28th with Say Anything (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1MUVAiK1Eg).
And on 20 July with The Used (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2C36O0Yxoc).

In case you haven't been holy shit on today, here's Bohemian Rhapsody on a ukelele (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB3RbO7updc). As a bass player in a prior life, I respect the four strings.

If you like alt-j, you might like Foals. They are an indie/math-rock band from the UK, occasionally has some electronic elements to it.
Song from their latest record, closer to alt-J:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ_PMvjmC6M
Older stuff is more mathy, but fantastic. Super fun live:

What the fuck is going on in the world where people are doing amazing things with ukeleles?
6 guys playing Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BluOKxCvb1I)... on one ukelele.

Blues Traveler - Run Around (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ousaiByU1ko)
This song gets inside my dome and doesn't get out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irLsjBDPe5c (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irLsjBDPe5c)
You haven't heard Bohemian Rhapsody until you've seen four Finnish guys play it while squeezed into a little car.

Moon Hooch- Milk and Waffles

Mae - Suspension (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sCRIOQRGO4)
One of my favorite songs of all time.

If I can't decide from my own music collection I listen to Jelli Radio online http://radio.jelli.com (http://radio.jelli.com). They broadcast on FM in some US cities aswell. Pretty much my taste in music with Pearl Jam, Sublime, Muse, 311, Metallica, RATM, Bad Religion, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age etc.. A perfect mixture of fun songs, grunge and metal. I loooove my Jelli!
-
I was browsing through some upcoming acts at local venues when I came across Craig Cardiff (http://craigcardiff.bandcamp.com/). Had a $25 gift card I received at Christmas sitting on iTunes so I went ahead and bought a couple albums.

Pandora.
I pay the $5 (or so ? ) for ad free.
Some of my stations are highly tuned via historic likes and dislikes.... and that's fantastic. I can control the general style and sound, but as a result, Pandora' s algorithms often find me a new artist I like.
-
Last.fm is ad free for free. If you pay for it you get the apps for the computer/phone. Otherwise just use the web page and occasionally have to click resume.
And today it is Psychostick
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsnnFhNAij0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPNkLGl5hGU
Unless you are easily offended I don't know how you can't love them. I mean they made a hardcore version of the ABC song.

Pomegranate Tiger - New Breed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSD1Yn97XeA)

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - Man on fire (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08WeoqWilRQ")
An episode of Parenthood made me discover this one.
Manages to make me smile and give me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Anyone know any similar songs? I'm not really an indie / folk expert..
-
Incubus - A Certain Shade Of Green (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGzjtKmk9H0)
One of the best opening guitar riffs ever.
Head Automatica - Beating Heart Baby (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jML0QDbVHCY)
Excellence in vocals.
Paramore - Rewind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcyfPhnjQEA)
One of Paramore's best songs. The drumming is excellent, IMO.
Styles of Beyond - Nine Thou (Superstars Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NFebA3sTcg)
This is what I would consider near-perfect guitar + drums for a rap song.
From First To Last - Such A Tragedy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLXAlVlBIcs)
This song makes me want to punch tigers in the face and deadlift infinity, thus breaking the universe. This is also Skrillex's old band, for all you dubstep hipsters.
Roses Are Red - White And Gold (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcVFDmtsoWQ)
From the most confusing "is that the band's name, is that the song's name" comes a damn good tune.
-
Mr. Mister - Kyrie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNKbHJ3PTu4)
Holy fucking shit, does the 80s get any better?

WHAT?! MORE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER MADE?! WHO IS THIS BEARDED GENTLEMAN!???!??!!!ONE
The Cult - She Sells Sancuary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I8mWG6HlmU)
Bam, it's fucking great.
Eric Carmen - Make Me Lose Control (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zajTU5h_YGM)
Eric Carmen, maybe the greatest songwriter of the 1980s.
Kenny Loggins - Playing With The Boys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABavfazPTjo)
WHAT?! YOU HAVEN'T SEEN TOP GUN?! KILL YOURSELF! BUT FIRST, SEE IT, THEN BOW DOWN BEFORE KENNY LOGGINS!
Nena - 99 Luftballoons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIGbxKjq7Q4)
This is that song that the average Joe likes because of that goddamn awesome funky beat. Everyone who translates it realizes it is simultaneously glorifies and realizes how war is the destroyer.
-
Mr. Big - To Be With You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWsVAGCeITA)
What? Possibly the greatest song of the 80s. I mean, TRY not to sing along with it.
-
Underoath - A Boy Brushed Red... Living In Black And White (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Xgxeal328)
Yea, maybe I dig their cover art a little... Gas masks for the win.

Audio Karate - Nintendo 89 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jk9cm3RTmpw)

Ahh, fucking great.
-
Brand New - Guernica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGPaPBEpw0w)
Between Guernica, TQTTNEK, and Sic Transit Gloria, I think you have some of the best songs of this genre.
Becoming The Archetype - Terminate Damnation]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcNnnT48ds8]Becoming The Archetype - Terminate Damnation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcNnnT48ds8)

The Agony Scene- The Darkest Red (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aV0OI4qyDVE)
Luckily I listened to this song before working out.
Someone else has heard of the Agony Scene?! Mike is an old friend of ours.
These days I basically listen to the Descendents (don't know how to link, but Milo Goes to College and Everything Sucks are my two favorites) or Queen (Greatest Hits, with "Don't Stop me Now" being my favorite song. It is so damn sassy). Sometimes Alkaline Trio or the Beatles, as they're my daughter's favorite bands.
Going to Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin in November. Television is playing!

I just can't get enough Neko Case lately. I've been a fan for years but the release of a new album last month renewed my desire to listen to all her albums again. Like non-stop, like I'm driving my husband crazy, like my three-year-old can sing along to many of her songs. I'm a nut. But she's great!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhnFl3Y2FVI That's from the new album.
Here's a gem from some years back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qclxx4uO0ac

Woo-hoo! Enjoy! Her older stuff is more twangy, almost alt-country maybe? Sometimes she sounds kind of like Patsy Cline. But her last three albums I'd say don't really have that country-ish sound. I can't decide which album is my favorite, but I do prefer the more recent/less country-ish ones. Her voice is fantastic no matter what style she sings in. She also sang on some albums with The New Pornographers. Their sound is more pop-rock. You can have Neko any way you want her I guess! ;)

Been a bit all over the place in terms of my musical habits this week. Some highlights:
Baroness - Yellow & Green
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks
De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising
Tool - Lateralus
David Bowie - The Next Day
And I've been trying to get through Oneohtrix Point Never's album on a friend's recommendation, but I just can't connect with it.

That's pretty cool! Yea I have been listening to them since I was in college; especially for lifting weights, they are the shiznittlesnap.

Now listening to the Chvrches album. Gave it a couple of listens so far. Think I'm in love.

I'm a big fan of Google Music. It's $8.99 a month, I can upload up to 25k of my own songs and listen to everything they have. No ads, no skip-restraints, and I can download it to my phone and listen to it offline. With a $35 Chromecast I send it to my TV and listen to it while I putz around the house.
One of the best features they have is the "radio" stations they set up based on your listening history. Like Pandora, but so far it seems to make better guesses as to what I like.
Anyway, I've been rocking out to some of that new hipster stuff. U.S. Royalty (absolutely fantastic), California Wives, We Barbarians. Also on a '60s/'70s classic rock kick.

Balance and Composure (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUbyJNMRWUk).
Touché Amoré (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ5yfreafAw)
I did not care for the Balance and Composure, I liked the Touche Amore better. The vocals reminded me of Botch. The drumming style and mixing would preclude me from looking for more from them.
-
The Virgins - Rich Girls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKLuSZifDKg)
slightly less upbeat:
Van She - Sex City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOKrAWok7Yk)
not upbeat at all:
Death Grips - Guillotine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Orlbo9WkZ2E)
-
Travis Barker's version of Soulja Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlTeNzSGFFw)
Shiny Toy Guns - Major Tom (orig. Peter Schilling) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGultrg7l0I)
Travis Barker's version is a massive improvement over the original, IMO. I really like both versions of Major Tom though.

No worries, at least you like Botch. Thats major bonus points in my book. A lot of the stuff I listen to is heavier (like botch).

Have you heard Le Castle Vania's remix of Rich Girls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPHlhXuSjDg)? Dope. Van She is great as well.
Now that I've got electro and french house on my mind, here are a couple of my favorites from a few years back.
Plastiscines - Barcelona (Lifelike Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBRsVGt_GQ0).
Digitalism - Pogo (Shinichi Osawa Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baDncBFyCDU).
Cut Copy - Lights and Music (Moulinex Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7I6_46SDEo).

I've got an instant mix based on The Eagles' cover of "Seven Bridges Road". Not too shabby.

MOAR!
What are you looking for? More of the electro/house stuff?
-
Yes please.
That Le Castle Vania was the shizznittlesnap.
-
Low - Nothing But Heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7Aob1JP3Ss)
So, so, so good. Give it some time.

Yes please.
That Le Castle Vania was the shizznittlesnap.
Unfortunately, I have don't have any other tunes that sound too similar to that particular Le Castle Vania remix, in terms of the super funky upbeat stuff (or those vocals). Russ might know some other recs there...
Here are some tunes similar to the other ones I posted, since you might enjoy these anyway:
Rogues - Not So Pretty (Feed Me Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADwgZdbpwmE)
Van She - Changes (Gloves Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4_MuI68Ioo)
Anoraak - Nightdrive with you (Grum Remix)] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YsZzxEqJno)
Alex Metric - It Starts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90scqXuhPrw)

MOAR!
I haven't come across many electro remixes that are both funky and not chopped to hell and back as was the style a few years ago. Here's a few though.
Cut Copy - Far Away (Bag Raiders Remix) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPT5mNCSQeY)
Van She - Idea of Happiness (SebastiAn Remix) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wAnXy7nitY)
Metric - Help I'm Alive (The Twelves Remix) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yhx0vEecE5o)

chopped to hell and back
I love the really chopped/glitched tunes. As long as its well done of course. Bad glitch is pretty awkward sounding.
-
While reading these posts I was working my way through my iPod backwards:
ZZ Ward and ZZ Top...

This popped up in my playlist and I am singing along.
Die Toten Hosen - Nur zu Besuch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOzMWu0awMY)

Oh I like em too, just didn't think that was what I was supposed to be looking for.

Still stuck on Neko Case over here, but I have made room for Luscious Jackson's new album, first new album for them as a band in 14 years! It's called Magic Hour and it's great. They also released a kids' album called Baby DJ which my kids LOVE and my husband and I even like too. So glad to have them back together and back on the scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEoTPsU1Q6g
-
Damning Well - Awakening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXt1DIp_hjw)
The first 40 seconds or so of this song are, IMO, almost perfect for a sporting event "coming out of the tunnel" song. I had suggested playing this song when some guys from my ROTC got to free-rappel in game balls, from the rafters above the court, for a basketball game. They didn't play it (or crack some chem-lights, wave them dramatically, then drop them to the hardwood... the bastards), but it would have been super.
Agony Scene - My Dark Desire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_WaLKJb0qA)
Norma Jean - Vertebraille (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPALTYQM57A)

I'm a huge rock music fan, so currently I'm listening to a really hot new band out of Las Vegas called Otherwise. I'm also a big fan of a band from Pennsylvania called Halestorm who just won the Grammy award for best hard rock song. Another new band I'm currently listening to is a band from Seattle called Girl On Fire. Most of the new bands I listen to are signed to Century Media records, which seems to be the best independent rock label at the moment.

I don't know who this Dennis is, but if he has excellent taste in music then yeah I am that
He's a character on It's Always Sunny who's really into "all that early 80s glam rock fem shit" so I think he'd really appreciate some of this whatnot you're linking to.

Shouldn't the title of this thread be "To what are you listening?" ?
No, there's nothing wrong with ending a sentence with an adverb and there never has been. "To what are you listening" is a cumbersome construction that's not more clear and not even more right.

pretty much have had the album White Lighter by Typhoon stuck in my head lately...

A bloody fantastic playlist that my friend gave me off her terabyte (so FREE). It's an eclectic mix of Cat Stevens, Lorde, Queen, Beyonce, Arctic Monkeys, The Naked and Famous, Mumford & Sons, Lana Del Ray and Michael Jackson etc. It's weird and wonderful and when you look at the list it seems mental like they wouldn't work together, but it DOES

Awesome! Free tickets are the best tickets!
Oh, also these guys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO4MbNWDQc8) are going to playing in Columbus in October.
I just read their biography on Wikipedia. Totally Badass! I like their sound too
The Black Keys are my hometown band; I spent most of the day listening to their earlier stuff (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7qWjFP2bTA)
I just rolled through the Black Keys catalog the other day at work after my friend introduced me to Gold on the Ceiling. I mean, it is hard to not have heard anything by them at this point due to the all the commercials and popularity of some of their singles but I am glad I gave them a long look. Brothers and El Camino are very good albums. The earlier stuff is very raw but still awesome. And brownie points to a band that sounds good live.

This song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1gfZwejPv8) has been wedged firmly in my brainpan for the past week plus... and I can't get it out. Maybe knowing someone else who's got the charming little earworm stuck in their head will help.

Let it Go (and the entire Frozen soundtrack) has been very very VERY ohmegodkillmenow popular in my house for months now.
Honestly, I like the songs and the movie a lot. But the kids are trying their best to ruin it for us with the endless repetition. Us and a few million other parents on the planet.

DT is my all time favorite band. I just saw them play live with the Berklee college choir and string sections last month. Wow.
Never heard of pomegranatetiger before -- they do sound good.
I also just discovered goblin metal via Necrogoblikon, which hits on all cylinders: technical metal, ridiculous lyrics and vocals, and the very deep subject matter of green subcreatures terrorizing native earthlings.

I'm definitely a coheed fan. SSTB is clearly their best work though. What's your favorite?
In the off chance that you haven't seen it, the Neverender concert series is incredible. Coheed played 4 nights in NYC all in a row, playing the 4 first albums in their entirety. They recorded those shows and released it on DVD. The live version of delirium trigger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7NKQ1Uhfrg&t=19m9s) is killer.

Meeting up with some east coast friends at the shows, and also driving up to CT to see a different set of bands on the thursday before the weekend. I'm so pumped!

I first heard ‘spem in alium’ on my car radio, and was so entranced by it I had to stop by the side of the road. I was not fit to drive.
Kings College choir is one of the best choirs in the world, and has existed since the late fifteenth century.

Thank god I'm not the only one who doesn't really care for music. I mean, I listen to it sometimes for energy, but it's just background noise and if it were banned I wouldn't miss it. Phew, feels good to get that off my chest.
Anyway, I found my old ipod 15gb (yes, with the non-flash hard drive) and was listening The Hold Steady, which was like, the biggest thing in 2007 and I haven't heard of them again. I really like the lyrics on You Can Make Him Like You (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nu5OOnsoe0).
For classical music lovers, I've got Brahms' Symphony 2 4th mvt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ny6HjTHv80). Doesn't sound like your typical Brahms. Great thing to blast if you've got good speakers.
For just getting stuff done at work I'm listening to the Beasts of the Southern Wild soundtrack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGjUzt297xE&list=PLpYFclw_1mG4BzfcHy5ClVY4d-BySRJV1&index=17).

Thank god I'm not the only one who doesn't really care for music.
Yeah, it just doesn't do it for me.
I love silence, not noise.
But I think we're the rare exception, many people seem to like music a lot, and some really seem to need it.

What's with the killjoys coming into a music thread to say that they don't like music? Really?
Anyway, I'm loving "Far From any Road" by The Handsome Family. Released with little fanfare in 2003, it has gained a bigger audience because it was tabbed to be the title song for HBO's hit TRUE DETECTIVE.
This song has some amazing lyrics, like this bit:
When the last light warms the rocks
And the rattlesnakes unfold
Mountain cats will come
To drag away your bones

Current infatuations:

Consistent favorites:

I just got the new Flyleaf album. A lot of fans are angry that Lacey Sturm left the band, but it's not the band's fault because Sturm wanted to retire from touring to raise her children. Kristen May has a really good voice and the new album is really good.

Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRM70Jw7F4M)
God dammit, this is a good dancepop song. It has that legato vocals over quicker chord changes, like Avenged Sevenfold - Hail To The King. Anyone know any more songs with that motif?

Do you have a genre preference? I listen to lots of stuff but do tend to favor heavy rock music. Here are a few split out by genre(or rather, sub-genre):
Rock
------
Coheed & Cambria - Progressive Rock, Scifi subject matter, awesome hair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7jtc7JiRcE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7jtc7JiRcE)
Tool - For when you're angsty
Folk
-------
Cat Stevens - Just pick anything, if you feel like being a hippy and loving everybody.
Glam Rock/Pop Rock/Soul
-----------------------------
Foxy Shazam - Just listen to them. You won't regret it. Best live show I've ever seen. Recommended songs: Oh Lord, Holy Touch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgBKS4JCsec (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgBKS4JCsec)
Also, Wax Mannequin, Mr. Mustache's brother's band. I was a big fan of the "End of Me" song. It has a bit of a folk-lore feel to it. It's in my listen to every day list at this point.

+1 love hippy sabotage. Their mix of 'stay high' is pretty excellent.

My current new fave is George Ezra. For a 22 year old British guy, he sounds to me like a 45 year guy who has been kicking around Nashville for a few decades.

The kids are investigating their sami heritage, my favorite joiks so far are:
the wind, by Sofia Jannok: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPqKAuzo0tk (also recommend her TED talk about how miners are taking their land)
the sun, by Solveig Andersson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FzEpXNOjCY
Daniel's joik, by Jon Henrik Fjällgren: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCL9FiAuezk (winner of Sweden got talent. His "Utøya" is even stronger, but that is gone from youtube)
For the metal heads, Týr has a some good stuff. Don't really know their genre, maybe folk metal or viking metal?
In faroese: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8hyVMR7MWU

My favorites are those based on 1000 years old songs preserved in oral tradition, e.g.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXjF9po2hYk&index=13&list=RDfu2bgwcv43o and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMBWl-gSIJ4

Walk Off The Earth - Material Girl (orig. Madonna) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUvisTccZpc)
Great Madonna cover! Also, with the right interpretation, mustachian:
Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me
I think they're O.K.
If they don't give me proper credit
I just walk away
They can beg and they can plead
But they can't see the light, that's right
'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash
Is always Mister Right, 'cause we are
Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
Some boys romance, some boys slow dance
That's all right with me
If they can't raise my interest then I
Have to let them be
Some boys try and some boys lie but
I don't let them play
Only boys that save their pennies
Make my rainy day, 'cause they are
Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world
Boys may come and boys may go
And that's all right you see
Experience has made me rich
And now they're after me, 'cause everybody's
A material, a material, a material, a material world
Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world
NB. Although you may think that the large bulge on the lead singer is a pouch full of quarters for the piggy bank sound effect, she is, in fact, pregnant.

I just got Flyleaf's new album. Flyleaf have a new singer now since Lacey Sturm retired a couple of years ago so she could raise her kids without being on the road. Kristen May is a good new singer, but a lot of fans aren't giving her a fair shake. Check out their new singles "Set Me On Fire" and "Thread". They still sound terrific.

Jellyfish - Bellybutton

I love Jellyfish. My favorite song on that album is "I Wanna Stay Home." I'd rather be listening to that than my co-worker's talk radio which she currently has cranked up. The woman has a door on her office, yet it never occurs to her to close it. I'd say something, but she's a sensitive jackass.

I'm currently listening to a band called Steel Panter... They are very hillarious and they rock, but they are a bit to rauncy for most peoples tastes.
My favorite bands are
Boston
Led Zeppelin
Five Finger Death Punch
Iron Maiden
I just went to a Concert 2 weeks ago with Quiet Riot, Great White & LA guns
I'm going to another concert in a few months with Def Leppard, Tesla & Styx

Holy shit, this is like Dream Theater, if they were awesome (http://pomegranatetiger.bandcamp.com/)
I know you like progrock... have you heard Liquid Tension Experiment - Acid Rain (live Los Angeles 2008) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edqH0ofRQrM). There are no deep lyrics, just shredding.

Ariana Grande - One Last Time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPgEgaPk62M)
This one is actually pretty interesting. The video chronicles the journey of Ariana Grande's butt as it makes its way through post-apocalyptic crowds and structures. The butt defends itself against attacks from wizards, and emerges from the depths of horror to witness a meteor strike that kills it. It's goddamn beautiful.

Everyone needs to listen to Kanye - Louis the Child Remix
No, it's not a Kanye song, and it's amazing. Been listening to several other Chainsmokers remixes as well.
However, also been getting into Joris (Herz ueber Kopf, among his others) and Prinz Pi (Kompass Ohne Norden, among his others) in order to boost how much German I'm absorbing in a day. Fun and a really good learning experience.
I listen to a million things all over the place. Seriously, except metal/rock. Jazz, classical, hip hop, foreign music, south-central asian stuff, pop, EDM, fusions of all kinds. It's a lot of fun browsing Spotify.

It sort of surprises me given your eclectic taste. Many genres have influenced metal over the years. Mainly classical, blues and jazz.

Don't get me wrong there is plenty of shitty rock and metal out there, the same as every genre.

I mean, I may have jumped the gun with my statement a bit, since I'm definitely into a lot of classic rock songs, but so much of rock-ish music is grunge-y, full of really gritty, dischordant, destructive noises that distract me a lot, and I can pretty much never understand what the singer is trying to say.
I just grew up with lots of friends who were all into various kinds of rock/metal/alternative rock stuff who also played it poorly and loudly and it really turned me off.

Listening to Mudhoney. --grunge-y, full of really gritty, dischordant, destructive noises
(the lead singer, Mark Arm is alleged to be the first person in Seattle to use the term grunge).
You CAN in fact understand the words in Mudhoney songs.
...alternative rock stuff who also played it poorly...
How could you tell it was being played poorly? :-)

I guess I should clarify: I just don't like all that noise being blasted at me, in that it all seems to conflict with itself and sounds like it's failing to communicate what it wanted to.
Again, all 100% in my head, but I still think it's really distracting, noisy, and hard to follow/enjoy.
Again again, not the case with a lot of those classic rock/hard rock songs that are really f*cking cool to listen to. I just never gave rock of any kind much of a shot because every time I hear anything remotely similar to what I've heard, a switch goes off and I think "nope, not for me".
Only really listened to the Black Keys recently, if that counts.
-

I really like the Black Keys, but recently I find myself really bored with their music. I don't know if I am just burned out from it or it's because their sound has not changed over the years. Especially with their recent album. Besides a few standout songs, the album has a feel of just being a single song on repeat.

No, no shame! I discovered the same thing myself recently(ish). I remember it clearly because the kids and I were driving up to Camp Mustache in Washington last last May (2014). I stumbled upon it while getting some things from the garage for the trip and I thought, "Hmmm, I haven't heard this in ages" and threw it in the car. And then I listened and loved it all over again. I was surprised at how good it was after all these years, and not just in a nostalgic way. The kids fell asleep in their car seats so I listened to it twice on that drive. It was awesome. I don't have it in my regular rotation but I know that whenever I pull it out, it will be good.

Animal Collective - My Girls
There isn't much that I feel I need
A solid soul and the blood I bleed
But with a little girl, and by my spouse,
I only want a proper house
I don't care for fancy things
Or to take part in the freshest wave,
But to provide for mine who ask
I will, with heart, on my father's grave
On my father's grave
(On your father's grave)
I don't mean to seem like I
Care about material things,
Like a social status,
I just want
Four walls and adobe slabs
For my girls

love them, saw them once. Right now I am back into John Prine non-stop and he has a zillion albums so all set.
I'm also trying to get my dad to turn off Michael Savage or worse, at full volume while he drives me to tons of MD appts and try Spalding Gray, satirist author, wicked funny and there's only one of his performance that I could find on CD, one CD so good for zero attention span father. It's hysterical but not one laugh out of my dad. Grrrr. Maybe Sedaris next? Anything besides these extreme right wing shows, everybody yelling, tons of commercials, I do not get it. Oh so we're including podcasts now? New Hardcore History - Assyrian history is fascinating.
And I'm digging Foxing atm, just discovered them and both of their albums are great. I kind of miss the screaming vocals of The Albatross with this new 'mature' sound in The Dealer, but it's still a beautiful album.

Dropkick Possum...."but then my truck ran out of diesel. I think I'll just go eat a weasel." Funniest stuff I've heard in a long time. They're from Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania...wherever that is. They remind me of my brothers singing out on our back porch years ago. Real home-grown country stuff.

Bread - Everything I Own (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaAChZ2a_LI)
This song is really beautiful.
You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm, Kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, Set me free
The finest years I ever knew,
We're all the years I had with you
And I will give everything I own,
I'll give my life, my heart, my home
I will give everything I own
Just to have you back again.
You taught me how to love,
What its all, all above
You never said too much
But still you showed the way
In my new, I'm watching you
Nobody else will ever know
The part of me that can't let go
I will give anything I own
I'll give up my life, my heart, my home
I will give everything I own
Just to have you back again
Is there someone you know
You're loving them so
But taking them all for-granted
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And they don't hear the words you long to say
I would give anything I own,
I'll give up my life, my heart, my home,
I will give everthing I own
Just to have you back again
Just to touch you once again

Psychedelic Trance 2014 / 2015 Mix part 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNVp5IwQcYc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNVp5IwQcYc)
I like specially the first tune
00.00-04.10 Metronome - Basic Evolution
the tunes after that are not so good to me, but ok.
The best parts of the video is between 00.00-04.50 though.
Sure I like many old tunes and older music also, but if what I am listening to right now then this at least the beginning is excellent.
That is my kind of music though like more Vocal Trance, but that is what I am listening to right now. Yeah and the hot babes help in the video beginning.

Eh, Skrillex.
He's the 1970's Lawrence Welk of dubstep. Nothing but a parody of itself from back when the genre was good and people cared about more than just how filthy the bass was.

Warriors of Time by Black Tide, a modern band that reminded me very much of Iron Maiden with Black Tide's first album, light from above, then half the members left and now they put out shitty albums.
-
I found Dangerkids on accident on Spotify. These guys have a very similar sound to Linkin Park, and I was a huge Linkin Park fan. I also really like Justin Timberlake's 20/20 album. I've always hated most of his music, but this album has a jazz vibe to it that I really like.

I don't even like rap or hip hop, but I'm obsessed with Hamilton too, I've memorized pretty much all the lyrics. It probably helps that Hamilton has been one of my role models since I was in high school.

If it has hard guitars and a female singer, chances are very good I listen to it or at the very least have heard of the band. I blame Pat Benatar, whom I adored as a teenager. I tend to like the European bands--Nightwish, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Theatre of Tragedy (RIP), After Forever (another RIP but SO COOL that Floor Jansen's in Nightwish now), Amaranthe, Delain, that sort of thing. I'm not a big fan of the doomy stuff other than early Lacuna Coil but if a song catches my ear I'll listen to it.
-
Theatre of Tragedy (RIP)
The two original singers have been touring together late 2015: Venus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvZ8llmVMSQ&t=07m20s). Liv is also fronting Leave's Eyes. I find their last album King of Kings excellent - it is a concept album around the life of Norway's first king, Harald Fairhair.
-
Tame Impala. How the hell did I not know about this band? Been on a constant loop for days now.
I'm going to have the track "Let it Happen" on repeat for my upcoming half marathon...this song alone should improve my time by a few minutes.

I'm not a big fan of the doomy stuff other than early Lacuna Coil but if a song catches my ear I'll listen to it.
One of my favorite artists is Halestorm (Lzzy Hale) - incidentally my first date with my SO was a Halestorm concert in 2012. They haven't been mentioned in this thread in a couple of years, so it's time for a revival. :D
Device (feat. Lzzy Hale) - Close My Eyes Forever (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGuPViQChR0). Basically the sound of Disturbed + Halestorm. Words can not express how much I love this song.

Halestorm's okay. I've liked what I've heard but haven't spent money on them yet.
And in my continuing habit of being late to the party since I don't listen to the radio, I just discovered Adele. "Rolling in the Deep," holy shit, is that a great song.

Ali and I discovered her a few weeks ago when our parents visited.
My mom my and mother-in-law are both obsessed with her right now.
Neither of us were particularly fans, but we enjoyed this clip of Adele pranking some fans by entering an Adele look-alike contest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHXjxWaQs9o

I can't get into Arch Enemy. The moment the Cookie Monster vocals start, that's when I shut it off, which means I don't listen to about 90% of current metal. About the only band with CMV I can tolerate is Lamb of God, since for the most part I can actually understand what Randy Blythe's saying. Plus they're from Richmond so, you know, gotta support local musicians!

I haven't been listening to many albums lately. I usually put my Google Music library on shuffle. Looking at some of the the "recently played" songs:
Against Me, Van Halen
The Dear Hunter, The Flaming Lips
Thin Lizzy, Queen
Thursday, Japandroids
Kendrick Lamar, Kacey Musgraves
Some of my favorite bands include:
Thursday
Tom Petty
Taking Back Sunday
Metallica
Megadeath
Ryan Bingham
I'm definitely going to check out some of the bands listed in this thread. Thanks.

Sound of Silence -- Disturbed
Power vocal. Got teary-eyed.
I was worried that I'd no longer like the Simon and Garfunkel versions (as young guys and old guys), but I still like those (not as much as the Disturbed version).

I have terabytes of Mp3s and karaoke music. Ironically, I listen to Pandora most of the time. I used to spend a rather ridiculous amount of time organizing and setting up playlists. Maybe I got older or maybe I just got bored with it.
While my fiance and I were on our annual Seattle trip, I put on Celine Dion on Pandora and we had a lot of fun singing all of those 'old' songs of her's and Whitney Houston. My 11 year old daughter hadn't heard anything like that before and really got into it.
A few days ago I made a Rob Zombie station and played some Counter Strike: Source. I had the head phones on with the music cranked up. It was a nice little escape.

My local library has a subscription to "Overdrive" which is an online library of ebooks and audio books. I can download an app, "checkout" an audio book, and enjoy :)
In they past two weeks I've listened to:
"Life after Death" by Deepak Chopra
"Wuthering Height" by Emily Bronte
and almost done with "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson
ever since I discovered this at my library, the number of books I go through has increased immensely. I may be done with all the classics in their library by the end of the year. :P

FINSTERFORST - Mach Dich Frei - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLvjCzMrDps
English translation - http://lyricstranslate.com/en/mach-dich-frei-free-yourself.html-0
The video has a mustachian feel to me especially with the lyrics. It speaks to me anyway. When I discovered FI was an option and the way everyone is expected to live their life working a job they hate until 65 wasn't the only way I got mad and motivated. And I feel we kind of are a revolution. A relatively quiet one but in the years I have discovered it I know quite a few others who are slowly waking up as well. Maybe not quite to our level but realizing spending money isn't the best way to be happy.
-
This reminds me of bootcamp. I just graduated when it came out. You know when we didn't have to take our shoes off and there wasnt any lines in the airport and the NSA didn't read every text on your phone. You know when we were actually at peace. When the military was full of guys like me just looking for adventure and college money and werent on some antiterrorism holy crusade. I hope we can undo some madness

I am on YouTube listening to Focus@will videos. My favorite so far is:
Ambient Music for Study • Work • Focus • Concentration • 1 Hour
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fp78Yu1LYvo
I really enjoy this channel and the music produced because the tracks are geared towards focus and concentration. When I listen to the music, I can more easily get into the zone and get my work done.
I also listen when I want to relax or am doing a task that can be stimulated by music. It's great for projects, chilling out, and even works as good background music when surfing the forum. :)

Five Finger Death Punch - "Wash It All Away": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9VFg44H2z8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9VFg44H2z8)
The lyrics are perfect for people on this forum:
I've given up
On society
Up on my family
Up on your social disease
I've given up
On the industry
Up on democracy
Done with all your hypocrisy
All of the chaos
And all of the lies
I hate it
I'm wasting here
Can anyone wash it all away
I'm waiting here
For anyone to wash it all away
Wash it all away
I've given up
On the media
Feeds my hysteria
Sick of living down on my knees
I've given up
On morality
Feeds my brutality
Fuck what you think about me
All of the chaos
And all of the lies
I hate it
I'm wasting here
Can anyone wash it all away
I'm waiting here
For anyone to wash it all away
Wash it all away
I won't change for you
And I can't take the pain
There's nothing you can do
And there's nothing you can say
I've given up
On everything
Up on everything
Up on everything
I'm wasting here
Can anyone wash it all away
I'm waiting here
For anyone to wash it all away
Wash it all away
I'm wasting here
With everyone just wash it all away
I'm waiting here
For anyone to wash it all away
Wash it all away
Wash it all away

Not sure if anyone brought up Frank Ocean's Blond but it's on spotify. I can't really write one of those wordy reviews you would see in pitchfork or rolling Stone but I think it's a great album.
One thing that disappointed me was that it doesn't really have a catchy tune like swim good or novocaine but I guess mass appeal wasn't the point.

The soundtrack from Hamilton. Love it. It's so good.
And for anyone who hasn't seen the PBS documentary of Hamilton's America, I highly recommend it. It explains the broadway musical and has a lot of teasers in it for those of us who will not be paying $1000/ticket, but who are still obsessed with it.

Goldfrapp always seemed like the sort of stuff I should like but haven't really gotten into yet; I might have to check out the new album Silver Eye which sounds promising (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2euqyXXjmAo).
Speaking of synth/electropop, the latest Austra album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rzmhbiKUo0) (Future Politics) is really good but I haven't seen it reviewed well so it probably depends on how you feel about the way her voice is produced on the album!

Song posted here followed by lyrics
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=F6ZEsB4r1Xk
I've been having a hard time trying to justify
The clouds arising from the cars we drive
And a little too easy seems just a little too hard today
And I'm afraid my children are going to have to watch the world waste away
Been having a hard time trying to accept the fact
That paying money for four walls leaves the slavery intact
And a little too easy seems just a little too hard today
And I'm afraid my children are going to have to watch the world slip away
I know, I know, I know, life has become slavery
Costs two dollars a minute and additional charges to pray to god today
See I've been looking for some guidance but the voice on the phone ain't got a damn thing to say
And a little too easy seems just a little too hard today
And I'm afraid my children are going to have to watch the world fade away
I was born a little too late to see the dream that they called America
See I only want to be a Free man but it's against the law to sleep on the ground in Gods land
And a little too easy seems just a little bit insane
And I'm afraid I'm going to have to run for my life one of these days
I know, I know, I know, life has become slavery
The ground is my body, it's been poisoned with lead and junk food and toxic waste
The sky is my mind it's been clouded with cigarettes and fluorocarbons and petroleum distillates
The water's my heart, it's been broken with booze and drugs and shooting up paste
The sun is my spirit, it belongs to all of us, I guess we're all one sick race
And autonomy shall reward itself with freedom
And humility shall reward itself with peace
And the dissolution of possession and the integration of humanity
Shall bring forth a sharing of our responsibility
For our lives and our earth

Am liking the variety on this page.
Generally enjoying but still undecided on the new Pharmakon album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQfNUbg3TSs) Contact, which is getting decent reviews (from those 20 people in the world that listen to death industrial music). I've been a fan since Abandon in 2013 so I have high hopes it's a grower.
In addition to being good, there is something about Fishbach (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lw-inQlJF78) that reminds me of the recent John Oliver segment: So You Think You Can France? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkZir1L7fSY)

Maybe in a few years your little one come into the fold. My nephew became a fan at 15 after I told him that Elfman had a band before he started doing film scores for Tim Burton. It was really fun having the opportunity to introduce him to their music.

Mmh? Personally I was too lazy to fish back this thread.
Let's go with some old British bands still releasing kickass albums in 2018:
Magnum - Without Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2dGUQvHNEE)
Saxon - Thunderbolt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXhXjKigrW0)

The new Belly album!!! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH14dKCsLxM) Yea Belly! They were a band in the early 90s, released two EXCELLENT albums, had some commercial success, broke up, spent 20 years doing solo music (Tanya Donelly) or completely different careers (the other three members), and then decided to get back together and do one tour for the fun of it. That was in 2016, and the concert was amazing! I never thought I'd get to see them live because I'd missed them the first time around and then they were broken up for 20 years. And they had so much fun touring together that they started writing new material and now, 23 years after the second album was released, they have released their third! And it's GREAT and I'm just a little excited about it. Ha! (And yes, I already have tickets for their new tour!!!)
I went to Wikipedea to make sure I had my dates right and it's kindo f funny to see their discography typed out:
Star (1993)
King (1995)
Dove (2018)
Yea for being old! I get to relive my youth! :D
I know this post is hyperbolic but I've spent 25 years listening to the same two Belly albums. I love those albums to death, but it's VERY exciting to have new Belly music. Ya know?
-
^I hadn't heard Belly, sounds interesting so I got King to try out. Sounds like you felt the way I did when Slowdive released their 2017 album (which is very good) after a 22 year hiatus. (A number of years ago, Portishead also came back with a wonderful third album following a hiatus; maybe there's a pattern here?)
One of my favorite 2018 albums so far is In a Poem Unlimited by U.S. Girls, e.g. Mad As Hell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtGb5NiGBjc)
The whole album is brilliant, but this is the one doing it for me today
Janelle Monáe - Crazy, Classic, Life (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s69xpMzuFmA)
I haven't gotten into her new album much yet but loved her debut The ArchAndroid which has a pleasantly unsettling vibe to it. Anyway, on the stranger side, JM's song PYNK (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaYvlVR_BEc) features vocals from Grimes (perhaps in return for this collaboration (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTLTXDHrgtw)), who is now inexplicably dating Elon Musk!

Cool! I hope you like it. I hadn't heard of Slowdive but I checked them out. Nice! And yes, their discography timeline is very similar. :)

I listen to a wide range of music, from alternative to psychedelic to thrash metal, minus hip pop, rap, and country. I tend to listen to the same stuff over and over again until I burn out of it before moving on to something else. Psychedelic rock was something I discovered about 10 years ago and it just became my favorite genre for awhile before burning out on that too. For the last year I have been treading water in boredom being sick of a lot of what I liked and not finding anything new to listen to.
Then I found remasters of songs by fans on youtube. Like Metallica. And its blown me away.
For those what don't know, many years ago Metallica lost their bass player in an accident, and hired a young guy named Jason Newsted to take his place. On the first album he played on, 'And Justice for All', the rest of the band hazed him, and even turned down his bass on the album before it was released. The album is a classic anyways, but the fans have always wanted to know what it would have sounded like if they had left the bass in there as they should have. Well, peeps have been doing it themselves and some of the stuff on youtube is just blowing me away.
I do not like what Metallica has become. I think they started going downhill with their black album, but their old stuff is amazing, and I am really enjoying listening to the fan edited stuff. This means I am also picking up other metal bands I used to listen too like Slayer and Metal Church. Its been a lot of fun.
For now. Then I will get sick of it and the search will continue.

Nightwish. "Sahara"
It reminds me that I need to go back to Morocco. I need more desert dunes in my life.

The last week or so I have really gotten back into listening to Enigma and Moby. So relaxing but still a good listen.

Indigo and Morcheeba were both good listens.
Funny how Moby got a lot of backlash for the way he whored out Play to advertisers after the initial lukewarm release. The b-sides Play album is nearly as good as the main album. He maybe went into a slump after that but I found Wait For Me to be particularly good of his more recent stuff (I think he said this was the album he always wanted to make when unchained from the drive to be commercially successful)--e.g. JLTF (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3HyxnWKhDU)

So much choral Christmas music, especially "Christmas" by Voces8 and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. I'm no longer Christian but choral Christmas music is my favorite genre.

Thanks for the Voces8 recommendation! Fellow ex-churchgoer and current Xmas music-listener.

You’re welcome. If you get a chance to see them live, take it. They are spellbinding and breathtaking. And they’re very gracious: I’ve seen them twice, and after both concerts the all stayed around for a long time to chat with the audience.

The National - Graceless
Serious question: does one need to be stoned to appreciate The National?

This week its been all about 80's love songs on my pandora when working out. Hey , I am a 54 year old guy and its not what I would consider love songs but good 80's music! haha. Maybe i am just sappy. I know like Micheal Jacksons " Make a change" is on the list. The week before or right after Enigma it was soft rock of the 70's.

I've had All Star stuck in my head for most of the week for some reason.

After a several year hiatus from engaging with music, I have just started to listen to music again.
I'm really really enjoying the new Mitski album. It's fantastic.
