Last night DH & I  were fortunate enough to go out to a dinner party. We ate hors d'oeuvres, including delicious homemade hommous and storebought fine cheeses and crackers; our hostess served us pork belly with perfect crackling, nuggety golden roasted potatoes, and coleslaw; and a homebaked chocolate dessert. This was all washed down with an array of wines which included a 20-year old Hunter Valley semillon, 15-year old Barossa Shiraz, ice wine from Central Otago, etc. Wow.

Contrast this with the previous night. On top of my usual half-day at the day (office) job, I had put in 7 hours in my casual hospitality job. At 9pm I had my dinner in a 15 minute break. It was: 1) a packet of potato crisps; and 2) an apple.

Swings and roundabouts.

Tonight we had salad from the garden topped with smoked chicken.  Last summer we impulse-bought an electric smoker that was on clearance at the feed store.  Love the thing because it's set it and forget it, cheaper to run than charcoal or propane, and keeps the heat of cooking out of the house this time of year.  I've put back some dead fig branches to experiment with as a smoking wood.

...except, like the Momofuku people themselves, I cooked the dried mushrooms longer to make broth for another recipe, then sliced and pickled the mushrooms.

Roasted sweet potato slices and garlic cloves (oven-roasted, pepper, salt, canola oil)

+ whole-wheat linguine with mushroom cream sauce (mushrooms sauteed in butter, simmered down with cream, nutmeg, garlic powder salt and pepper)

Tonight:: cast iron cooking, add all: steak, gold & red potatoes, purple onion, carrots, red bellpepper, yellow squash, zucchini, mushrooms, garlic, herbs, evoo.
Spinach salad. Watermelon.

I'm waiting for the butcher shop to fill my frozen meat order, so until then it's vegetarian food! Tonight we had eggplant and red pepper pasta tossed in a bok choy pesto (have way too much bok choy from the garden) and a side salad tossed with balsamic and olive oil. Simple food is the best.

budget bytes chicken yakisoba. super simple recipe. but the Worcestershire sauce came in a little strong tasting. I will make again with different sauce recipe.

Nachos.  Not fancy meat and pico nachos.  My childhood nachos; cheap tortilla chips on a plate, covered in cheese (sharp cheddar... I'm not a complete heathen) and microwaved.  Totally hitting the spot.

My latest food of interest is a whole super-ripe/mushy mango.

This is how I eat it:
- cut off a little bit of skin at the top
- use a spoon to scoop out the soft, sweet innards (working my way around the huge seed)

Omelette of two homegrown eggs (both double-yolkers!) stuffed with homegrown cherry tomatoes and red chiles, and storebought avocado and chicken-apple sausage (markdowns I stocked up on) and topped with homemade fermented hotsauce.  Homegrown honeydew melon and storebought steamed broccoli on the side.  On days off, we eat a big "brunch" that holds us until dinner.

Tonight we'll be eating smoked lamb ribs, braised collards, fingerling potato/green bean salad, and fried green tomatoes.

Eating like kings this time of year!

I made a two pans of banana french toast casserole this morning. One I baked today and the leftovers will last the week and the other I stashed in the freezer for later. (baby is due in 3 weeks (possibly sooner) and I want food ready)

Roast spaghetti squash, ricotta, roast chicken, half an avocado and a mysterious Middle Eastern spice blend/rice topper I bought at a charity market from people who didn't speak English well.  It is green and has pistachios and maybe dehydrated onions?

Very yummy and I appreciate my past self doing all that cooking and buying the avocado long enough ago that it was perfectly ripe today.

Got back in town, had to invent supper from what was in the fridge... home fries with pulled pork, Maggi, and a fried egg can really hit the spot when you're hungry (I had walked in from the airport).

I'm teaching my SO some basic cooking skills. Last night was roux, which became a bechamel, and then a cheese sauce. I used that to make a chicken broccoli mushroom rice casserole. I always pack some sort of fruit to go with lunch, and today is homemade blackberry-applesauce. Perfect lunch on a cold fall day. Happy Halloween!

It is Monday night in NZ: i had made the soup yesterday when i had time, and it sat for a day improving in the fridge, and was ready for me when i got home and was just about up for reheating something in the microwave, and not much else.

Homemade garlic bread, also prepped yesterday, and frozen. Garlic bread you make yourself has the merit of being as buttery and crammed with parsley as you like, which in my case is a lot.

I remembered your shaved Brussels sprouts when I ran across this hashed Brussels sprouts recipe, and decided to give it a try for Christmas dinner.  I'm a convert now; they cook so quickly in a pan.  Yum.

At this moment - eating a bowl of leftover black bean and turkey soup.

Lumpia, extra crispy sweet potato fries, and kale chips. I used the same seasoning for the kale chips as the sweet potato fries.

Just ate rice and beans. Was really good. My almost school age daughter last night said that it was really yummy; i'm quite chuffed! Super healthy with brown rice :-)

For breakfast, homemade egg, cheese and chicken sausage "biscuit" on english muffin. Today after a little sledding kids had lentil soup and I had lima beans with yellow rice (yes from the box but it was good!). Because of the holidays, actually TOO much food around. I'll have things planned to eat, and then people will bring more food in, which will need to get eaten and the planned menu delayed, or thrown out. I've had to throw food out these last couple weeks : (
