Trip to Chile - Advice from Mustachians
« on: June 21, 2016, 07:20:21 AM »
My husband and I would like our next travel adventure to be to Chile.  Who has traveled there and can make recommendations about things to do, accommodations, and side tours (if you took any)?  My husband and I enjoy "living" history and the outdoors.  We aren't into extreme outdoors, but we aren't afraid of a good hike.  We enjoy situations that allow us to interact with locals and aren't overhyped.

(Translation:  We aren't lay on the beach people.)

Also, I've looked up currency conversion rates and am clearly doing something wrong.  Can someone help me understand the currency conversion?  For instance, one hotel advertised as 117.000 Chilean Pesos.  How much would this be in USD?

Use xe.com for currency conversion.

1.00 USD   =   676.267 CLP

It'd be about $170, I would think you should be able to find cheaper if you want.  (The decimal point and comma are switched in South American compared to North American)  I recommend downloading the xe.com app.  When I lived in Chile it was closer to $1 = 500 pesos so taking everything to the left of the decimal and multiplying by 2 gave a good enough estimate.

A luca is a thousand pesos and it's a pretty common way to give the price of something.

Sadly, despite living in Santiago for a while I didn't travel that much and I don't have many recommendations.  Have you decided roughly where you want to go? Vina/Valpo, South, North, etc?

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
