This awful haircut that dudes are getting

It's not 1988. You're not MC Hammer. Your name is David. You're from Omaha. You drink craft beer, read Malcolm Gladwell, and watch TED talks.

Meh?

Just looks like a crew cut with a bit more on top so it can be combed over to the side.  Of the many, many, many things to worry about these days . . . this doesn't even register for me.

Also, MC Hammer did not ever wear that hairstyle.

My hair is thinning out on top so I shave it with a 1/2 setting each week or 2.  Before the impending baldness restricted my options, I cut my own hair going back to freshman year of high school - never anything complicated but I couldn't bring myself to pay for a haircut.

The haircut you posted doesn't look bad at all.  If someone has enough healthy hair to style it, go for it.  Extra kudos if you can do it yourself.

Not worried about it. It's just all I can do not to erupt into uncontrollable giggles every time I see it. Too legit to quit FTW. I feel like it's going to be this generation's flock of seagulls cut.

Genuinely confused how that could be considered a ridiculous haircut. It's an updated version of a fairly venerable cut, ala Hitler youth or Peaky Blinders. I don't see Hammer at all.

My 14-year old just got that cut -- it's basically a fade with some extra hair on the top that he can mess with, and is a fairly styling' look for summer.

I encourage my kids to have the ability to look reasonably sharp if the occasion warrants it. (a couple of button-down shirts, a few pairs of non-athletic shorts/pants and a good haircut go a long way, and none of that is expensive.)

Also, we're leaving for a funeral tomorrow, and not having to do emergency shopping (we're not churchgoers) is a delightful side-benefit.

Flock of seagulls involved combing your hair in three different directions and covering a significant portion of your face which I would imagine also blocked the wearer's vision. And it was called "flock of seagulls". You're going to need to get a lot weirder than this before you can start making that comparison.

Looks like something from the 50s without the wax.

Also, not very different from the cut I give my husband every month for several years now.

“We call them ‘nipsters’ — neo-Nazi hipsters,” says Long Nguyen, the co-founder of style magazine Flaunt, using a term that became popular in a 2014 Rolling Stone article. “It’s really important for them to make inroads into young people’s culture, in order to expand their base. It’s a lot easier to do that when they’re stealing the look of a familiar hipster style.”

I'm sure a lot of guys are paying $50 for this cut, but if you look close you'll see that you could maintain it (maybe minus the fade) at home.  Buzz the sides up to the line and let the top grow.  Seems like a reasonably frugal hairstyle to me.

And I'd do that style or any other if it would make me look like the model in the picture.

Another vote that this is an extremely normal haircut.  Sure, it's a trendy haircut right now, but even relatively normal things can be popular at any given time.  Doesn't make them inherently stupid.

I have a difficult time getting worked up about anybody's hair choices (I just look puzzled at those who worry about man buns and the like).  It's just hair.  It's a frequently-changeable accessory based on current fashion; nobody gets annoyed when the color of the season is chartreuse, so who cares if the haircut of the season is high and tight?  I might notice if someone's haircut is particularly avant garde or particularly dated, but as long as it's reasonably clean and neat, it is of no consequence to my life.

As to the neo-nazi thing, white supremacists have very purposefully chosen to brand themselves with a look that reads as extremely vanilla and normal, in an explicit attempt to normalize their point of view and make them seem more relatable to other white people.  Polo shirts, khakis, things like that.  It's not an accident, it's a strategy.  It remains to be seen whether that will fizzle out and we can all go back to enjoying the regular stuff that historically has not been associated with white supremacists, or whether they will be so successful in their branding campaign that they will have officially Ruined polo shirts for everybody else.

I couldn't view the first picture (work blocked site due to porn, hello IT guy if you read this). But it kinda sounds like my haircut. My wife cuts my hair about every 4 weeks, 1/4" on the sides and 1 1/4" on top and a little bit of trimming with scissors. So not as long on top as the stylish people but I think it looks pretty good. And I guess some people assume I am alt-right due to the haircut.

Count me in as thoroughly confused. THat's just a normal hair cut. Hell, I see men AND women with variations of this and have for years. My own son has been giving himself this haircut since he was 14 (very easy to do/maintain on one's own).

Maybe when there are weird designs shaved into the side one could call it ridiculous or perhaps tangentially relate it to an MC Hammer 'do. Honestly, wasn't Hammer more well known for his choice in pants rather than his choice in hair?

Standard military go-to for those folks who have to keep the sides short but push the length limits (more like bulk limits) on top so they have something to style and still look like a person and less like a cookie-cutter military member.

At work the hair is combed over so it lays down, out of work there's other options, just like the pic.

I like it!  It's very retro.  About 10 years ago I would see artist guys in Brooklyn wearing this style, and now it is gaining more popularity.

The younger neo-Nazi types are trying to brand shaved sides as the "fascie," supposedly because it looks like Hitler's hair. But the one pictured isn't very severe and doesn't come across that way.  And even if it did, we should all just refuse to let fascists re-brand a perfectly fine old hair style!  They can't just take it over! It's hair, not the Sudetenland. And they want to look like Hitler, they're going to have to copy his weird little stache too.

I'm not bothered.  The bigger concern is people in their 40s or older who are still rocking the exact same hair style they had at 16.  You're supposed to change with the times.

I don't have anything against the haircut per se, but I see it everywhere. The style I see is a lot longer than what is in the OP's photo. The sides are shaved and the hair on top is gelled up and significantly flopping over to one side like an ocean wave.  I saw it mostly in Europe the last couple years, but I see it more and more here now.  I'm trying not to, but I can't help but associate that hairstyle with the negative stereotypes of "hipster millennial."

In fact, I did a search for "millennial hairstyle" and found this:

A similar but, I guess, longer version of this called the "meet me at mcdonalds" haircut (looks like a llama if you ask me) has been banned in some schools in the uk because of the cheekiness of such an extreme hair cut... or something.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/5640807/meet-me-mcdonalds-haircut-banned-schools/

FWIW, my 4 year old has curly hair that has finally grown out enough and I'm going to attempt to cut it like the OP's link because I think he'll look super adorable with his hair like that.  If I mess it up, he'll be back to the standard high and tight.

It does look kind of silly, but I don't think it's a serious threat to the future of the Western World.  Is it really any worse than the Kurt Cobain hair I had in high school?

I have a visceral reaction against this haircut. Because I'm older and the people who sported that do when I was growing up were neo nazi types. Skin heads were completely bald, while guys who actually served in the military had short hair all over.

It also reminds me of people who are shaved like a poodle; some areas really short/shaved, others floofy. Don't like it.

I've got no issue with the haircut in the OP.  Mullets are very 80s, but the worst mullet I've seen was one on a 5-year-old girl sometime in the late 90s (her mom had that haircut as long as I'd know her, still had it, then she gave it to her poor kid.)

I have had the same style pretty much since forever, it just changes in length; there's only so much you can do with wavy/curly hair that does its own thing.

The only hairstyle that causes a decent reaction (of disgust) for me is a rat-tail.  I worked with a lady who had a mostly-mullet with a long rat-tail and I just wanted to cut it off.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
