I love shovelling snow, and where I live we get it for 6 months a year. My father gave me his old snow blower when he bought a new one and it sat unused for 5 years. I eventually gave it to my brother.

And, I'm not shovelling a piddly 20 feet of sidewalk...I have an 80 foot driveway double width, 3 decks, a patio, and a sidewalk. I keep them clear all winter.

  • Doing my taxes (not just "doing them", either: I fill out the forms multiple ways to determine the optimal allocation among my tax-deferred and Roth retirement accounts
  • The smell of a candle or match when it's blown out

Winter, being cold when I go to bed
Crockpot
Budget
Cleaning, decluttering and organizing
I like to put my nose in a book and smell it. Some books have a distinctive smell that reminds me of my childhood.
Animals liek rats, bats and snakes
Feeling the hair being pulled out when I use my epilator or when I'm plucking my eyebrows. The feeling is truly satisfying.

Where I used to live in Massachusetts, there was a restaurant owner near me that (I am guessing) loved shoveling snow too. There would be a giant blizzard of the snow-measured-in-feet-instead-of-inches variety, and work would be canceled and I'd go for a walk around the neighborhood... everything buried except this rectangle of sidewalk in front of his restaurant, which was 100% bare pavement with the snow still coming down furiously. And sometimes he would be standing in the doorway, shovel in hand, staring at the snow, just waiting for enough snow to stick so he could go back out.

Anyone else here enjoy Marmite (or Ultramite)? Given the number of kiwis/aussies/brits on the forums, I hoping I'm not alone.

Marmite- yay! Especially on grilled cheese sandwiches.

Black licorice, black gumdrops, black jelly beans.

The smell of pipe tobacco (and I'm a non-smoker, who normally can't stand the smell of tobacco).

I notice smells are a recurring trend here!

The smell of tomato plants, but not the taste of tomatoes (raw anyway).

Doing laundry. Related: hanging laundry to dry.

I actually really enjoy weeding a garden.

Being cold. Obviously not hypothermia or anything, but being a bit uncomfortable is oddly enjoyable to me.

Feeling lost somewhere. This can be very exciting.

Well, I kinda enjoy saving money...

I also enjoy the smell of gasoline. But the smell of new plastic is even better, especially the heavy stuff, like vinyl shower curtains. But rubbing alcohol is the best of them all.

Others include:
+1 for organizing & alphabetizing

Recreational Math - I received the Humongous Book of Trigonometry Problems for my birthday. Previously completed THBO Algebra Problems, and THBO Calculus problems.

My wife enjoys farting on me. In a Stocholmish twist, I've come to see it as love. Stinky, stinky love.
I think I'm also partial towards the smell of rubbing alcohol and that smell inside nail salons. Wow, that is an amusing way to express love lol

Now that is one useful activity to enjoy; I'm sure that it does not go unappreciated!

WHAT!? The taste is so off-putting to me that I cannot fathom people actually enjoying that. Wow!

With all the mentions of Marmite, I think that I'll have to try it the next time I see it.

Actually, I've heard that the concoction sold as "Marmite" in Australia/NZ is actually an entirely different mixture (made by an entirely different company) than the real thing sold in the UK (a bit like Cadbury's in the US). Your mistake may be forgivable ;).

You can still get the UK version of Marmite in Australia, I think. But yes there is also an NZ version, which I've never tried, so I can't judge it. But I like the UK version. I also enjoy Bovril, which is from UK as well. LOVE it. But yeah, neither are that easily accessible in Australia. I jumped on Bovril recently when Aldi was temporarily offering it.

Interesting! Was this one particular occurrence, or just in general? Would you go out of your way to get stung?

I'm the same way! I have a decent cold tolerance (walking outside with tshirt and shorts when it's under 38°F), but even if it gets to uncomfortable temperatures, I still enjoy it.

KittyCat, I like durian, too, but being SE Asian, it would probably be more strange if I didn't like it.

To the Australians who like Vegemite, what did you think of the Vegemite chocolate? The boyfriend quite likes it, I'm less of a fan but if I'm peckish and there aren't any other options I'll still take it, haha.

I like fatty cuts of meat, and certain types of offal. I gather they are not  so popular with the general population in Australia, as they tend to be cheaper. I'm sure there are other things but I'll come back later if I think of any.

Budget spreadsheets (ok, not unusual on this forum but I'm the only person I know at work or in my various social circles who has a budget spreadsheet, let alone enjoys updating it). I don't record everything we spend, it's more a way of working out how much I can put into savings each fortnight.

Watching educational maths/science/engineering documentaries when home on sick leave. Very comforting.

Doing mental arithmetic. It's kind of more habit now.

Instant coffee. I do appreciate a good cappcucino, but I'm more than happy with instant coffee.

I hate Vegemite, but I did try the Vegemite chocolate (someone brought a block to a party - I would never have bought it myself). It was surprisingly ok. It was a little bit like salted caramel (cos there was a caramel filling). Maybe I'd set my expectations so low that it was ok? I dunno.

+1 to fatty cuts and (some) offal. Definitely NOT liked in the US by and large. But I love chicken gizzard, beef and elk heart, and of course marrow bones. Not as much love for kidney and liver, although they make a glorious addition to chili.

Getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist. It feels like a mini massage inside my head and instantly relaxes me to the point where I am almost in a trance. Either it's genetic or my hygienist has a special touch, because my daughter has the same reaction. When asked what she would do if she won the lottery, my daughter answered "hire my hygienist to clean my teeth every night just before bedtime."

+1

The smell of a new box of crayons and also of Playdoh.

The "heels" of bread

Also, using up the last of something and throwing the packaging away. Maybe it is part of my minimalist tendencies?

Nice! I actually do not know too many SE Asians. I should ask my friend who went to school in Malaysia up until high school if she likes durian.

I don't like liver so much, but I do enjoy chicken hearts.

After I showed my expenditure and financial accounts spreadsheet to two different friends, one wanted to get started with his, while the other wanted me to take care of her finances :) I'm not aware of another person in my social circles who does this, but there may be one or two lurking in there.

doing taxes
organizing things (I used to love it when my friends had to clean their rooms and I could go help organize when I was a kid)
rainy days
stale candy that's gotten chewy
spending 5+ hours carefully and methodically working a long hard problem (math, science, engineering, etc)
watching QVC-not to ever buy anything, but I find the handling items and descriptions super relaxing (google ASMR if you don't get this)

Smells: tomato plants, tobacco (in the can, not the smoke), cow manure (aged, at a distance... to me it just smells like "farms").

Activities: doing own taxes, spending hours finding flight itineraries that cost the least and/or give the most points.

I like doing taxes too - which is good, since people pay me for that. But I guess I'm in good company - enjoying tax prep is not a rarity on the MMM forums!

I like doing jigsaw puzzles. I bought an 9,000 piece puzzle last month, but then I realized that I have no space large enough in my house to set it up. I sadly deleted all of the 18,000 pc puzzles off my Amazon wishlist.

For the record, my puzzle is 76 in x 54 inch (6.33 ft x 4.5 ft). It's the 4.5ft height that's the real trouble - we actually have a table that will fit it lengthwise (but only 4ft heightwise).

Flat soda - specifically dark sodas like Coke, Dr. Pepper, etc. I'll open bottle (on the rare occasions I get one) and let it go flat in the fridge for a few days. I think this is because I wasn't allowed soda until I was maybe 10 so I never got used to the carbonation.

Clearing gross fluids out - I did my walk through for respiratory school this weekend and I got to help suction an incubated patient. Watching the chunky, green congestion go to clear healthy secretion was awesome.

The NURSE almost gagged? Wow, that must have been quite a description! I'm surprised, we did suctioning as a check off during nursing school. Didn't realize there were curricula that didn't require it hands-on.

I'm sure they at least had to do some hands on training, but nursing school was 10+ years ago for her and she has pretty much works home health (med management) and as corporate office nurse so her one-on-one contact with fluids is limited. But I've seen her gag pulling a booger out of my nieces's nose too so maybe it's just a snot thing with her.

Yes yes yes to weird, slow movies.

Hooray! Any favorites? Have you seen The Turin Horse (aka, the recent winner of the weird, slow movie category)? I also really loved Meek's Cutoff. Both from 2011, I think.

- FIDS (Forest Interior Dwelling Species) specifically birds, when your in deep in the woods you hear birds that you'd otherwise never know existed
- Tomato plants, I love the smell of them on my hands after working to tie them up
- Metal detecting, pulling an old coin out of the ground and thinking about where it's been
- Deer antlers, no two are exactly alike and spotting one in late winter/spring is exciting
- Old tractors, I can't get enough of working on and with old tractors from the 40's, 50's, and 60's
- Wood stoves, very rewarding to me about splitting, stacking, and heating your house all winter with an almost free fuel source
- Manual labor, it's a great way to work out and you feel like you accomplished something at the end of the day, unlike my desk job

Slow movies. Like, it's over and other people respond with "but did anything happen??"
Yes yes yes to weird, slow movies.

Hooray! Any favorites? Have you seen The Turin Horse (aka, the recent winner of the weird, slow movie category)? I also really loved Meek's Cutoff. Both from 2011, I think.
I haven't but I'll check them. On the spot, I was thinking of, for example, "Solaris," "Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner," and almost every old Japanese movie, especially directed by Ozu.

I have to catch these away from hubby, who likes dreck. Maybe we can be slow movie buddies!

Man, it sounds like we might be destined to be movie buddies. DH and I went on a big old Japanese movie run the past few years - love Ozu. There's also some amazing stuff from the 60s (not slow, but super awesome jazz-driven amazingness) - Criterion released some great box sets, and the Teshigahara one was probably my favorite (Face of Another, Pitfall, Woman in the Dunes). Solaris is next on our Tarkovsky list, we just watched Andrei Rublev this summer. Atanarjuat is new to me, I'll check it out!

Oh, and I can't wait to see Manakamana - 2 hours of people (and goats) in Tibetan cable cars? Sign me up!

I like to put my nose in a book and smell it.
This absolutely. I huff books and have done so my entire life. They all have their own smells, and I love them. It's fucking weird, but my husband loves me anyway.

Broccoli above all. Also brussel's and every member of the brassica family that I've tried.
I love weeding my garden plot.
I love stopping at red lights (which allow me to look at all the happy trees).
Riding my bike during storms.
Living in small spaces.
Doing my taxes; planning; making calculations
Going to the dentist
