I've never had a problem with bagging my groceries. Since I walk or bike, I can only buy as much as I can carry anyway, so it's usually in a basket. I can generally unload while the person before me is paying, and I put heavy stuff first when possible. Then as they scan, I load up my backpack, and then my reusable bags, maybe pausing while I pay, then finish up. If there are baggers, they might help me, and if necessary I'll tell them to leave the heavy stuff for me to put in my backpack.
The part I hate about bagging groceries is using the self checkout, and having to put things on the sensors without bags, and then having to pack it up after. Waste of time all around. I prefer staffed checkouts, but sometimes the lines are so long and the self-checkouts are empty so I'll do that instead. Honestly you should get money off for using a self checkout, it saves them staffing costs and I'm doing their job for them.
Ha. Are you familiar with that awkward moment when the next person in line sees that you've just paid the machine and starts walking towards your station but you're not actually done yet? Sometimes they get right next to me and look confused because something other than the normal routine is happening.
That brings up another thing I hate, really just cant stand is when the person in front of me is paying by check and hasnt even filled out the store name yet until there whole purchase is done!
The store I mostly go to the Cashier usually bags but I always help them because I like to pack them heavy and the less bags the better. Plus I pretty much shop every morning its blocks away so we have less waste, save $ and less bags anyhow.
I gotta jump in as my "thing I hate" is sort of related.
I HATE WHEN THE PERSON BEHIND ME IN LINE IS ABSOLUTELY LOSING IT ABOUT HAVING TO WAIT... and trying to draw me into their anger. For whatever reason, this happens to me all the time. There will be some kind of SLIGHT delay... I mean, I am not talking a 30 minute wait at an upscale grocery store where in theory you are paying more for better service... I am talking about the Dollar Tree, the salvage grocery store, places like that.
Inevitably, I get into line and there's an elderly or a person perhaps with a disability a few people ahead of us and it's slowing the line down. Or there's a person getting balloons and we are waiting for them to pick them out.
The person behind be starts shifting around a lot, then they start sighing really loud, then eventually they mutter a few things about how they need to open another register - all while progressively trying to make eye contact with me, or engage me verbally to complain with them.
NO. I do not want to complain. I don't want to ride on the misery bus with you. I have my own misery bus that I ride at different times and I just refuse to add to it. NO.
I genuinely do not know the situation of the person behind me, perhaps they have a medical condition and need to get out of the store as soon as possible- perhaps they have a dependent who is waiting for them to be picked up from school/daycare/whatever, I am sure I am having a blind-spot here.
BUT... if waiting in a line is the worst part of your entire day, that's a pretty ok day... ya know?
