The Ultimate Mustachian Food Guide
« on: May 13, 2015, 08:12:22 AM »
So, I love food and I probably spend more time than I should thinking about what to eat. The MMM forum has been a great place for me to optimize my food budget and try out new recipes. Russ has created the amazing Mustachian Recipe Index, but there are so many other great non-recipe-related threads about food. I've always had trouble remembering threads that I've read, so I've decided to compile all the food-related discussions we've had in the forums.

I've done my best to comb through the threads but I've definitely missed a few threads here and there - let me know if I've missed anything and I can update this post with new links. Suggestions about the organization of the threads will be welcome too. Thanks!

Edit: The list is complete as of 10/20/15. I'll come back and update it after a few months!

Edit (8/10/21): Final update of this list. That's it for me - hope this remains useful for everyone!

Wow, that's a lot of threads! Do mustachians do anything but eat and talk about eating?

Acorn, that food guide is AMAZING!!! Thank you so much, on behalf of all the people who will gain from it, for doing this!

I hope the mods make it a sticky somewhere.

Idea: Food budget by region. e.g., Folks in Canada rely on some very different approaches than folks in the continental US can get away with, so there've been some threads specific to that. Maybe the next person doing a search for that, or any other region of the world, could compile its list into the format you've developed.

Well food spending is usually the biggest variable part of any budget...but to answer your question...no ;)

This is great, I was JUST thinking when I was reading a thread about the 4-50% challenge that we had a whole thread about what people do with a whole chicken. This is a great resource, I'll pin it to the top of the page. Thanks so much!

Thanks, Acorn!  This is great!  My household finds that food costs can be our highest monthly expenditures (outside of mortgage and childcare) so this compiled listing of threads will be great for us to review!

So, I love food and I probably spend more time than I should thinking about what to eat. The MMM forum has been a great place for me to optimize my food budget and try out new recipes.

Thanks, this is very timely for me. My May food cost was fully double what it normally is. Too much eating out and Memorial Day weekend I put expensive steaks on the grill all three days.

Great thread.

Trying chickpeas right now. Price and nutritional value similar to lentils, though soaking and cooking takes longer.

Has anyone seen good posts for people with peanut allergies? It seems everyone's advice includes a handful of nuts and peanut butter. I'm trying to reduce the cost for work lunches and snacks in a healthy way (ie not heavily processed foods).

Have you tried snacking on Roasted Soy beans or sunflower seeds?

My wife has a peanut allergy but loves the wasabi soy beans (similar to this on Amazon) or roasted sunflower seeds (similar to this on Amazon)

Just a follow up, I have tried some of these and found a brand that does soy beans and snap peas that I love. They are my new vice. Thank you for sharing!
