MST3K

No joke I came in here to post this, and when I clicked the last page, your post was at the top of the page and was the first one I read. So, +1 and all that.

BTW, it's not a "TV show", but check out Rifftrax if you haven't. I'm sure you have, but I'll pass it along just the same.

Easy pickins for me-

Dexter (although the final season was a let down for me)
The Walking Dead
Battlestar Galactica (The remake with Edward James Olmos)
Top Gear UK (The US version is horrible)

All the good ones are taken - Monk, MST3K, Top Gear (The Original).

A relative of mine practically shoved THE LOVE BOAT into my face and begged me to watch it. It wasn't bad.

I like JAMES MAY'S MAN LAB.

Is anyone watching the new HBO series, True Detective?  OMGoodness, so good.  Highly recommend.
So true! Love it!

Happier At Home, I tried watching Grimm's pilot but wasn't hooked. Maybe I could give it another try.

Tough one.  There are two shows that I have devoured over the past year in very short periods of time.  The first is HOMELAND on Showtime.  CIA/terrorist stuff with an awesome cast and even better writing.  I'm surprised I've only seen one other mention because its awesome.  The next is BREAKING BAD.  After watching 4 or 5 episodes back to back I feel like I'VE been on a meth binge (not based on any personal experience).

Battlestar Galactica (the recent one)
Lost
Chuck
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Six Feet Under (just finished this two days ago and I'm still crying over it. I actually may never fully recover.)
BREAKING BAD
Arrested Development
The West Wing (!!!)
Veronica Mars
Top Gear (UK version)
Life (NBC)
Firefly
House

Still airing:
Orphan Black
Derek
Hannibal (my husband loves this; I love the visuals and the acting but it's way too dark for me to keep watching.)

@ichangedmyname-I was really, really sad when Life ended, but at least it had an ending (V Mars, I'm looking at you). I've watched Life two times over since and recommend it to everyone I know.

I was PISSED when I finished V Mars. That "final" episode was such a joke. Really excited that the movie is coming out. Finally, some closure!

Same with Firefly. I am eternally upset that there are only like 13 episodes, though at least the movie was some closure. I've seen FF at least half a dozen times. It's one of my go-to comfort shows.

I actually thought that the movie (Serenity) sucked hairy balls compared to the brilliance that was Firefly... The writing wasn't nearly as sharp.

But the Veronica Mars movie is very, very exciting. If she doesn't end up with Logan I'll be heartbroken.

Hello new friends!

I was just telling my husband how mad I still am that NBC cancelled it so they can give Jay Leno a primetime talk show. Also very excited for Veronica Mars, it's been awhile and i've been waiting for it. Firefly is simply a must. Can't stop the signal.

Wow, this is an old thread...

I read the first and last page, and I can't believe that "The Simpsons" wasn't mentioned on either. So there's my vote.

The Simpsons

I am surprised no one has mentioned them yet.

Probably because the Ian Maxtone-Graham era now outnumbers the good episodes 2-1 (that and the median age of the board is probably young enough to not be old enough to remember back when it was GOOD, let alone old enough to understand the cultural references that helped make it as such). It's hard to call a series a great classic when 2/3rds of the entire quarter-century run has never surpassed formulaic mediocrity.

You are right, though... the first seven seasons (and a handful from season eight) were spectacular and well withstand the ravages of time.
This. I was thinking in the context of current shows, and The Simpsons, while still on the air apparently, hasn't been worth watching in at least ten years.  But the early stuff is gold.

Wow, this is an old thread...

Yup - old resurrected threads can be gems from the past.  I recently enjoyed the business card title thread when that reared its head the other day.

'Card Carrying Member'.  Snicker.

By the way, my 9 year old son LOVES your name I.P.... and I really like a lot of your posts.

The simpsons.  I don't care how much of a turd the last 2/3 of the series has been (and probably a bigger fraction until it becomes unprofitable), the first decade of episodes dominates everything.  It's I give it the title of "master of the universe".

Also:

Breaking Bad
Walking Dead
Game of Thrones
Trailer Park Boys
Sons of Anarchy
Futurama
Dexter (though it went downhill at the end)
Seinfeld
Arrested Development
Freaks and Geeks
Orange is the new black

The best jokes are the multi-layered ones. It's a puerile kid joke! It's an obtuse IT joke! It's a reference to The Tick (the comics and the animated or live-action series, both deserving consideration for this topic)!

It only got mentioned once in someone's "not my number 1 list" so I have to highlight it here:

Parks and Rec

Honestly, the funniest show I've seen. If I could only pick one show to watch for the rest of my life it would be Parks and Rec.

I felt sure that The Simpsons was mentioned somewhere, but I wasn't willing to wade through pages 2 and 3 to find out where. I haven't had cable/satellite for 9 years, and most of the Simpsons episodes that I watched were re-runs during my high school and college years, so I guess I was heavily exposed to the glory years and less so to the recent shortcomings. The first decade was incredible, though.

Star Trek: The Animated Series. I had no idea--it is fabulous. And it's a cartoon! Check it out on Netflix, especially the episode by D.C. Fontana about Spock…it's called "Yesteryear." There's another Spock episode written by Walter Koenig…"The Infinite Spock."

How has noone mentioned NCIS yet? Definitely my current favorite.

I don't know if I'd put that as my one vote, though -- too many good shows over time, and hard to compare current vs past ones where my perception may have been affected by nostalgia.

Why not ncis? Because the science is implausible and sometimes dead wrong.  I turned it off after ten minutes. I couldn't get past the forensics expert confusing terminal velocity with the acceleration due to gravity.

Game of Thrones
Seinfeld
Rome
Scrubs (minus the last couple seasons)

Some honorable mentions (these shows aren't "great" but are entertaining)
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Curb your Enthusiasm
Nip/Tuck (like a train wreck, don't want to watch, but can't look away)
Californication (seasons 1-4)
The League
House of Cards
Spartacus (a guilty pleasure)
Freaks and Geeks (too short lived)
Spongebob (first few seasons hard to beat)

damn I watch too much TV apparently

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
