Show me your beautiful places

I want to see the beautiful places around where you live. I'll start off with this nice view from Vesper Peak in the Cascades.

The options in my current state are a little more limited than my home state, but this is Tallulah Gorge, which is especially beautiful in the fall. Dh and I got engaged there almost 4 years ago.

Photo 1 is where I work: Nahanni Falls, Northwest Territories

Photo 2 is where I live: Calgary and the Rockies in the background

Photo 3 is where I play and will retire: Gabriola Island, off the coast of Vancouver Island.

Those are some beautiful mountains. I'm loving this thread. Below is Alderman Ford - a nature preserve where DH and I got married and Anna Maria Island, a beach about 40 minutes away.

I am originally from the south and this makes me miss the fall colors and waterfalls of the smokies.

This is a really nice little place about half an hour's drive from our house.   The river that feeds this waterfall has a ton of fossils along the beds, and you are allowed to take a few home with you if you choose.   It's a great place to take kids for a picnic and fossil hunt.

Cool! I used to live in Rabun County, a scant 10 miles from the gorge. One of my first dates with my wife was a hike in the gorge. I love that place, definitely one of the most beautiful in Georgia!

First photo looks like a nice place for a canoe trip, are there aligators there?

Twenty years in the mountains (climbing 14ers in CO, tramping the Kepler track in New Zealand, wandering trails in Switzerland, a trek to Everest base camp and around the Annapurna circuit in Nepal, climbing Kilimanjaro, and a week exploring the empty Brooks Range last summer) started with an attempt to follow a creek up a hill and finding this lake...

Looks like a nice way to get started. For me it was a wonderful teacher in high school that was willing to take a bunch of good for nothing punks out to show them the outdoors, changed my life.

Just where we're living now? I've got some nice ones in Alaska. Best pictures semi-locally would probably be the Great Ocean Road, except we lost the camera at the very end of the trip :(

This was yesterday. That's DW in the kayak...I sent her ahead so that I could get a picture of her with the lighthouse in the shot. About 10 minutes later, a bald eagle plucked a salmon out of the water not 50 feet from us. This is a tough life. ;)

Wow you're way off the beaten path (I use to live in Anchorage and Cordova long ago). Love the pics and the website!

Thanks Spartana! I've always imagined Cordova is beautiful on a sunny day but the weather has never cooperated with my visits.

Do they show up now?

Some actual climbing photos, we climbed peak across from dragontail:

my wife coming up an exposed section of the climb, noticed the waterfall below on trail to assguard, weird optical illusion makes it look like a river valley.

here I am blending in with the surroundings

Excellent! Were you on Witches Tower? There were so many nice looking cracks around the pass I didn't entirely know what to do with myself... Prusik also looked pretty good.

We were on Acid Baby, Enchantment Peak. I really want to climb prusik but the long hike to get there and the fact you need a permit to stay overnight has dissuaded me thus far. Saturday we left TH at 5am and returned sunday morning at 4am, long day!

It's like a whole different state than the Lower Peninsula. Beautiful everywhere you go, and very underpopulated. I highly suggest Lake of the Clouds in the Keewenaw Peninsula! Pictured Rocks and Tehquaminan Falls are also pretty great, and have lots of hiking trails.

Here's the botanical gardens in Chicago:

Is this the place north of Chicago? Close to Winetka...

We were there once several years ago in the late summer - very cool place. I don't think we made it through the whole place in the few hours that we were there.

Yeah, those gardens are about 15 minutes north of downtown Chicago. One of the largest in the US; it's a great place to visit if you come to the city for any reason.

Bright Angel trail Grand Canyon AZ. I went to the river and back up in one day. (16 miles). That means 8 miles was strait up in the hotter part of the day about 85 degrees F. It was an awesome journey. I was hallucinating at the end because my electrolytes were off. I drank 4 camelbacks but had no food. Bad idea. I even saw someone else rescued by helo. For a short time I thought I might need that myself. And of course I went swimming. It was hot and the water was ice cold. Thanks Colorado!

Yes! We went up through Taylor Meadows and then down to the lake. Next year, I'm hoping to do the Black Tusk / Panorama Ridge overnight hikes using Garibaldi as a base camp.

Ah yes, that is a good trip, we did it earlier this year. I only went to the notch at the black tusk as I did not want to go up the loose rocks, but it sure would be a great view!

The landscape around the tusk is eerie.

I grew up in Southwestern MI. We spent a lot of time up at Pictured Rocks. It's really beautiful up there and I miss it, although I love the PNW too. One of my favorite memories is an early morning swim in Lake Superior -- SO COLD but so refreshing, and the water was perfectly still and clear. I've never felt more zen.

The PNW seems to be a common denominator here... here are a couple contributions! The panorama is from our campground in Olympic National Park, and the second is obviously Mt. Rainier. It was our first visit there even though we've been here for awhile, and absolutely breathtaking.

The PNW rocks. Both of these places are under 3 hours away from our apartment.
