I am Border42
Lol, some dumb bass was convinced that b42 and I were the same person. Haha, we're not even the same gender. I'd jump on this pile, but I am smart enough to know that b42 was way smarter than I am.

As to returning under a new persona, I predict he is going to live a full and happy post-MMM Forum life. He doesn't need us. His contributions were mostly of the helping others variety anyway, even if he was strident on occasion <wink>. Speaking of strident, I propose that he was no more so than the kill the mortgage people. What's different was that he really was trying to help other people hasten their journey to FIRE, not just patting himself on the back. Not killing the mortgage is a much more nuanced concept. It's not such an easy soundbite and the true advantages of this approach are often apparent only from the vantage of hindsight. By then those super cheap mortgage rates will be a distant memory.

Thank you to everyone who has pledged to continue supporting the DPOYM thread. Everyone should understand the concept fully so they can make the most optimal decision for their situation. If the thread dies, where else will people learn this powerful lesson?

I wonder why he doesn't just create a new user, using a VPN if necessary.

He may at some point. But online reputation is a tricky thing and folks with four figure post counts often have distinctive writing styles and ticks. If I was banned and had to start over from scratch, while haivjng to be careful to not sound too much like myself I am not sure I would be motivated enough to try to overcome that.

I would be able to pick you out easily if you came back with a new username. You're the only person I know who spells "having" with a j.

With all the extra time he has freed up from trying to educate the heathens to keep their mortgages on-schedule, perhaps he can pick up a part-time gig as a closing attorney and reminding people who are buying properties not to pay them down too fast.

Okay, I lolled.

Sorry to hear about boarder42's perma-ban. He had interesting things an interesting thing to say *.

* I'm being facetious. Border had lots of interesting things to say, but one thing certainly dominated (and could get rather old).

We don't need trolls, even if sometimes they are amusing. I have not read every post that Boarder42 ever wrote, but when a moderator writes that someone got banned for multiple trolling violations, I believe it.

I basically agreed with a lot of his points, but he could be a little abrasive.

I will prepay 6 months of my mortgage at the end of this year in his honor.  It is a good idea to lock in that guaranteed rate of return in case something happens.

B42's detractors might feel they now have a better safe space...but its still a net loss to the forum.

I think I may just have to go shopping for a Big Ass Truck in his honor.

Well, this is a bummer.  I frequently got valuable information from B42 on the credit card points/miles thread and decided to prioritize investing over mortgage prepayment in consideration of B42's advice.  The trolling was probably crossing the line, but it's still a bummer.

You're right there were several people who decided my discussion had no merit and needed to be squelched. Despite a number of people who chimed in initially. B42 was by far the most belligerent and his constant badgering shut down any chance of a productive discussion.

Please feel free to stay out of any future threads I may start about stoozing.

A non "sequitir"? No. Not a non sequitur either. Rather a reference to a very funny B42 joke from one of your two closed threads on the topic that you mentioned attempting to resurrect.

This is his forum wake after all.

These forums have consistently been getting less face-punchy over the years I've been here, it's unsurprising he got banned as he didn't really change his posting style as a result.

The number of people willing to actually debate the math side of things has gone to close to zero here. Ah well. I guess there's a reason I browse these forums rarely now - there's just one more additional reason now.

I hadn't thought about it, but you're right. It's not just the old posters who are disappearing, but the ones who are willing to argue about the numbers behind FIRE and actually work through the math to back up their positions.

Go to the intentional/planned discomfort thread. Those guys are hard-core. I think MMM himself might visit there every so often and say (to himself), "Whoah, dudes, this is getting a little out of hand."

I've thought that boarder42 sounded a lot like these guys:

https://xkcd.com/386/   Duty Calls

https://xkcd.com/2051/    Bad Opinions

I was trying to figure out which boarder42 was trying to emulate,

Paraphrase as remembered (possibly deleted by mods)  Will I give up on educating people on the wrongness of mortgage payoff?  Never.

Alt1   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_shall_fight_on_the_beaches  Winston Churchill
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender,

Alt2  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0177789/quotes   Galaxy Quest
Commander Peter Quincy Taggart: Never give up. Never surrender.

I think that a lot of old timers on the forum forget that the question is new to new people and the old timers just remember the zillions of times we've explained it and expect new members to get semi-cryptic references and quotes from the forum past.
ie  --Top is IN, black or orange box, foam(y) etc.

The "Don't worry about the 4% rule" thread had a series of contentious postings where a new member clearly had not read the thread from beginning or failed to realize that the general cases presented also included the new members specific question.

I.... think that if the place to find seriousness on the MMM approach can be isolated to a single thread, my point is very well affirmed ;)
