Quiz trying to guess your education level.
« on: June 08, 2016, 09:30:12 PM »
I'm embarrassed I got 10 wrong.  It still gave me an 84%.  I question it's accuracy as a predictor of education level, but it might be fun.  Can you do better?

I got an 87%. It was heavy on the arts and language which is not necessarily up my alley, but it also had more Christian and American trivia than would likely be indicative of higher education worldwide. It seemed much more breadth than depth as well. Of course, I'm with the OP as far as frustration at missing certain questions.

Be prepared; it is/was 70 questions.

I got an 87%.

Was it's assessment of your actual education accurate?

76% basically picking whatever my instincts picked as the first answer, which in hindsight wasn't that great since I should have read all the answers a few times :P

77%, PhD - lol! The history ones were problems - I'm not much of a dates and battles kind of person. I apparently know Shakespeare reasonably well, and art surprisingly well, which were both a bit of a shock as I have little interest in either.

High school education.

Well done.  Shakespeare was my blind spot.  Ironicly, I grew up attending Shakespeare in the Park, because it was nominally free & my parents were fans.  I guess not enough of it sunk in.

It correctly guessed that I have a Ph.D., though it didn't ask anything that isn't taught (though perhaps not remembered) in a four year college education.

And it makes me wonder what the scale is.  Those were all multiple choice questions with between 2 and 4 answers, so even a toddler blindly mashing the keyboard would be expected to get somewhere between 25 and 50 percent of them right.

I missed two related to Shakespeare (what, pray tell, is the obsession with Shakespeare?) one on the Bible (even less interesting fiction than Shakespeare), and one about about some artsy painting.

And no, I don't have a PhD.

I have an MBA, that is all.

But I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. :)

High school education.

I got a 69% and haven't even finished college yet. I think the quiz is trying to make me feel better while showing me ads for things I won't buy [but I suppose the average non-MMM type Internet surfer would]. I almost shared my results to FB until I realized that in doing so I would be contributing to the ad laden click bait that pervades that place.

This. General education from personal interest reading accounts for WAY more knowledge than actual schooling. To be fair: I spent most of my BA avoiding writing my essays in a quest to read through the library, so...

One wrong.

All of that stuff was learned in high school.  HS biology, HS English, HS Math, HS Social Studies.  And for many of the questions, 3 of the 4 choices were obviously incorrect, like the moons question (none of the wrong options even had moons).

No, I don't have a PhD as they guessed.  And none of my CS BS came up in the questions.

91%, another PhD (not).  Same comments, American content (Court case ending school segregation), a lot of Shakespeare (which I got) and Bible and high school grammar (which I was about 50:50 on).  All the literature questions were either high school or things I read on my own.

Some you just had to look at the illustration with the questions to get the correct answer (not saying, spoiler), and some were stupid - moons around which planet, and one planet listed is the sun - come on people.

Definitely breadth not depth - and nothing I saw at even a Master's level, let alone Ph.D.

89%; exactly zero of the questions had anything to do with my M.S. in geology.

Embarrasingly I hit 1945 for what year World War I ended because I was moving too fast. I have never heard of the book "A Passage to India".

Did not correctly guess my education level.

I got the Shakespeare questions right, but mostly because I watched this show as a kid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygrEVnrg3Ic

But also from watching alot of this show:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6-bmhoulCM

And of course, the simpsons.

So what I learned today is that you can binge watch cartoons and pass yourself off as a PhD in liberal arts.

Zing!

From the comments, it looks like it's going to be a waste of time to take the quiz. PhD studies (usually) dive deeply into one particular field. How can a quiz testing you on undergraduate liberal arts materials tell if you have a PhD in something? A PhD's expertise could be in quantum mechanics but not know specifics about Shakespeare because they had to take so many science classes instead of humanities.

It guessed I have a PhD.  I have a MA.  But I'd say 95% of these were questions that a high school graduate should know, so the test is kind of ridiculous.

Thanks for the break from work, though.

76% myself
I feel as though I bombed the test so I'm surprised. A vast majority of these questions were traditional liberal arts and only one question was relevant towards my BS or MS. Though I do not have a Ph.D. as it suggested, I do work in academia..

I think elf-reported levels of knowledge is a better judge: the more you know you know, the more you know you do not know.

77%, took it on the phone with my wife while she was talking about something else, there were definitely 1 or 2 questions I knew the right answer for that I just screwed up.  It said PhD, I've got an MBA which I assume it predicts you have if you get 0-10 questions right.

81%, PhD. I've actually got a bachelors. And my 20th/19th century knowledge is awful.

To be honest, I think the US Citizenship Test is harder than this one was (and I sure as heck couldn't pass it--sad as that is).

I'm rather disappointed that the answer options for "What is entomology the study of?" didn't include trees.

It would be interesting to go back and deliberately answer questions wrong, and see what "education level" they predict. I "predict" that it probably says PhD for almost everyone; they're trying to butter you up so you'll feel like clicking through some more ad-laden pages on another quiz, and/or share this quiz on Facebook. [ETA: 93%, FWIW]

A lot of it struck me as relative trivia, especially the Shakespeare stuff.  Yeah, I've read a bunch of it, been exposed to it, etc, but can I remember what was in Othello and what was in MacBeth?  Maybe maybe not.  Could I the day of my 9th grade English Lit exam?  Of course.

97% for a PhD--I actually have two masters. The two I missed were actually in my subject area, although WAAAY outside my specialization. They could have made it a lot trickier--for instance for the one with moons, list two planets with a lot of moons. A lot of times knowing a little bit about the general subject made it possible to guess the right answer.

And yes, most of this is stuff I knew in high school (granted, I was a geeky kid who loved trivia).

But I always enjoy a quiz, so thanks for the link!

98%, but there was nothing in there that I knew that I did not already know in high school.  A likely majority of it by eighth grade.

The one I missed -Romeo & Juliet- I didn't know in eighth grade, high school or at the doctoral level.  I just didn't know it.

I don't think the test has much validity except as an effective as a way to run a bunch of banner ads in front of people.  It excels at that.

I got PhD. Still haven't finished my Bachelor.

A lot of the answers I knew from what my husband studied in high school (he took the fancy classes. I didn't, but we studied together), what I have taught our kids while homeschooling, or just from generally being a voracious reader.

As most were noting this is just a longer version of any other garbage online quiz.

87%, definitely don't have a phd, and this isn't a phd level of information being quizzed.

It seems sort of like a socioeconomic background test.  Questions about science and big historical events seem relevant, but all the Shakespeare and antique history and foreign language just seems like a test of whether your parents went to college, haha.

No, it seems like a test of how good your high school was.  And it helps to be American.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
