In Nevada, I was told to "give an item to the man over there wearing the beanie"...

This is what I thought they were talking about, and of course no one was wearing this, so I was confused.

YES!  Those are beanies.  Toques are for winter, those are for? summer?

I pronounce it Stocking Cap, and I grew up in the Maritimes in the 70's. I didn't learn the work toque until much later in life, likely around the same time that poutine migrated out of Quebec, but long before the donair migrated out west.

I propose we revoke the citizenship of any Canadian who was pronouncing it incorrectly, especially Zamboni (if Zamboni is a Canadian).

Yeah, the little cap with the propeller on top is what I think of when I think of 'beanie'.

I'm from the Midwest and have spent enough time around Canadians to know its a "tuke."

But I thought I'd clear this up - a knitted hat is not a beanie. It is a stocking hat, a ski hat, or just a hat. Mostly just a hat. It's the main hat we wear, after all.

Yes, those are among the hats I envisioned when ARS said beanie! I also think about Relic on The Beachcombers, even though I can't actually remember what his summer hat looked like...

Since we are on pronunciations, for months I thought arebelspy was pronounced R-Bell'-spee. I didn't even see the rebel in him. I prefer his full screen name over his shortcut, because I see ARS and pronounce it "arse". I like his posts too much to think of him as a butt :)

Delightfully, ARS is fully supportive of us pronouncing him arse :)

I just did a Google image search for 'beanie'. It showed me nothing but stocking caps.

I've never known Google to be so wrong before.

A tall, cylindrical, white chef's hat is spelled "toque" and pronounced "toke".
So I thought the guy was some kind of cook.

Google shows a lot of toques under beanie, it is true. Google is so far not representing my culture; must add images to its database.

It does also show this hat, though, which to me defines beanie. I think of beanie as any little circle hat, so like those posted above, or this one, etc.

So much like what happens when I read books with names in it i don't know how to pronounce (J R Tolkien I'm looking at you), if i see names i don't know how to pronounce i just turn it into a different name of something more familiar to me. (Or it's that i'm lazy.)

So in my mind:

FrugalToque = Frugal Torque

arebelspy = Arbell spy

And that multicolored headgear in the second photo was worn by Beanie in "Beanie and Cecil", but it's a whole other kind of beanie. Propellerhead vs. knit cap.

Yeah, totally, to me a beanie growing up was this:

...(some comics in this series skipped)...

It took me about a decade to adjust to the idea that a beanie is a knitted cap, as Google Images shows. Now when I think beanie, I think of the knitted cap first, so it's fully sunk in.

I have been mentally adding an 'r' to make it "FrugalTorque" all this time.  But yes "Frugal-Small-Hat" makes a lot more sense than "Frugal-Moment-Arm-Cross-Force".

A beanie is a whirligig hat.  A toque (tuke, approximately) is a Canadian warm hat.  Before edge-of-Canada DBF told me that word, I just called such hats "hats" and only ever referred to them in the context of other warm apparel.  "Go put on your hat, coat, snow pants, mittens, and boots!"

Yes, those are among the hats I envisioned when ARS said beanie! I also think about Relic on The Beachcombers, even though I can't actually remember what his summer hat looked like...

For a long time, I was correctly reading it as A Rebel Spy, but I thought that he was just really in favor of the South during the American Civil War... O_O  Apparently it is a Star Wars movie reference!

Like "barbell" "spy" but without the "b"

which is again, same problem.  I didn't know how to pronounce it so i just made up something up that in my mind resembled a word i know.  It makes no sense.

Ah! Because you're British, yes? I pronounce duke "dook". Hmmm...But not "rhymes with took"...

Sometimes it takes me a moment to get the Aussie poems and puns on the forum, until I do it in their accent and then it makes perfect sense!

Makes more sense if it's spelled tuque.

Honestly, I'd never seen it spelled out before this.  I just knew how it sounded from watching SCTV years ago.

The differences in pronunciation by region is fascinating.  Watching Canadian TV, a few odd words jumped out and struck me as sounding weird: Mazda and pasta.  Mazda sounded like "maz-duh" (very nasal) instead of "maaahz-duh".  Pasta sounded similar - "passs-tuh" instead of "paah-stuh".  Otherwise, essentially the same as my area.  However, we've found going to college always brought out the comparisons of local pronunciation differences and local terminology among new friends from different areas.

dew-k

Note that the "k" in this is the sound the letter makes, a hard c sound, not "kay".

Dew + The first sound in cat.

Now change Dew to Two. That's a hat, apparently.

Definitely!  Hanging out with someone from a different region is fun. We just hung out with some Canadians for a week, and the first dozen times we commented on pronunciation differences, but there were eventually so much we stopped, and just gave each other knowing glances ("you caught that too, right?" glances) when they said something that sounded interesting! I'm presuming they did the same when they heard our same-as-theirs-but-said-differently words.  :)

Linguistics is quite interesting.

Duke should be dy-uke. Dew is more like jew than do.

In... neutral British English, that is. Somewhat neutral.

I mean, there are numerous American accents, hundreds? of British ones, and at least two Canadian (haha).

Montreal-raised Anglo here. In English I pronounce it "two-k" (rhymes with "duke"), but in French it's "tsook". The vowel is, uh, lax mid-high front rounded.

Vico A brand of chocolate milk.  The term is often used by residents of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan as a synonym for "chocolate milk".

Getting back to the original word, I always thought it had a bit of a visor.

Are you going to change the poll so that us Aussies can actually vote - I'm betting that we might even have the largest vote - especially if the Brits vote the same as us.

And do you realise that we've just celebrated the annual beanie festival in Alice Springs - see http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-26/alice-springs-beanie-festival-2017/8649768

Aussies can vote. Everyone can.

There are three options for demographic: "American," "Canadian," and "Other."

Australians would fall under "Other."

Brits also fall under "Other," so if this was the case, we'd already see it in the poll.  There are 27 "Other" votes of 347 as of the time of this post, or 7.8% of the respondents. There may have been some who didn't have their unique pronunciation represented, but there have been very few (like you) that posted so.

These options were chosen because the site majority is American, with Canadian being second, and those are the two accents being compared in this poll--I wanted to see how many pronounced it toe-k versus too-k.  :)

But there are no options for the way we pronounce it - so none of us can vote..

I think they mean you need more pronunciation options for everyone to vote.  You didn't include: tock, toe-kay, or tuke (for me, 'cause two-kay made no sense to me, it's clearly one syllable, not 2 as implied by the dash).

I also didn't include "walla-walla-bing-bang."  :)

The point of the poll was to see how Americans and Canadians pronounced "Toque."  I was curious if it was a split between those two.

I was especially interested in how the man, FrugalToque himself, pronounced it, and how the majority of MMM readers (Americans) pronounced it, since he's been featured on the main blog a number of times, and I was wondering how many of us was thinking he was getting high cheaply, when really he just had a cheap hat.

If Australians, or others, have a different pronunciation, cool. That means they're not pronouncing it right either, which is fine, but not what I was interested in; it was the split between Canadians (and FT) and Americans (the majority of MMM readers). Thus the poll options.  :)

Modifying any poll after it's started invalidates the results, but any of you interested in all the other potential pronunciations of Toque definitely feel free to start whatever poll(s) you'd like. I got the information I was curious about out of this one, and am satisfied. If you aren't, and are that curious, please do start one with whatever options you're curious about.  :)

Exactly how valid is a poll where a considerable number of participants don't vote, because your Venn diagram universe excluded multiple valid choices from consideration?  At least a "none of the above" option would catch all of us who haven't yet voted!

BTW, I'm one of those Americans you wanted to poll :P

I mean, there are numerous American accents, hundreds? of British ones, and at least two Canadian (haha).

I'd say there are four, maybe five Canadian accents (not including Indigenous).    Newfie, Maritimer, Quebecer, Ontario/Prairie and Mountain/Coast/North.     The first three for a "fer shure" and you could probably just lump the rest of us together.

Good question.

It depends on what question you're trying to answer/you're trying to capture.

In this case, I wanted to know how many Americans pronounced it correctly versus pronouncing it toke (compared to Canadians).

This poll captured that perfectly.

So 100% valid.

... apparently I have been mispronouncing FrugalToque's name for years.

As I had been mispronouncing yours for years!  I just never 'saw' your name.  The lack of spaces did me in.  :-/
