? About Smoking Prescription Marijuana
« on: October 19, 2018, 02:10:35 PM »
Virtually all adults know that smoking tobacco  is not healthful.

Wouldn't it be healthier for patients who are prescribed marijuana to take its alleviative ingredient  as a pill or liquid  rather than smoke it?

I ask this question for the reason that years ago I read that there are ~4000 compounds, many of them harmful,  that are produced by burning cigarettes.

Doesn't burning marijuana also produce all kinds of stuff that's harmful if inhaled?

Yes, it does, and that's why it's recommended not to smoke it, but use a vaporiser. I've also heard of people brewing tea from it.

Yup, inhaling smoke is definitely bad regardless. I suspect you hear less about it with marijuana because the total quantity of smoke inhaled by habitual users might be lower.

People talk about being "a pack a day" smokers, which would be 10-20 grams of tobacco per day. The folks I knew who smoked pot tended to talk about buying "an eighth" of marijuana (1/8th oz or 3.5 grams) I think that lasted them days or weeks. (Perhaps someone more exposed to pot culture can comment on usage rates?). If we say one week, that works out to 1/2 gram per day, so 20-40x less burning plant matter smoke inhaled per day.

3.5grams won't last weeks for a regular smoker, but days, yea it should.

Cannabis is also the pure plant, whereas cigarettes have crap added to them.

But in general, yes inhaling burning anything is not good for the lungs.  Many ways to imbibe marijuana.  Smoking still remains the easiest to dose properly though, since it's fairly immediate.  Vaping has the same benefit.  I never liked vaping, though, feels too.... removed from nature/the source, I guess.  Give me a joint any day, it's as raw and hands-on as it gets.  But I also smoke about 1/8oz (3.5grams) every 6 months, so I don't worry about the health impacts.

The other direction, cigarettes tend to have filters - pot doesn't.

But you're right, usage is typically a lot lower.  I've consumed a total of about two grams in my life and that was over the course of at least two months (almost a year ago).  Though that's infrequent enough to be hardly typical I'd imagine.

Good point on the filters in cigarettes but not in joints/pipes, that hadn't occurred to me.

And there is also the option of using tinctures and edibles in the form of gummy type products. Available in the legal cannabis store near me. For my occasional usage I prefer a vape pen or glass pipe.

Smoking marijuana almost certainly increases the risk of lung cancer, just as any amount of smoking tobacco increases one’s risk. (As little as 1-4 cigarettes a day increases lung cancer risk by 2-5x). Better to eat it or something.

My MIL eats a bit of cannabis chocolate every evening to help with her arthritis and MS and it's been a game changer for her.

NY medical requires vaporization of the oil.  They were concerned about pollutants so that is the reg.

Assuming that the medicinal compound is CBD oil - you can buy just that. In multiple forms. My cat gets treats 3 times a day with CBD baked in (and however it works, it does significantly improve her mobility). And apparently it's legal in all 50 states. Now, if there's another compound that is providing the benefit, that wouldn't be included.

CBD oil isn't what people are going for in the smoking of marijuana. The active ingredient is the THC. Since the THC is regulated, the CBD side is often THC free. We have legal MJ, so there is some mixing of CBD and THC in the oils options.

If you look at the CBD products, you "should" see the note about no THC or if there is THC. The ones around here that are sold outside the MJ stores mainly have "THC free" labels. Some even offer testing facility info, so people don't have to worry about failing a drug test.

There are a bunch of stories about the CBD oil and if it is a re-emergence as a new snake oil. I don't see it as that, but it is funny how CBD is now in everything!!

Interesting. THC I believe is toxic to cats, so I don't want it for them. And you're right about all the "woo" out there re CBD. I couldn't find any research, so was forced to comb the internet. I only looked into it because a vet suggested I research it. I saw a TON of crazy claims. I decided to give it a try because it didn't seem that it would hurt anything, and I was seeing pretty consistently that it helped with arthritis. I really didn't expect it to do anything. I was shocked when within 2 weeks my 19 year old cat who had been pretty much immobile (and I was seriously considering if I should have her euthanized soon) started moving around a lot more, playing, and resuming some long-standing behaviors that she'd had to abandon due to pain. So, there is something that it's doing. I'm guessing anti-inflammatory and maybe pain suppression. It would be good to have decent research to base decisions on though.

Doctors say that marijuana is useful, but not everyone understands that in small quantities and begin to abuse it.

Aye, the medicinal dose is lower than the recreational dose.  If you got high, you took too much.

Most patients I see with medical prescriptions are on oil or tinctures.
