Pet insurance- hear me out
« on: August 12, 2018, 01:17:18 PM »
So unfortunately I have a second pet diagnosed with lymphoma :(  Makes me wonder about the house I am living in.

Anyway, it is my dear 11 year old cat. I also have his sister, who is perfectly healthy and asymptomatic at this point.  I'm considering getting pet insurance for the healthy female cat, because I'd like to get her diagnostic testing to see if she is perhaps in the early stages of cancer, and perhaps I can do something to prolong her life.  I know no pet insurance covers pre-existing conditions, but my female cat is healthy and has no symptoms at all, so I'm hoping if she does develop cancer, it does not count as pre-existing.

It has cost over $3000 to get my male cat properly diagnosed, so I'm assuming that doing diagnostic testing for my female cat will be around $2000 (since we can cut out a few dead ends we tried with my other cat).  I have enough savings to cover this out of pocket, but was thinking that I might come out ahead with pet insurance for her, since I know we'll do diagnostic testing soon.  I'll do the testing insurance or not.   This little girl is my best friend and I won't deny her care.

So, I'm wondering if any of you have experience with specific companies getting them to reimburse you for care.  I was overwhelmed with the options of pet insurance online, and my worry is that I will spend unnecessary money on premiums if the company won't end up paying.  If you have successfully used pet insurance, please let me know which company you used.

I have pet insurance (I'm in Canada so probably different company), they cover 80% of the vet costs up to certain maximums depending on the issue (like a broken bone is 25K/year but general sickness/vet visits is 4.5K/year) with an annual deductible of $100 and a monthly premium of $25/mo. My dog hasn't been super healthy (allergies, keeps eating stuff, etc.) so it's been an amazing deal for us. We've had over 13K of pay outs. I would generally recommend pet insurance with the company I use. I haven't had any claims turned away.

As a veterinarian and a pet owner with 4 pets currently insured with them Trupanion is my recommendation.  I have a dog who required specialty surgery and is now undergoing chemotherapy and they have covered 90% of the cost after my deductible.  Another good one that my clients like is Healthy Paws.

This site breaks things down a bit so its not so overwhelming.  https://www.petinsurancereview.com/dog-insurance

Thanks for the review site!  I tried searching options myself online, and it was too much info at once!
