Past election candidates
« on: September 18, 2015, 05:08:10 PM »
Wondering if anyone recalls, was Obama or Bush 41 well known before they ran for POTUS? Bush 43 was at least known cuz of his dad. But doesn't it seem that the final winner was kind of a previous unknown? May be a dumb question.

Define 'well known'.

Bush 41 had been VP for 8 years under Reagan.

Bush 43 had been governor of Texas for years and years and had a lot of name recognition.

Obama was a relatively new senator, but had given an extremely high-profile speech at the Democratic National Convention, and for anyone watching politics, was clearly being groomed by the party.

Who else are you thinking of?

I guess I'm off the mark a bit. I don't follow politics much, so I can't recall having heard of any president until they were in the race.  Never knew Reagan was an actor until he ran. Oh well, ignorance is bliss.

I would say Carter and Clinton were 'relatively' unknown when they ran...little name recognition though they were governors; the prominence of the state you govern definitely makes a difference. Reagan was very well-known, though...actor/then long term governor of California/and he'd already run for president at least once before the cycle where he won.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
