Mustachians in the Civil War
« on: November 02, 2012, 02:20:35 PM »
I recently came across the diary of my Great, Great, Great, Grandpa who fought in the Civil War.  He kept detailed notes of the battles he fought in and the day to day business during the war.

Then I came across a few pages tracking his income and expenses and realized mustachians have been around a long time!

"Summary of Cash Account for the year ending 1864 Received 759 79/100 Dollars Paid 97 55/100"

and here he was tracking his travel expenses

"July 30th 1869
Account of my traveling expenses to Nebraska
30th Dinner .30
31st tavern Bill at Quincis .50
Handkerchief .25
House shopping .70"

This one is not finance related but I thought it was too cool not to share

"TUESDAY APRIL 18, 1865

Sad, Sad, news mingled in with the Surrender which is the assassination of Lincoln & Seward. Our Nation has Sustained a loss that is irreparable & it casts a deep gloom upon the hearts of the Soldiers. It Sounds in my ears nearly as bad as if it were the Death knell of our nation. Still in Camp on Capefear. Weather fair & warm"
