Mustachian small dog pooper scooper?
« on: February 20, 2016, 06:14:57 AM »
So I find that just scooping little poos with my plastic bag is   awkward --can't get a good hold-- and was thinking that  some kind of scooper would be helpful--but Good Lord, $15 or so for some fancy dog thing? There must be a better way. My dad used to clean up after our dogs using a shovel, but that seems like overkill for these two and three inch little poos that Bandit (a Yorkiepoo) produces. I was thinking about cutting a one-quart plastic milk jug into a scooper. I don't know--what do MMMers with little dogs use?

I use the kitty litter cleaners - yes they have slots, but they work fine for picking up after dogs.  Dollar store ones are fine.  My dog is a bit bigger (45 pounds) so this may not work as well for smaller dogs, but at $1 it is worth a try.

Oh, great idea. I'll try that before anything else. And cheap enough to replace if the plastic breaks.

We have 2 small dogs and we use a plastic dust pan with a handle and a small metal rake.  Similar to these items:

Dustpan
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002LZRRQC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Rake
http://www.amazon.com/Flexrake-3A-8-Inch-48-Inch-Aluminum/dp/B000DEN4JW/ref=sr_1_sc_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1455997635&sr=8-3-spell&keywords=shub+rake+garden

We keep them on the patio and clean up after the dogs as they go, when it starts to get full we empty it.  I don't like a yard full of poop.

Thanks for the suggestions. Agree that a yard full of dog poop is not happening.

For a while I just used TP and a tin w/ a lid (or a shit can, if you will).  Then would just dump it in the toilet.

I just use biodegradable dog poop bags.  There is nothing that will make scooping up your dog's poop less awkward.  Even my dog gives me a raised eyebrow and quizzical stare each time I do it.

Forgive me for answering your "Where can I find a good X?" with "But you don't need an X!" I hate those answers, but I'm hoping that maybe this one will be helpful anyway. Maybe?

I have a Chihuahua. Small poos. I just invert the bag over my hand so it's like a fingerless glove, reach down and grab the poo, pull the bag back over my hand, and tie it in a knot. Seems like carrying around a pooper scooper would be annoying when you're already holding the leash, maybe your house keys, etc. And then you have this dirty, gross thing that you have to hold on walks and find a place to store at home. (This is the same reason I find the Shenis initially intriguing, and then my reaction changes to, "Oh, but... ew.")

As for the awkwardness, I don't feel awkward about it at all. I feel like my bending over and picking it up is announcing to the neighborhood, "Look at me! I'm not an asshole who leaves shit in your yard!"

Yes, this. Bandit is out with me many times through the day, and the small roll of green biodegradable plastic bags fits easily in my pocket and makes for a quick clean up. I just toss the knotted bags on the back porch and dispose of them properly when pup is asleep or gated in the kitchen.

I want to post these options in my yard as for some reason people with little dogs think that because the poop is small, it doesnt need to be cleaned up. I will get them, and their little dog too.

Oh yes, for one-poop pickup just putting your hand in the inverted bag and picking up works fine.  Knot the bag, proudly carry it for the rest of the walk to show you are a responsible dog owner.  This works for any size dog.  If poops are huge, that means the dog food has a lot of indigestible material in it, and maybe you should consider changing brands.  Coyotes are fairly big and they do not have huge poops.

My dog does most of hers in the fenced yard, at times that don't work well for me to immediately pick up.  So every day I go out with my cat pooper-scooper and a larger bag and pick up.  Fun times, she gets to play frisbee and I get to play frisbee and have a clean yard.  Of course this time of year I only pick up when weather conditions are good (i.e. the poop is not invisible under snow or solidly frozen to snow).  Lots of spring pick-up coming.

In our yard or just nearby on the road,  I'll usually just bring the bag back to the porch and toss it there while we finish chasing leaves and smelling chipmunk holes. I have the kitty litter scooper and will use that on my own time  to pick up missed piles (like that were buried under snow) and put into a larger bag. Once pup can go into the park with me, there are special waste bins on the trails for dog poop...sponsored by Foxxy, Greycie, etc. etc.

I bought a small metal shovel and rake set for this and paid 20 bucks but I have had it for 5 years and still going strong. It is worth the $ and won't break and bending over is not good for my back issues. If a dog poos while I am walking it I carry a bag of course.

We use a plastic garden hand shovel. Tiny shovel cost a buck.

Ohhhh... in-yard poos didn't occur to me! I was thinking only of walks! For the ones in the yard, I use the same method but with a bigger bag -- usually one from the grocery store or Home Depot or whatever. But yes, I can see how a scooper might be more efficient in that case!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
