You sir, appear to have a Capital Idea.  I'll pick up aromatic bitters on next trip to liquor store!

Dump the Maker's, buy Buffalo Trace. About 1/2 price and tastes much better IMO!!

Try Benchmark bourbon. $20.99 for a 1.75L. Tastes insanely good, very little difference between Jack.

I think Makers Mark is a bit over-rated too.
One of my favorite bourbons is Basil Hayden.

No honey either, just on the rocks with some water.

If you can find Few bourbon, it's excellent. A micro-distillery in Evanston, IL that's distributing in the Midwest.

Also, add this to hot tea and make a hot-toddy. Two hot-toddies and a nap is the single best remedy for colds I've ever experienced.

Here's a funny story.  Some (rather removed) members of my family used to own Makers' Mark. (Full disclosure, my last name is Samuels.)  My mother was born in Bardstown, Kentucky; but she attended a private elementary school in Samuels, Kentucky.  It's a little town, primary employer was a bourbon distillery, if you hadn't already guessed.  She met my father when he was attending Spalding University.  The combination of where he was going to college, and his last name, gave my mother the early (and quite false) impression that my father came from money.

Today, Makers' Mark is a brand owned by Beam-Suntory corporation; but some years ago it was still a family owned corporation.  I attempted to contact the company, in order to "buy back in", because I wanted my children to each have a share of Makers' Mark.  They wouldn't give me the time of day.

Now, can anyone guess which part of the above story is false?

Or you could just drink a nice $7 Canadian Blend?   You wont need the honey, ice and lemon to cover up the taste that way.

Beam went public in 2011, you could've bought in easily then, until they were bought out a couple years later.  I worked there for about 6 months, what a shit show that place was, BUT you got lots of free booze and could drink at work.  Which was a big deal until it wasn't anymore.

Maker's Mark and Maker's 46.  Perfect right out of the bottle. (or from the bottle if no one is looking  as long as you extend your pinkie).

I've had lunch drinks with clients exactly 2 times in 12 years.  Coming back to the office afterwards pretty much ruins it.

No, I mean AT work, like feel free to grab a bottle off your shelf, mix a cocktail, and go back to your spreadsheets.  Mad Men style.

I fucking love Man Men for that very reason.  I'm old enough to remember when you could light up a smoke and drink a martini at work.  3 martini lunches were common and people didn't gave a shit about you coming back to work toasted drunk on occasion.  That is how you knew it was Friday.

I think many people on this site wouldn't be working so hard to retire if drinks were included in their benefit packages.

WARNING!! UNSUPPORTED OPINION AHEAD!

Makers is the Diet Pepsi of bourbon. Too sweet, too syrupy, no subtlty, and well marketed. I've always thought of it as a beginners bourbon.  Try Woodford Reserve. smooth, but doesn't bowl you over with cloying sweetness. I'm also loving Bulleit Rye right now. Not a bourbon, but yum...

I'm not a big fan of makers straight, but it's great in an old fashioned. But i don't really drink bourbon straight anyways, Jim Beam Devils Cut is great mixed with dr. pepper.

Agreed, I thought it was good when I first started, but don't really like it much now that I've got more experience.

I reach for:

-Buffalo Trace (favorite)
-Basil Hayden
-Templeton Rye (Not a true bourbon)
-Jim Beam Black (excellent for $20 for a liter)

Although lately I've gone away from bourbon and started drinking a lot more Tito's vodka, which is another excellent vodka for $20-25 for a liter.  Mix in some (real) lemonade, it's an awesome summertime drink.

I'll try some Benchmark next time I go to the store, thanks for the tip!

I find Evan Williams black label hard to beat for the price.

Warning: It might come in a plastic bottle. It's still good though, unlike plastic bottled Vodka.

Evan Williams makes a decent Manhattan.

Eagle Rare aint cheap, but not crazy either and is damned good.

Blantons is tough to beat for pricey bourbon.

And manhattan's should always be stirred not shaken!

Well, I didn't notice that, or I would have; just to have a stock cert with their names on it.

Canadian Club now has some of their rye in plastic, and the flavour hasn't changed.  Reassuring to know that if the bag (LCBO bags are paper) breaks on the way into the house, the bottle will bounce, not break.

Warning: It might come in a plastic bottle. It's still good though, unlike plastic bottled Vodka.

You Basil Hayden fans should try Angel's Envy.  Same price range, still super smooth, but actually has some taste to it.

Love Evan Williams black if you're adding a mixer (ginger ale for me).

If you like Maker's, try to find some Weller, either Weller 12 or Old Weller Antique for a nice treat.

The best thing I've had is Four Roses Single Barrel. (although being a single barrel, I'm sure it varies some, but I get mine from a barrel specially chosen by a super fancy liquor store and man is it amazing)

Old Weller Antique is becoming very difficult to find in many places. Even at the 50% price premium over two-three years ago, it's worth it. Elmer T Lee is impossible to find and it was one of my favorites. Old Granddad 114 is now my go-to for quality and cost. Fantastic stuff.
