My answer to the topic OP: both.
Two semingly opposing statements can be true at the same time.

Society is becoming increasingly disparate and fractured. The wealth gap - and many other gaps - are increasing, evidenced by those who have prospered the most under the Covid crisis vs those who have suffered the most.

The fundamental underlying causes of this can be debated. I have my own view, which is that the fabric of a society is a reflection of the quality of its monetary system. You get a system that is politicized and debased to the benefit of some and the detriment of others then it is eventually reflected in society.

When all is said and done I think that the wealthy will have benefitted immensely from the policies in response to the crisis (inflated asset prices, zero financing costs), while those who have traditionally struggled and been hardest hit by the lockdowns will be increasingly trapped in a state of complete dependency.

“It was the best of interminable run-on sentences, it was the worst of interminable run-on sentences, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the coviddy winter of despair.”
