Licorice candy from Curb Your Enthusiasm
« on: March 17, 2020, 02:44:45 PM »
This is easily the dumbest question I've ever asked on the internet, but...

In the most recent episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David was obsessed with these thick licorice sticks they had at a car dealership, so much so that he ended up buying a car just to get access to them. Now, it also turned out that eating them gave everyone diarrhea but I still think they looked great. The packaging was obviously fake (they were called Süße Bär Lakritze and said to be Bavarian) but I'm hoping the product was real.

You can see the product in question in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyM3tNEm_Zg

(In the comments on that video someone says the licorice is Australian, but I haven't found anything that looks like that yet.) Any ideas?

They look a bit like Rjs Licorice Logs. They come in raspberry and licorice.

If it's Australian then it's probably Darrell Lea, I like their fruity liquorice sticks.

I think you might have found it. I had seen the chocolate filled versions of these, but hadn't noticed they had an unfilled version as well.

Thanks! those do look quite like it, except they only appear to be available as shorter pieces.

@gooki Thanks so much for the offer. I *think* I've got some ordered and arriving Saturday.

I hated licorice my whole life, but a couple trips to Finland in the last few years have taught me to appreciate it.

Update: I got the RJ's licorice and it is delicious. I'm reasonably certain this is what they used on Curb, though I have one lingering doubt--this stuff is fairly sticky and it didn't seem to be on the show. Perhaps they coated it with powdered sugar or something so the actors could handle it easier...

Not much of a licorice person myself.  But something about the way they were all chomping on them sticks in the episode made the licorice look and sound so delicious!

RJ's is pretty good stuff. I haven't noticed it being that sticky. Possibly either your place is warm or it might have been exposed to heat in transit?

It's not warm now, but possibly it got overheated in transit. It's not very sticky, but sticky enough that you wouldn't hold it in your bare hand to eat (instead, I peel the wrapper like a banana).

Yeah, maybe it was just my brain's way of distracting me from real life, but it just looked so good on the show.

Typically licorice is covered in a fine layer of oil or glycerin or something or other to stop it adhering to the pack and itself, as well as preventing drying. RJs is definitely stickier than a harder licorice, but I've only ever noticed stickiness in the mouth feel. I prefer those strap type licorices.

Easy on the licorice--it can raise blood pressure and cause other problems. Easily the best black licorice I've ever had is at Trader Joe's--it comes in a brownish bag. Very good and very tempting to eat too much!

Ha! I just sent this to a friend of mine whose husband normally eats a bag a day of the TJ's black licorice. She said he's only had one bag since they began sheltering in place and he's dying!

Cannot beat European licorice for anything bought anywhere else. Try ordering online from one of the many Dutch candy companies.I like the triple salts (oh my poor blood pressure...).
