Is recycling plastic worth the time/effort?

I've read that a very small percentage of plastic that is put in recycling bins in the US actually ends up getting recycled. Ever since China stopped accepting most recyclable material a few years ago, I read most of it ends up in the landfill because it is cheaper to just make new containers than it is to actually recycle it. Thoughts?
