Input needed about potential place to move to
« on: August 06, 2016, 06:27:46 AM »
I always have 2 sides in me that are fighting:
  • My rational brain is telling me that I should stay in Indianapolis where things are going pretty well.
  • My irrational brain is ready to quit everything and tells me to explore to see what is possible.

I am thinking about moving during the summer 2017 (at the end of the school year). My criteria are:
  • Be close to the mountains on the East coast
  • Live about 30mn from an airport that has direct flights to Paris.

The areas I am planning on exploring so far are:
  • Boston, MA
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Dulles, VA
  • Newark, NJ
  • Atlanta, GA

The areas I am not planning on exploring are:
  • Chicago, IL
  • New York, NY
  • Ontario, Canada

I am contemplating doing various road trips to those areas during the school year to explore a little bit. As a teacher, I get 5 days around Thanksgiving, 2 weeks around Christmas, 1 week in February and 1.5 in April.

I would like to hear from people that live or have lived in those areas and if they have recommendations. It would be good to live close to a wealthy area so I can continue tutoring French. But I can also get back to being a computer programmer for a few years (that would boost the date to FIRE).

I live in Somerville which is right next door to Boston (for all intents and purposes, it IS Boston). I would definitely recommend the area in terms of recreation, culture, food, city access, quick drive to beautiful NH, etc. There is a thriving tech industry and many wealthy suburbs nearby such as Newton where I'm sure French tutoring positions could be found. The only catch is the cost of living is skyrocketing. Rent is very high (think 2,000 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment) and family-size homes cost close to 1 million to purchase.
