Ingress the game
« on: November 18, 2014, 05:56:11 AM »
Has anyone tried this game?

https://www.ingress.com/

It's a game by Google that you play on your iphone or android phone.  It's GPS based and you wander around to different spots in real life where there are virtual portals that you can interact with, reinforcing your teams portals or attacking your enemies portals.  I tend to get bored of games pretty quickly, but this one's been rather addicting.  A friend of mine in Korea showed it to me this past weekend and I tried it there a bit, mostly just trying to figure it out.  The last two nights I've been staying in Singapore and I've been wandering about the riverfront passing by the people who I think are crazy ($10 beers, really?!?!) who probably think I'm crazy wandering around back and forth with my head stuck in my phone (or maybe not, every time I look up, I see at least 3 other people walking by me with their heads stuck in their phones... maybe they're playing the same game).

The game tells me I've walked 10km in the past 24 hours, so I guess at least I'm getting some exercise.

PS - I'm on the "Enlightened" team so you can join the same or opposing team depending on how helpful or annoying you find me to be in general.

Yeah, I picked up Ingress a few weeks ago. There's quite an active community of players in the Seattle area so stuff rarely stays the same color for long. I'm also Enlightened.

jordanread introduced me to this game when he was visiting Vegas, but I've not really played it yet.

RealLifeComics had a few good comics about it early this summer.

I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

I really like the concept of Ingress, but usually when I am out and about I am not focusing on my phone.  The only portal I battle over is basically reachable from the end of my driveway.  I have yet to find out who keeps stealing it from me.

Yea I've been playing this game for a while, about to hit lvl9 if I can get a couple more silver badges by then, but I'm starting to get burnt out on it.  It's good for getting out of the house on a slow weekend day when I might otherwise sit around and play video games or something.  It's a nice concept and the first augmented reality game I've played.  You kind of need to be somewhere populated for it to be much fun.  I told someone about it, but then looked at the map around them and there's nothing except the churches, no art really.  Here there's art all over so it's gotten me to notice things I otherwise wouldn't have.

For those with limited data, it doesn't use much.  I just switched to Ting from my companies plan, so not sure how much exactly yet, but might still be worth a try.

It will totally eat up your battery, though. It's a fun game as long as you remember that you are out in the world, so look up from the phone every once in a while. Enlightened forever!!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
